ivy does that around here. you'll have to pull it or smother it if you don't want to go the roundup way. if you do roundup, run a weed whacker over it lightly to scuff the leaves- the glossy coating keeps it from absorbing it otherwise. to smother it, lay down a couple layers of cardboard covered in mulch. overlap the seams. you'll probably have to go back and pull around the edges and do some maintenance for a few years, but that will get the bulk of it. we had a bunch and pulled/hardraked most of it out, then hit stragglers with round up. any that's going up trees will need to be cut at ground level and it will die and fall off or you can pull it off it it isn't up too high. it takes about 3 years for all of it to fall off big trees when it gets to the limbs. expect to pull seedlings out for quite a while,m too as the birds relish the seeds that set on the aerial stuff. weeds i'd just mow low for now, or weed whack or pull if it's in beds- most of the big weeds have a central area where the roots are and you may be able to weed out faster than you think, since a foot of growth may just have 1 rootball. gather up the mess and throw it a way or hot compost it. don't cold compost or you'll just be spreading weed seeds when you use the finished mulch. what you see now are winter weeds and will die out as soon as we get hot temps- not very long from now, believe it or not. then, next fall when they germinate stay on top of them or better yet mulch well ahead of time to keep the seeds from germinating & break the cycle. same with summer weeds, which will be germinating soon. you want to get to the weeds before the set seed, which is likely to be too late now, though you can limit the amount shed if you get rid of them. vinegar and propane torches work, but it's a whole lotta work at this point. and i wouldn't use a torch on anything but sidewalks and gravel with as dry as this year's been so far. the bonus- each year you stay on top of it you'll notice fewer weeds. it's harder with lawns since you can't mulch them. since i don't really care what grows in my lawn if it's green, you maybe should ask someone else for that side. :) the only thing i know is to mow low, and a good organic pre-emergent is corn meal gluten.

Please be aware that rats and mice develop tumors much more easily than dogs or people. I read this on the AOL vet board. Furthermore, the tumors they are correlating with the microchips formed right around the microchip, and they are not seeing this in pets. My dog did die of a brain tumor, but since she was a wandering breed, I feel it was prudent to microchip her. And her tumor was very deep and not close to the chip. I am fairly confident the 2 were not related, though certainly I can't be sure. Then again, every time she escaped, it was the tag on her collar that was used to find me.

But I did rake up the leaves on her property next to mine where we share a mutual irrigation ditch plus all the wonderful rotting maple leaves in the ditch. I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. Also, the next door neighbor that I took some newspaper from her bin comes over to where I'm adding to the compost bin and I'm in my pj's, coat and NEW BLUE RUBBER BOOTS and asks, "What do I have there?" I told her what I was up to and told her I was raking up the leaves in the ditch, clearing up the grass, etc. She said I could have all the leaves I want and I asked about the newspaper and she said she'll just leave the bin by my compost bin. Cool, huh? ;-) Also, when hubby comes home from Nevada after cleaning casinos and brings me two packets of coffee that will make 4 cups. LOL Not quite the garbage bag full of Starbuck's coffee grounds, but I'm sure it will make a nice tea! I still don't have him "dumpster diving" at the restaurants he takes care of for greens or coffee grounds etc. He says it is very messy! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!) there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. I just a couple of weeks ago ordered some irrigation supplies from them and received them quite quickly. About 4 days if I remember correctly. I also have the Melnor timer, and it does seem a bit confusing about its ability to do a mist cycle, but what you're doing is programing it to do one cycle (on in the am; off in the pm) and punching in a choice of watering pattern, in this case the off for 10" on for 2" pattern. I believe the idea behind the pattern was/is actually to help prevent water run-off when doing overhead watering by allowing the water to soak in between the on phases. I bought this particular timer though because when I looked at it my mind said "Ah! Mist!" (heh), even though the reason I bought it at the time was to keep a new patch of zoysia sod watered until it rooted in. My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. I went out and bought all the supplies today. Total cost was about $15 (my husband had PVC and elbows left over from installing the sprinkler system). I would like to go to an intermittent system eventually, but for now I am going with continuous. The water bill is not an issue because we have an irrigation system (there is an annual fee but it is not based on usage). And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!
