tobacco hornworm problem

Well had this happened at the beginning of the growing season there would have been no problem -- the caterpillar would have been duck food. (Since I live in a 3rd floor apt I only had room for one dwarf tomato plant on my balconey.) However, as the plant in question is a determinant type and is in the process of dying off anyway having done its duty, I have no problem letting the 'pillar do his thing. Now he is presently 3-4 inches long -- and I have no doubt will soon descend to pupate. So here are my Q's

Will it pupate and emerge yet this fall or will it overwinter and emerge in spring?

If this is going to be a case of spring emergence, does it have much chance of successfully overwintering in a pot?

(Keep in mind that I live in an apt -- there is no garage or other optional 'cool/chilly but protected' place.)
