Brug newbie question....First year stem cuttings

I'm sure I could have researched this and probably still will...but in the meantime thought I'd post a new question. I have 5 Brugs all in 20 gallon equivalent pots...Getting huge and quickly, had small bloom flush on 'Frosty Pink', maybe 10 - 12 blooms. 'Insignis Pink' one single bloom. All have the infamous "Y's"...

Now the question...the lower stems are all covered from soil line to the "Y's" with these little bitty leaves, they never get very big, the leaves above the "Y's" are huge - some over a foot in length. Can I sit outside and pick these tiny leaves off the plant? I'm thinking if yes - it should give the top stronger growth more umph, am I correct in thinking this way or am I way off base here - headed for the loony bin???

Thanks all in advance for suggestions and comments...I'll post pics later..(batteries in camera are dead as dead gets right now...LOL).

Yes you can def pull those itty bitty leaves off. Alot of people do to keep that tree form look.
If you leave them be, some of them will form more branches over the main leaf that is coming off the trunk. So, it starts out one itty bitty leaf..a couple more grow right over that, looking like they are basically coming out of the same spot..that is what may grow into a branch. I wait till the branch forms, and is a few inches long, then take off the main itty bitty leaf..which by the way isnt so itty bitty any more by that time..
Kepping your brugs trimmed like that and in tree form, def is a space saver, so you may want to take that into consideration.

Scott it is all what you want your angel to grow up to be. More bushy...then leave the leaves along the stem. More tree shaped or just the stems up to the Y and then the blooms can dangle more freely and show off better...take them off. I usually take them off. I think the same way...the energy can go UP :-)

I believe it is a matter of preference or space.

That a MAN takes out batteries from a TV remote...respect..you must love your plants lol

Jill has the prettiest smile that seems to come straight from the heart. What a pretty family you guys are!

Hi TIA! This is what I do... Set my cuttings in a 16oz glass and fill it up with 6" of water. I keep this out of direct light and on my kitchen counter, temps are not too much of a concern for me. I change the water every day replacing it to the same water line. After anywhere from 10 to 20 days when the roots are 1-2" long I pot them up in soil. I moisten the soil pretty good then I first plant them but then try not to keep it too wet, or the cuttings will rot. I keep these under a shop light or on my kitchen counter. I peek and check how the root system is developing, if the roots are looking good and growing the hard part is done (about 1-3 weeks later). I hope that helps! Happy Gardening Keriann~

I just pulled a pecan tree out of one of the potted brugs today, lol. If I had realized what it was I'd have been more careful. We could start a pecan farm, lol. The golden rain tree is cool. I got too baby hollies I dug out of the flower bed today. If the bad parts in the middle aren't hollow feeling I would leave them alone. If they are I would cut off the healthy ends and try to root them. I have some that got stem damage and some is healthy just brown and gnarly looking. I was so upset today I finally trimmed the hedges I got to take my frustration out on something, lol. I found a bunch of my moonvines are sprouting so if you want some stop by and I can fish you some out. I already seperated about 6 of them out and planted them all over and still have quite a few in the pot germinating. I had just buried them all in the same pot one was growing in last winter and left them there not thinking they would all make it, lol. Things are not working out for my get together with my sister and the boys grandmother is dying of cancer so I think I am going to have to cancel my plans. I got some vines planted on the arches today and fertilized everything so at least I got something done. I have a bloom on my old faithful noid but it had mealy bugs on it so it will probably be deformed. That is the one that had all those dried shriveled little branches so you might want to check for them on yours. Its little cottony looking bugs that look sort of like flat rolly pollies.

Hey Barb!!! They are not sitting in water....I fill it up a little in the morning for them...but within an hour it's all evaporated.....it's in the 90's here right now...so I sometimes have to water twice a day outside.....and mist things off up to 4 times a day in my greenhouse. I am not sure of the name of the datura.....that's not very helpful is it? lol The brugs is a Axelrose? I'm for certain it doesn't look bad due to anyones fault other than my own. lol I think that cutting might be a goner..I went out and looked, I don't think it's going to make it. I have received hard stemmed cuttings in the fall from people and had much better success...perhaps I'll stick to those kinds of cuttings rather than the soft green cuttings. I'm not good enough with brugs to be able to make those grow. Thanks for the invite to the swap as well...I joined a big one, I'm afraid i'll get all kinds of mixed up if I join another one before that one is over...but, I appreciate the invite.

Here is what I do here in Sayville. My brugs are in 16 to 20 inch pots. In the spring I heel them into the ground (bury the pots about 1/2 way to prevent tipping/falling over). When frost threatens, usually late October, I cut them back, my 8 to 9 foot tall standards become 4 feet tall.........and into my basement they go. There is a bit of light from the basement windows, not much really. Basement is in the lower 60's temperature wise. I give them a half gallon of water once a month, this seems to be enough to keep them going, but, not to get them growing. There might be shoot or two here and there, and I usually get a bloom or two (boy, does the house smell good!). If the shoots get too wild, I just cut them off. Come April 1 I water every other day in the basement, this gets them awake and it is out the door and on the patio for the summer on May 1. Bloom for the 4th of July. Cuttings, I pot them up into 6 inch pots and grow them slowly on my window sill, I stick the cutting into the mix, water the heck out of it, then I keep them dry, minimal water (they will root and become semi-dormant, I really do not have room for them to grow much inside) and will pot them up in the spring. Potting mix is ProMixBX. Feed is Peters 20-20-20 supplemented with Epsom Salts and Milorganite. I feed the Peters weekly. My wood for cuttings, I am picky here, I use the semi hard wood, it is not completely green, not completely brown. Seems to root well, but not rot. Brugs root very easily. Just take it easy with them. I have rooted parts from just the tips to "instant standards" which is a long straight branch shoved into a pot. Just pinch the leaves off the branch which will allow it to root, takes about 3 weeks and you are off and growing. Think of them like little green people, I do. That 12 inch plant in a 6 inch pot will become a 5 foot tall blooming specimen in a 16 inch pot in about 3 months in my yard.

Well, and I thought that right there, where the itty bitty leaves come out, that's the spot where the roots come out if you make a cutting. Am I wrong here? And the little leaves usually come out right above the spot where a large leave has fallen off.

Haase you need to stick a cutting in a glass of water and watch the white nobbies form...you will then see that the roots are coming out EVERYWHERE lol

I believe after the large leave on that spot is gone...it is called a eye. don't kill me. It is just ME lol AND I just got up a little while ago ha ha ha But again, don't kill me, I think I read once that you let 5 eyes be, on the stem that is staying behind after you take a cutting from a stem. Reason being is that the cut part staying behind usually dries up quit a ways. So if you cut it to short to a adjourning stem...it will or could affect a good stem.

AM I MAKING ANY SENSE HERE? lol I hope so.

Scott I have a few plants that I want to just grow as a single stemmed brug so I will be doing air layering for the first time. If only it was not so darn hot out there! I would have been able to do it already.
