Finally got rid of the ugly old shed, yay! lots of photos

My bf finally built a new shed (that doubles as a work shop) and tore down the old one, and he and his friend got the ugly roof extension torn off as well. Things are looking better!

We are so happy we bought a BBQ to celebrate and had our first little backyard party. I'm feeling very good about finally making some progress, phase one is complete and now we just have to save up money to tackle phase two. If you're wondering why the trim was not cut flush to the one side of the shed it's because we plan to build a trellis along the two sides with doors and my bf thought it would help to have that piece intact when they did it.

Linda, What a great piece. Only lacks a 'chamber pot' and it becomes a guest house. LOL I can see so much happening on the outside. Maybe one of those succulent wreaths on the door with tiny terra cotta pots all around it. Draping plants spilling over the top roof edge. Mini window boxes on each side of the door (or sides of the shed). Small window/mirrors above the window boxes. The planter boxes can hold extra hand tools also. You are blessed and well loved. Have fun with that Adult sized doll house. We girls never quit making mudd pies. We just call it gardening now. Ha. (That would make a great sign.) Susie

Hi scottspond, some how didn't think she would, Florida vs Manchester, no contest really ;-) The area I live in is New Mills, in High Peak in Derbyhsire. If it doesn't ring a bell, it's just past Lyme park, Buxton is about 2 miles away, Stockport 9 miles and Manchester 20 miles (all via road) Handily the railway station is about 5 mins away from my home, so trips to Manchester are pleasent through the countyside and don't require I use the car ;-) And in summer I get to hop on the odd steam trian, every boys dream. My Mancunian mates reckon I've gone "all posh" living here, as I was born and grew up in Fallowfield and went to school in Rusholme. Regards ChrisC.

andrelaplume, I hope you can get some pictures posted of your shed and the lay of the land. Your "light bulb" about a side door isn't too far fetched and not too late either. I heard that the statute limiting sheds to doors on one side only was repealed. If you have adequate wall height on the sides for driving the tractor in without giving yourself a free hair cut (or lobotomy) a doorway for the tractor might be reasonable. If you decided to add a door on the side, you could design the "doors" as "2 half doors with a vertical overlap where the 2 halves meet in the middle (to hide the center seam), hinge the doors at the bottom so that when the "doors" are let down they become a short entry ramp. The "doors" could be equipped with latches/hasps/bolts that are entirely on the inside of the shed and it wouldn't even be obvious that there was an opening from outside the shed. Attach a short length of light duty rope to the upper inside surface of each "door" so you can pull the "doors" closed or let them down from inside the shed. This trick would allow you to keep your current ramp (if you wish) for all the other traffic, and would keep from having 2 readily visible ramps in place. (Just another idea that started ricocheting around inside my skull) Of course, this idea would be easiest to accomplish IF your shed is covered with the popular "T-111" 4' X 8' wood panels. Vinyl siding would be more problematic to accomplish a "hidden" door, but there are still ways that could be handled.

Got rid of the mildew on my Trex deck

I have had my trex about 7-10 years I am guessing. I was so excited, maint. free and all. Boy was I wrong. Still looks nicer than any wood deck but need to clean mold/mildew twice yearly is a pain and I have a very large deck. Today for the first time I used a power washer on low pressure with the cleaner that came with it "G Clean", didn't do much as far as I'm concerned, for mold mildew etc, NOT. Its cleaner but all mildew/mold spores are still there so i thought I am going to try a test area with vinegar/baking soda and see what that does, pretty much nothing again. I can deal with the way it looks as the spotting doesn't show when dry so thats good but I am looking into prevention more than anything now. Any luck out there? I want to stay as organic as possible and may just do vinegar and baking soda and see how it goes. Not feeding the mold/mildew is probably better than anything. I live in MN which can be very wet at times and my deck is East facing primarily with some South sun as it passes on by to set in the West. The difference from the inside of the house is amazing. Your kitchen must be flooded with light now. I love it. What a wonderful change.

The new shed is great too- you can't even see it. Is it way up against the fence instead of out in the middle of the yard? I love the colors (similar to my house :)). You two have really undertaken a lot of work and finished it all in short order. This is an inspiration- I must finish grouting my shower now!

The view from inside the house is so much better now, before you had to bend down to see anything but the ground outside and now the whole room is filled with light and we can actually see our wonderful trees.

The long term plan is to create privacy using plantings and a few judiciously placed trellises, then deal with the standing water issues by making a long, U-shaped dry creek just inside the privacy screen (also giving me a reason to bring in lots of rock.) I would like the center to be a 'meadow-lawn' planted with native grasses and wildflowers. And of course a nice, big patio and pergola close to the house. Then our yard will be like private little park for us to enjoy with the doggy, I can't wait :o)

Forgot to say that the shed is just 5' from the fence, not only is it out of the way it serves as a partial privacy screen and blocks the view of our neighbor's giant blue shed. We are very happy with the color, I went through more than 20 different paint samples trying to choose, in a way it was the hardest part of the whole project ;o)

You did good on the paint color- the shed blends in perfectly with the foliage and gives it a real woodsy feeling. It's really difficult to choose good paint colors for me. I ended up buying a whole set of acrylic paints which I mix and put up on the walls, then I go find a paint chip to match and order the paint. I've wasted so much money buying truly ugly paint!

I also built a dry creek bed for drainage and it works beautifully. The water used to come in under the front door and flood the living room; now it sweeps around at the front of the property and down my neighbor's gravel driveway, where it percolates into the soil and waters his big sycamores. I'm looking forward to seeing your creek bed. I recommend looking at Wanda's front yard to get good ideas. She built a spectacular dry stream bed. I used stones that are too small for mine, and it looks a little rinky-dink.
