Out of control weeds

What is suggested to remove and keep away weeds as seen in the photo below?

Roundup should do it. Penny

RoundUp followed by a pre-emergant control product like Preen.

I can't see the weed very good, but if the one that is flat to the ground has yellow flowers it could be Puncture Vine. If it is there will be very loose, small seed capsules with VERY sharp thorns that you will need to make sure get cleaned up too.... not only because of spreading seed but because those thorns can poke right thru' the sole of a shoe... or paw.... or hoof.

Thanks, tony. Sorry I disappeared. Massive storms through here knocked us out of commission for a time. I will try and leave them be. The nest under the board, especially, should be no problem. As for the other theoretical nest, that I may or may not have disturbed, I will lay it by ear and look carefully to note any potential goings-on.

So..... I sprayed the weeds with the directed mixture and within 2 days, the foliage has turned black and the weeds appear to be dying. I tried spraying weeds ranging from little seedlings, to a cluster of Canada Thistle. Zappo! The biggest downside is the cost. $140 for the tub. Makes 25 gallons. Definitely a spot spray or broadcast in a small area.

At my first house, I had luck getting rid of it with boiling water, but it was over a period of a few years, and even then we still had to stay on top of it each spring. I was super vigilant about pouring hot water over all the leaves and then leaving the dead leaves on the plant. When new shoots came up I poured water on them as quick as I could. My layperson theory is that pulling the leaves/stems off just encourages the roots to send up new shoots, but leaving the dead ones on means the roots don't get nutrients and they eventually die. I have no idea if that's what really happened but it worked for me -- not a one time fix, though.

I have to join Nick on this question. I've pulled all the weeds in the area and put down enough mulch to supposedly keep the weed seeds from sprouting. It seems to be working because the weeds I'm getting now seem to be "grasses" sending out runners to spread to new areas. I'm about ready to spray the #$%^ things! I'm also dealing with either monkey/mondo grass or something that resembles it. It seems to have a bulb with roots, similar to green onions, but it also spreads by rhizomes...and if I don't get all three, it's more than happy to pop back up. I've figured out that the best method is to just dig it up and make sure to get the roots. Can anyone tell me what it is and if there's any hope? I have a friend that's silly enough to want more monkey grass, so I can pass that patch along...but there's more waiting in the wings.

It looks like you've mulched, but the deeper the mulch, the more difficult it is for weeds to survive. If the weeds are big, you can just pull them and keep at it on a weekly basis. Some people like to avoid using Roundup.

Round up tends to float on the air... it's not allowed near my plants... the ole BF fried one of his precious agapanthus (ick) plants, spraying it near his plant. :o) To me, it wasn't close enough to the agapanthus, but now, well, he doesn't use it much anymore! I go out and pull weeds, he whines if I am not more prompt about it.

Pull them ASAP and keep an eye out for little sprouts and pull those right away. If the weeds are the spreading mat types, then one pull of the root will pull out the whole thing... those are my favorites. You have to stay on top of it until they are gone.

This is not an example of out of control weeds... What you have can easily be handpulled, then apply a thicker mulch to cover any bare soil, and keep handpulling at least every two weeks until they stop coming back. It definitely pays to get the weeds out before they go to seed, which the flatest growing one in your pictures already has. It isn't puncture vine, by the way, but is a warm season growing weed that spreads like crazy if you don't keep after it.

I wouldn't recommend either Roundup or pre-emergents in your case, they both can drawbacks that your situation doesn't require such heavy hitters. Now if you had blackberries, wild morning glory or bermuda grass, I would advise you to get the Roundup!

Pulling is fine if you can get the weed root tip, otherwise you will have the plant regrow. I have an acre and roundup is my liquid weeder. You can use a pop bottle, cut the bottom off, put it over the plant and spray through it to keep it from moving around. I never use it on a windy day.
