I had occasion to be at WalMart today and asked a guy in their "Garden Section" (What a joke!) if they had any wildflower seeds. He replied that the growing season is OVER, so the seeds have been returned to the parent company in the midwest or somewhere. Hard to believe anybody still doesn't know that CA has a year round growing season! Wonder if they will stock snow shovels?

I didn't think I'd ever say it but I actually agree with what the WalMart "Garden Section" guy said.

First, although we can grow something all year round in California, "wildflowers" perform best when sown in late fall here so that they can grow with the late fall and winter rains and bloom winter through spring and sometimes into fall.

Secondly, and this is the trouble, seed packet companies package seed fresh for one season, put them out for sell and then take them back at the end of the season to make sure customers don't get old seed. The end of the traditional spring "seed season" has come. Seed companies don't know a fall "seed season" so we in California have a hard time finding windflower seeds for fall sowing.

Go to a reputable nursery for your fall seeds, but you better get them soon for planting time as they will be gone by then. I have seen them in years past at Lowes and HD.
I have to stock up on trimmer line, hose nozzles etc cuz my Lowes puts everything away and the snow line is just 10 miles away so I will see those supplies out soon.

At the risk of sounding "superior", I believe that in order to keep current, fresh, with it, in tune, in sync and up-to-date, you have to know how to operate at least a computer. What many folks who won't use them don't realize is that the computer can and will save you soooo much time and even $$$ (time=$$$). It opens the world up to you and keeps you current. It's amazing how much you can learn from being computer literate. I can't imagine why on earth anyone wouldn't want to be computer literate and have access to one.

There is good in the people. A spirit is emerging of fairness, truth in reporting and a desire to return the people's voice to government. Beautiful and inspiring. Maybe because I already live alone, I always try to see the beauty of the world around me. Just this morning, while walking Carmelita, I saw two different parents with their children, taking a walk, enjoying the mild temps. I spoke to one, my neighbor across the street. He had his 18 month old daughter in a backpack on his back. As soon as I said "hi", that baby's face lit up in a big smile. She is the happiest baby and they are a very nice little family. I am blessed to have nice neighbors all of whom I met while walking my dogs over the years. Yes, it's a difficult time and I miss being able to just head out with friends for fun times, but it is a good time to look inward and try to appreciate all that I have and what I can do to help others. Thanks for sharing this.

They are more than WallyWorld, but Theodore Payne is still relatively reasonable, you just have to practice some to get good germination rates on certain natives. Also, I think if you have to start a new bed or do additional watering, it might be better to wait. But if the area is receiving water and looks bare, I'd through in some coreopsis, cosmos, phacelia or Chia and hope for the best.
