I had a NOID Brug that I had gotten for my birthday, some 6 or so years ago. Gave a small cutting (fortunately) to my neighbor, Ray. In 2004, the double punch of hurricanes Francis and Jeanne (3 weeks apart, to the day!), destroyed the plant. About a year-and-a-half later, when I saw how well Ray's plant was doing, I asked him for a cutting. He did a bunch... one for me... one for another neighbor... and several more for himself.

Ray loved the photos when I showed them to him, but was disappointed that I took them when the plants were low on blooms!

Wish I had taken some better photos of mine, which is a cutting of the plant that was a cutting of mine! The plant is about 5' tall and close to that wide. This after several trimmings during this growing season. It has some buds again (4th time this year), so I will get more photos soon.

Do most of you let your plants bush out, or do you trim them to tree form?

very very beautiful blossom and plants.
My first season. When I got my burgs, I let some go to bushes and they look awesome. Some came and they looked like they would make a great tree so I snipped off all other growth since then. One that looks really great as a tree is the Rosenquarz. Having buds now.
The other one is a Flamenco that I let grow into a bush and after moving it to a shady place after the first flush and the blossoms not lasting a day. It looks great also. So I like them both. I guess for me it also depends on where I want to have them permanently next year.

This thread got a second wind. This summer We put up our first fence after living in the house for 18 years. It is lattice and about 16 feet long and affords us some privacy on the patio. I'm still surprised to see it when I drive home. And I still find it has somewhat unfriendly feeeling, even though I chose to put it in! Without fully thinking it through at the time, the fence is part of a larger plan to make the patio usable. It is very very hot out there and inhospitable to lounging. The glassand iron table, iron cushioned chairs and large umbrella just don't meet my criteria for relaxing. Eating a meal, but not reading a book with a drink in my hand I would like to redesign the space and plant a tree for shade then I really could lounge out there...and appreciate my privacy For those who read the earlier posts, the horses across the street still get out. Last week I drove by neighbors (unfenced) yard and there was "Bella" (I think of her as Big Fella Bella) chomping on the lawn. When I couldn't find the owner's telephone number, I went back up the street, took her bridle and led her home. It was daytime and I was afraid if I told her to go home, she'd dawdle in the street and cause a car accident. Not bad for someone who 's only ridden horse at one birthday party back in the dark ages. People's answers were very interestingl. Here only one neighbor has a 'real fence. It is fancy iron and part of a plan for keeping up appearances (and surpassing the Joneses) It is the biggest butt ugly house and totally inappropriate to the neighborhood's age, history and style. Everyone who comes to the neighborhood for the first time asks about it, rolling their eyes. Yes, it needed a fence: an eight foot solid one to spare the neighbor from seeing this ostentatious eyesore. Next, finally getting around to screening our neigbor's white aluminium shed which is on an elevation, and right on the property line (totally illegal now) But he's such an old sweetheart I don't want to appear unneighborly. Does sharing plants count as a good deed? Three years ago I bought seeds for an ornamental Siberian apple (malus baccata) variety called 'white streak'. It's on Gardens North website. The instructions warned that the variegation in the leaves might not show up until the second year or not at all in some of the seedlings. Well just my luck, not one of the seedlings had any variegation, and we are talking 3 years later. I debated on throwing them out, but I feel bad just throwing any plant away so I brought them to work, put a "free to a good home" sign on them and even a short paragraph on how to care for them. I hoped someone would take them. They may not be variegated but they will still make nice ornamental apple trees. Would you believe the 5 tiny trees were snapped up within 10 minutes. That and an extra catalpa I had sitting around. It wasn't a 'big' deed, but it felt good sharing the plants and I joked that my trees were being adopted to good homes. Plus, it really made me feel good when one lady at work said she planted them the first thing when she got home that night, it told me she appreciated getting the trees. Glen

There was another time I wanted to "chat" with you...when you had so much yellow in your garden....or to ask about lady bugs. :0) Note: My Dh says he's going to let me buy one of these old homes and "show me" how much work they really are. Game on!!!!!! I'd love to get my hands on one! After a total face lift....and such....ha ha....that little farmhouse I posted, would sell for $350K easy! Just up the street, 3 blocks , the bigger ones are a million+......I'm just doing little projects now.....I need to buy something or die of boredom. lol

I am happy with the neighbors I have - they are not best friends (like some neighbors I have had). I'm in the city limits of Los Angeles, but the neighborhood has a somewhat suburban feel to it, and the street has almost no traffic. When I lived in Venice (just before moving to where I am now), I had very friendly neighbors on one side, but they were very young and had parties almost every week-end (we were invited), but this did not bother me. Venice has mostly renters but Westchester (where I live now) is mostly owner occupied and there are almost no rental houses on my street now. When I rented in Culver City, my next door neighbors became my best friends, but then we moved away from each other and don't see each other as often as we used to.

Give and Ye shall receive!

Many of the plants in my yard started as cuttings or pups from Ray's yard. And as I have learned, and my gardens have grown, I have been able to return the favor. Its a good system.

Aloha, fool4flowers. Why aren't you and your husband living on Kauai??? Best I can do is the Marriott Vacation Club (where I am an owner), on Kalapaki Beach... my uke, that I can't play, but will always love, from Scotty's in Kalaheo... and listening to Brudda Iz until I can get back to paradise again. Work hasn't gotten me there, since the PGA moved the Grand Slam to Bermuda... oh well.

Hubby retired here from the military, lol. I wish we could go home to visit John's family more often. Hubby loves his Uke too but getting out of practice, lol. Welcome to the forum. Post more pics of your garden if you like. We love pics, lol.

Oh, wow Bob. Your yard is beautiful. I wish I could put my plumerias in the ground. They are getting huge and one is taller than the roof so I am going to have to cut it back this year to get it in the house, lol. I love that pink and yellow mixed one you have. How deep do you plant your crinum lillies? I have 2 that haven't grown an inch all summer. I am wondering if I have them too shallow.

Thank you, all, for all the nice comments. Not being able to live in Hawaii, I work hard to emulate the beautiful gardens that I've seen there. I'm never quite satisfied. I can not imagine living anywhere that I could not have lush tropical gardens. It is very important to me.

I love having some of my plants in pots, even when they get really large. The only time I have to bring them indoors, is when the hurricanes threaten. I have a group of three Adanidia Palms, in a 45 gallon (?) pot. They are about 15 feet tall, and look great next to the pool. At hurricane time, I drag it accross the patio, and lash it to my pergola! Of course, though, it is very nice to have things planted and let them do their thing... Few freeze worries down here!

All of the crinums are started from pups, the first of which came from Ray. I plant the pups at the same depths they came out at... Just a few inches to the bottom. It takes a few years before they bloom. Once they start, though, I get blooms year round. The heads are so huge that the plants can't support them. I have to stake them up with bamboo stakes.

I am on a plane, about to take off for New York. Enjoy the holiday.

oh Daniella it does the body good to have a giggle thanks to your humor when at a time like Gustav there is not much laughing going on. Just praying.
Bob said he is on the way to NY daniella....is a great time now for a move. But do you really wanna give up all your ponds and by the way....everybody dries to create, what their heart and soul desires. For bob it is to get a little of home away from home. Which I have never been to hawaii but in my eyes it can not get anymore tropical and beautiful then that!
All I want is a little paradise I can call my own.

I love all your photos. Gorgeous criniums and plumies. I only have one plumie blooming now the rest have quit.

My neighbor has a pink noid brug tree about 14 ft tall and about that as wide as the one in the photo too. She said it has only been there a few yrs. I am realizing that I probably planted mine all too close together being that they are already turning into huge monsters. Some went from cutting size to 9 ft in 4 mos. No way can all mine get big as hers, I will need 20 acres lol!
