Where have all the good t.v. gardeneing shows gone?

Where are t.v. southern gardening shows?

Many folks new to gardening formerly relied upon advice from gardening shows. HGTV carries a show 1-2 times a month. A.P.T. in Birmingham carries "The Victory Garden", run for 31 years out of Mass. Would it be rational for a southerner to follow advice from a Zone 4/5 Massachusetts gardener?

Good southern gardening shows should include ornamental as well as vegetable and fruits, and propagation too.

They have a "victory garden" at Calloway Gardens in Georgia, too. I've been there. I remember seeing some VG episodes that had footage filmed there. I like the show Gardening by the Yard, too. Even though it's filmed in Oklahoma, many of the same plants are hardy here and there. P. Allen Smith does good segments, too. I'm not sure where he hails from. Maybe you could check out websites for those shows.

The UNC-TV has five stations if you have a digital TV. There are at least five garden shows on one of these chanels and I find one at least every day. Volunteer gardener is out of TN, P. Allen Smith as previously mentioned, the NC cooperative extension does one, can't remember the name of it now. Victory Garden and another one from the American Horticultural Society. Theresa.

Here's something I'm learning about using coffee grounds -- a thin sprinkle disappears into the ground relatively quickly, an inch or two may form a crust at the surface when it's hot and dry, but more than two inches and the crust cracks and lets water and air through quickly. Have you ever seen the video of the new "water-absorbing" concrete pavement? That's what it looks like when I water with the hose over a thick layer of cracked-crust coffee grounds in Summer -- water goes straight down without even puddling. Whenever I read online articles or studies about using coffee grounds in the garden, they go as far as saying "apply thinly" because they must have observed the crust forming at the 1-2" mark. But I think it's odd that others didn't think to see what happens when they then add even more. Periodically, I dig back the layer of grounds I put down to see what's going on beneath the surface. It's teeming with life -- earthworms, especially, but also mycorrhizae. At this time of year, squirrels are also digging in it to bury their Winter caches. Of course, YMMV, but putting it down thickly is working for me here. :-) ~Christopher

There's "Gardening by the Yard" with Paul James on HGTV, which is produced in Oklahoma (I think). Anyway, it's entertaining, if a little silly. There are also several gardening podcasts (you don't need an ipod to hear them - they can be streamed onto the computer). My favorite for the South is "The Gestalt Gardener" with Felder Rushing and "Dr. Dirt" - not a lot of hard info, but very entertaining. It's produced in Mississippi. Victory Garden seems to have abandoned their regional emphasis in the last couple of years and "dumbed things down" considerably, but this is a common trait among garden shows. Most of the call-in shows spend lots of time retreading questions about poinsettias, amaryllis, and brown patches in lawns.

I agree that there's a general dearth of good gardening media - it appears that there's a lot more in the UK, but that's not available (or applicable, in most cases) to us.

"Listen Again" pulls in radio programs on your computer speakers. Two programs for gardeners are very entertaining and pack full of information relative to UK gardens. The 2 farming shows address a lot of global issues and EU issues, especially mad cow disease and bird flu.

I have found that not only is there a lack of TV gardening programs, but also a big void finding public gardening information in my county (Henderson County.) Yes, I know the County Extension Services have the information, but why not run something timely in the local papers once a week? Isn't the idea to PROMOTE this knowledge to the public? I know there are a lot of new people in the area and they are chasing all over looking for information (myself included) I just did a search for the Arboretum in Asheville on the GW and came up with nothing!! What??? I have lived in many other states and have always been able to sign up for local county newsletters, but to my knowledge, I cannot do this here in North Carolina. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places? If anyone can find a newsletter (monthly, weekly, or seasonally) for Henderson County I would love to know about it. I know the knowledge is "out there", but I seem to be having a problem find out where "out there" is exactly. I have lived here for a year and am making very slow progress finding information that I need without driving all over the place to get it. Is there any kind of regular newsletter in a local paper or from a good source that I can learn from? If so - I sure would like to know about it. Thanks for any and all help that you may be able to offer to me. I would appreciate it very much.

Extension publishes a monthly newsletter, but it is for the entire state of NC, not any one region. It is called SUCCESSFUL GARDENER. Linda Blue is the Buncombe Co. agent, so you can call her office and find out how to subscribe. It is free if you go by the office, at least here in the Piedmont. Our Extension agent has TV and radio spots on a regular basis as well as having a weekly newspaper column. We did have a Q&A from local Master Gardeners, but the paper kept editing the info so much that sometimes it wasn't even correct. Now we have columns from NYTimes and other services, all of which are not appropriate for our zone 7 gardens. I, too, miss having gardening shows, especially in the winter when you cannot get outside as much.
