Just bought 3 Burgmansia and they look terrible. Pictures inside

Below are several pictures. Look at them and tell me in idiots terms where I need to start please. They look so bad. I bought just one, but the lady gave me two more for free. I only paid 10.99 for all three. I need advice on what to do. The leaves are all yellow and ugly looking. Some if the pictures below show that, and actually to me the pictures look better than the plants actually look in person.

My main concern is that even some of the new growth is yellow. Even the little small leafs that are just popping out of the main stem are coming out yellow. She said it is possible that being in the container they are in, and being fertilized could do that. They were sitting in direct sun. Someone else told me they have a nutrient deficiency. I'm already worrying and searched and found something called mosiac disease. Does these look like they have it?

Please advise me on where I should begin? Do I need to just cut back everything, leaving only the main stems and a few leaves or what. How can I bring these back to good health. I need advise on placement, best soil and whatever else you all can advise. I've never had one of these, and now I have three and don't know what to do. They're so ugly and yellow in person

I'm just a guy who loves flowers and know nothing about them. I have a brown thumb instead of a green one. If these were yours, what exactly would you do, again, in idiot terms. I'm freaking out.

Hold on, they are not that bad....and with help and suggestions I think you might just have gotten a really good deal.

I would personally go to extremes..others would say "Scott, your nuts" but this is what I would do here in my Zone 6b...in this order...I would spray them heavily with a garden house, remove them from their pots, spray off as much soil from roots (carefully) and inspect roots, repot in new clean terra cotta pots just a size or two larger then what they are currently potted in, soil mix - I'd use Miracle Grow Potting Soil 1/3, Perlite 1/3, Sphagnum Peat 1/3 mixed very well, top plants with 1/2" - 1" Perlite, water with Miracle grow fertilzer, superthrive, & ferti-lome Liquid Iron - all at 1/4 strength until draining throughly out bottom of pots, place pots in low windy area with lots of shade for 1 month, then slowly expose to more and more light. I would probably even go as far as trimming 1/4 of plants from the tops now....Will encourage branching - dispose of the tips, nobody wants diseased stock.

Hey...best of luck - I'm sure we will be seeing beautiful pics of huge blossoms and scents that fill your neighborhood next spring - early summer 2010....!!!!

I'm close to your zone I guess -- I'm also Zone 5, around Toronto. Of your list, we have grown these ones: Fair Bianca - Myrr scent, not as strong as some others and I happen to really like it. To my nose, this one smells like Black Licorice. Fairly compact with tons of white blooms, clustered together. I love this rose. No fuss, no disease trouble ... almost carefree. It does like sunlight. I moved her after her second year into a corner spot where I could smell her as I walked by, and she got more sunlight there and seems a lot happier than before. Now, a wonderful rose. Tess of the d'Urbervilles - Kind of a climber, but not too much because of the winter dieback. She's root hardy for sure but you'll need to prune off about half of the canes each Spring. She'll shoot up again, but won't "climb" the way you might be thinking. More like a trellised rose, or against a wall? Also slightly more of a pinkish-red than I was expecting. Still, a beautiful rose. The Prince - One of my favourites! The colour is to die for. The fragrance is also to die for! Likes a lot of sun. He is a compact little plant, but I wouldn't want to be without him. Some people don't like him because the lower half of the plant can be a little leggy and barren, and a but ugly. Mine is pretty good and I have lavender planted in front which hides any barren legs and just looks wonderful. Don Juan - This one is in too much shade to really bloom properly, have to prune the tree that has overgrown next to it. But it seems hardy, I don't winter protect it. Beautiful red blooms. I should add that I don't winter protect any of my roses (except the Noisette) except for the first year. I pile cedar mulch the first winter, but I leave them after that and they do just fine! I would suggest that you make sure to ammend your soil properly before planting, and not just the rose planting holes but the entire area. If I could fix one thing in my gardening experience, I would do this :) And all of your roses will be much happier for it! Also, I should also add that all the roses came from either Pickering or Hortico, grafted. I bury them very deeply, partially to protect from cold winters, and partially to encourage them to go own root. Not sure which ones actually have, but I'm in a very similar situation as you. The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild - I have always wanted this one, but have never gotten around to it yet. Mostly because of the name, although the peony-like blooms looks so blousy and beautiful to me :) We had Golden Celebration but it didn't last through it's first winter. To be fair, it was in a pot not in the ground and roses here (no matter which kind) have trouble surviving the winters in a pot. It was doomed from the start, and I suspect would do much better in the ground but I can't be sure.

Yep, just to add another bit of agreement on the issue. I just had my Caesarstone counters installed, and we have 3 locations where it was a tight "inside corner". I was asked to sign a waver that since they are less than the manufacturer's recommended 3/8's inch radius to "reduce potential crack propagation as recommended by the manufacturer's fabrication guidelines". I never heard of such a thing, so a quick search turned up the same facts on Caesarstone's literature. I decided to go with a 3/8's inch radius on the counter top, and allow for a seam by the "zero radius" kitchen sink to keep the tight corner there (sink location allowed for this very easily which may not be the case with your location.) In your pictures the edging does not look even at all though, and should probably be fixed, but I would expect to get smaller than the 1/4 the kris mentioned, and would be very hard to modify post installation (I would guess). The edging should be easily fixed on-site. My advice is only worth as much as you pay for it though, since I'm not a fabricator. ;-) I'll be posting pictures of my sink/cuts in a week or so.

My POV based on my experiences and years of interacting with innumerable growers on the topic of container media: 1. It's about impossible to tell if a failing plant is getting too much or too little water- even with Al's help (too little is very common). If a failing plant is in a well-made gritty mix and is collapsing due to a watering issue, it's almost certainly due to not watering frequently enough. You actually have to work quite hard to over-water plants in a medium that holds little or no perched water. There are some plants that can be overwatered because their nature is to not tolerate much water in the soil at ALL (cacti, quiescent mesembs, .....), but for the overwhelming majority of plants discussed on this forum, it would be difficult to over-water. Any plant will fail if you don't water it, regardless of the medium it's in. It's a fact that plants in the gritty mix will need to be watered more often than plants in Miracle Grow and others similar. If someone doesn't want to water more often than these soils require watering, don't use the gritty mix - simple. 2. In dry or hot weather, it can be extremely difficult to provide enough water. Until the entire pot is colonized with roots, you might need to water daily, or even more often. Many of the plants I grow would be considered large houseplants in very small pots, so my plant mass to soil volume requires much closer attention to watering than someone growing in larger pots that would hold 2-4 times the amount of soil relative to plant mass. I pretty much use the 1:1:1 ratio for all those plants normally grown indoors. In winter, under lights I have no problem keeping plants hydrated for 4 or 5 days, and in summer when houseplants are outdoors, I water daily or every other day, depending on the weather (primarily sun, temps, and wind). When a plant is newly planted in the gritty mix, it's necessary to retain a mental image of where the roots are and make sure you water frequently enough that the medium surrounding the roots doesn't grow dry. Generally speaking, these newly repotted plants should be in shade and out of wind to minimize transpirational water loss. I can't remember the last time I lost a plant due to the roots drying out after a repot. If you don't feel as though you want to nurse your plants through the just repotted stage - don't use the gritty mix - simple. 3. Grit doesn't anchor a plant until the entire pot is filled with roots, so tall plants topple over, and hanging plants fall out. At least until the roots have filled the entire pot, you need to devise something to anchor your plants in their pots: bungee cords, tape, chicken wire, zip ties, etc. All else equal, the gritty mix provides more shear strength than peat-based mediums. So, while a recently root pruned plant potted in the gritty mix might need support, the need for supporting the same plant in soils like MG would actually be greater. Whenever we root prune or bare root, especially top-heavy plants like trees, no matter what the medium used - they should be supported. This is not an issue unique to the gritty mix by any means. 4. Special watering devices and methods are needed for some plants. Unlike soil that absorbs and spreads water, grit lets it run directly through, so you must water the entire surface of the grit, or dip the entire pot in water to wet it through. you can't water a plant from a corner, or around the edges. I have to use a laboratory squeeze bottle to water several of my plants because I need to direct a narrow stream of water between dense leaves that completely cover the surface of the pot. It's a pain, but my other choice is to submerge the pots, which means I have to carry them and a bucket of water around several times a week, which increases the risk of them being dropped or spilled. I think that if a person chooses to submerge the pots when they can envision so many potential catastrophes associated with that method, another method is probably a good idea. It is true that water quickly runs through the gritty mix, so you need to try to wet the entire surface of the soil as you water. This is also not a problem unique to the gritty mix. The gritty mix won't become hydrophobic, like peat based soils, unless you have a lot of dry algae growing on the soil surface (but then you have a larger problem), VERY often, problems arise when peat-based soils dry down to their hydrophobic stage, at which point only a tiny fraction of the water applied is absorbed, while all the rest runs down between the soil mass & pot wall. At least if you cover the entire surface of the gritty mix with water until it flows out of the drain hole, you can be pretty certain you're wetting the soil mass & not just throwing water at it. I use some very sophisticated watering tools: The tool above is a very simple water brake. You can buy one for the hose end for a couple of bucks. That's ALL you'll need to water anything in the gritty mix outdoors. I use it in combination with a hose-end shut-off that allows me to control flow volume. The sophisticated tool below is what I use to water all my indoor plants during the winter. I have 2 growing tables in the basement that are 4ft by 8 ft. I have about 100 plants packed onto the two tables, so the plants in the middle are 2 ft from the edge. I water ALL of those plants with this watering can and never once empty a drainage saucer (I use white plastic plates to catch the water that runs through, and it evaporates in a day or 2) or move a plant. I took the rose (nozzle) it came with off and slipped a nozzle from a tube of caulking over the spout. It gives me pinpoint accuracy so I can cover the entire soil surface - simple. 5. It is easy to overwater with soil, but it's even easier to underwater in grit. There is little margin for error. If a plant wilts one day, it'll likely be dead 24 hours later if it's not watered. You can't put it off to the next day. It's easy to underwater in any medium if the grower doesn't hold up his half of the bargain. Under-watering is another issue not unique to the gritty mix, and to say there is little margin for error is deceiving. Any plant that is wilting in any mix is likely to be just as dead next day in whatever medium it's in. The gritty mix does require more frequent waterings, but that doesn't mean the chance of under-watering is increased. One either waters on time or doesn't. The consequences are the same regardless of the medium used. Where fast draining soils shine is in the area that produces the most problems - OVER-watering. As already mentioned, you'd have to work hard at over-watering media like the gritty mix, while excess water retention is an inherent problem in almost all peat-based media. 6. You end up a slave to watering schedules. You can't really have a friend or neighbor water your plants when you go out of town for a week. Every plant ends up on a different schedule, and you can't just stick a finger in to see if it's damp. It's too complicated and confusing to most people. A slave? Different schedules for every plant? In summer, I make the watering rounds daily, but my situation is a little unique. I have lots of bonsai in very small soil volumes, some of which DO require watering daily. Those plants I'm growing pots the same size others might use are watered every 3-4 days, 2-3 days when it's really hot. I water almost EVERYTHING (other than bonsai) on the same schedule. In the winter, every plant except 1 large Fockea edulis and about 4 very small bonsai gets watered every 4 days. The F edulis gets watered every 8 days & the tiny bonsai every 2 days - not hard at all to keep track of. In summer, I have a number of bonsai that get watered daily. The rest of the plants get watered every 2-3 days, depending on weather. Soils that hold little to no perched water ALLOW you to water on a schedule, which is MUCH easier than trying to figure out when 200 plants in a peat mix might or might not need water - nothing complicated or confusing about it - simple. 7. Grit is extremely heavy and clumsy. A five-gallon potted tree that you might've easily moved outside during the day, and back in each night becomes a chore that needs to be set on wheels. Because the pot's depth plays into how much water it holds in relation to the soil volume, there is no way to be exactly precise in measuring the weight of the gritty mix vs a peat mix. In 1-3 gallon containers, the gritty mix weights about 2-3 times what a peat-based mixture weighs when both are dry. When both are saturated in the same size container, the gritty mix weighs about 25-33% more than the peat-based soils. I grow some pretty big plants, and don't think twice about the weight. The term clumsy to describe a soil wouldn't have crossed my mind. When spring temps are erratic and my numerous plants need to be moved in and out to avoid chill-related injury. I put them on nursery carts and move 50 plants in and out in 5 minutes - simple. 8. It wastes a lot of water (and expensive fertilizer). I have to go around dumping drip trays after every watering. In a dry climate, of if you have heat on indoors to dry the air, it might not be an issue, but we're right around 100% humidity indoors and out here. As noted, I've never dumped a drip tray - they do evaporate indoors long before the next watering is required. Outdoors, it's a non-issue for me. Again - not an issue unique to the gritty mix. If you're watering correctly and flushing the soil when you water, you have water in the collection saucer. If you don't, you're promoting salt build-up in the soil, which comes with its own set of problems. 9. Self-watering pots and devices won't work with grit. Completely true ...... by design. The gritty mix is purposely designed so it doesn't support the perched water SWCs depend on to supply water to the plant. Even the 5:1:1 mix isn't suited well to SWCs. Most growers that prefer bark-based media and the convenience of SWCs add additional peat to the 5:1:1 mix so they end up with something like a 5:3:1 mixed of bark:peat:perlite Growing is all about compromise. Growers that want the convenience of week-long intervals between waterings aren't going to get it w/o sacrificing a measure of their plants' potential. When we depend on water-filled pores between soil particles to extend watering intervals, we also accept the fact that roots occupying the saturated portion of the media are functioning very poorly and dying from a lack of oxygen. This is very expensive in terms of energy outlay, and robs the plant of energy that might have been applied to something other than regenerating lost rootage. It's up to the individual to decide what best allows them to order their priorities as they choose. Blaming failures on the mix w/o some feel for what else might have gone wrong is very unfair. Very often, we discover that in their haste to 'get the mix made', it was made with ingredients that shouldn't have been used (too large). Often, too, growers go forward with root pruning that's poorly timed and before the undertaking is well-understood before repotting into the gritty mix. When a plant is doomed before the repotting session is completed, it's hardly reasonable to blame the medium. I repeat over and over that I'm not selling recipes, I'm selling a concept and encouraging people to understand what drives the concept so they can make use of it to avoid the issues that bring 90% of the growers to this forum seeking remedial advice for problems ultimately related to poor root health. This thread is a perfect example. I extolled the virtues of fast draining soils and never mentioned a recipe or any particular soil until the topic was broached in a fashion biased enough that I felt an alternate view would be appropriate. Since you seem to love this tile, what about trying to use a white caulk in the corners instead of the contrasting color. It may make the tiles look like they fold into the corner. You can try this before by just cutting some strips of paper and taping them up , then step back and see what you think. On a side note - was the floor tested for water? Those tiles are too big for a regular shower drain - it probably should have been a trench drain, unless there are diagonal cuts through the tile pitching them all to the drain ( can't tell in the picture ). Be careful moving forward - there seems to be some incorrect things happening here. Good luck!

Those appear to have a deficiency, not Mosaic Virus and they really look pretty good. They just look a bit chlorotic but that's no big deal. I used to use Epsom Salts but many of the plants are deficient in iron as well as magnesium. I'm using Cal-Mag Plus now which contains iron, magnesium, calcium and nitrogen and is specifically for treating chlorosis. You can use it when you water and as a foliar spray. It's made by Botanicare but I'm sure there's other companies that make similar solutions. If you can't find it just try some Epsom Salts. 1 tbl sp of ES to a gallon of water 1x/mo. The Cal-Mag can be used 1x/wk along with your regular fertilizer.

I want to add a few things. I'm not trying to contradict Scott but I don't see any reason to cut them back or repot them. I wouldn't shade them for a month either. They look like they've been in the sun already and should be able to reaclimate witin a week. I'm also anti Miracle Grow products. They have a high salt content that can build up over a long period but there's plenty of people that swear by it so I guess it's a personal choice. Any soil is fine as long as it's not that water retaining crap if you ammend it with perlite, coir, etc to promote drainage. If you want a soil that you can use straight out of the bag with no ammending use one of the all purpose Farfad mixes, like 3B or 52 Mix. There's also a brand called Happy Frog (I know, stupid name lol) that contains mycorrhizae and humic acid.

See thats why you you have to use Epsom Salts once monthly; that explains an awful lot now.....LMAO...!!!

I do swear by MG, I only use ES when I first put my babies out in late April/mid May and then again before bring them all back inside towards the end of October. At exactly the dose Karen has so graciously offered!!!

I'd leave them out longer but thats when Jill takes over the porch and kicks my butt to the curb...Halloween Decoration/Thanksgiving Decorations/Christmas Lights, Christmas Trees, and Christmas Music invade my semi-partial greenhouse porch escape from school, the daily grind, and the plainly insane...LOL!!!

P.S. lovetogrowflowers, what ever you chose to do, chances are you will do just fine. I do, however, have to agree with Karen on the chlorosis deficiencies, I think she hit the nail on the head with that suggestion...but then again thats why she is the resident Master Gardner!!!!!

Karyn, Scott, don't you think that the growing tips look stunted, like broadmites?
Lovestogrowflowers, do those new little leaves feel really thick and hard, not soft and supple like the larger leaves?
FORBID knocked out my broadmite infestation that my brugs had in July. Spraying hard with water may have some effect on broadmites, if you have them, but I have too many brugs to do that treatment.
Listen to Karyn....... Don't cut the tops, that's where your blossoms will come from, and just move to larger pots with good draining soil. And if there is a mineral deficiency, I just add Ironite granular at the correct rate of application, because the granules have calcium and trace minerals with them. Has worked really good for me. Ironite also comes in a spray.

These pics do resemble broad mite infestation...gottahosta, has a point!

Now, judging by the size of the siding on the house, the Astroturf, windowsill, and the chair....I would guess that those pots are 1 gallon pots...right? They also look to be stem cuttings, probably rooted last year and then not very well cared for since. So - I'm a bit confused as to "Why not trim back the plants now?" Forgoing buds this late in the season on plants in this condition probably isn't a bad idea...no?
I would definitely trim, (the more I think about it - the more I'm thinking, cut it back so you just get as many "Y's" as you can and get rid of all the greenwood cuttings - bag them and get them as far away from your plants as possible) knowing chances of getting blooms this year would be out of the question - in order to save these plants, put all my effort, money, & time into making the plants as strong as possible now for a bigger and more healthy plant next season...why carry over plants in not 100% condition (maybe 60 - 75%) over winter. She could and I believe trim now, treat now, and enjoy for many many years to come.
Just my opinion - I'm sure a few more members will chime in tonight....all excellent options so far...!

Brenda a mineral deficiency can give the same appearance and make the leaves brittle. I thought for sure I had another Broad mite infestation and treated with Forbid but nothing happened. Any other time I get results really fast so I took some foliage to the guys at the hydroponics store. These guys are kind of odd but incredibly knowledgeable. They thought it was a mineral deficiency by looking at the leaves but couldn't be sure. Evidently I should have also brought a soil sample in, oh well. Anyway I treated with the Cal-Mag and the problem resolved within 10 days. The foliage is soft and normal looking. I was advised to continue with the Cal-Mag weekly. It's a sight of a lot cheaper then the Forbid! lol

Lovetogrowflowers what zone are you in? Potting up has a lot to do with how much time is left in your growing season. You also never transplant for a week minimum after getting a new plant unless it's in a severly damaged container. Even if you have roots coming from the drainage holes you want to give the plants time to adjust.

Brenda I thought broadmites to for the curled under leaves...Not connecting the dots to the other bad looking things.

Thanks for all your replies. I will definetely take advice from this forum. I can tell you folks know what you're talking about. Now, my only concern is the hardness of the leaves. They are curled and brittle. Hopefully it's not mites. I also read not to use tap water somewhere. What do I water with then?

I would treat them for deficiency. rinse the top leaves with the hose and hope it comes from the deficiency...but the pros will answer that one better.

All I know is with the drought and having SO MANY brugs...there is NO WAY I could NOT USE TAP WATER.

Thanks so much. Everyone here is so helpful. I did go to Lowes, Homedepot anad Wal-Mart just now and found nothing called Cal-Mag. The only thing I found that may help (and need your input) is Ironite.

It contains Nitrogen 7.0%, Phosphate 6%, soluble potash 6%, sulfer 1%, boron .02%, Iron .1%, water soluble iron .1%, Manganese .05%, water soluble mangnaese .05%, zinc .05% and water soluble zinc .05%

I've used it before on my azaleas. My question this time is, do I use the ironite along with the tablespoon of Epsom Salt? And, since I do use Miracle Gro liquid mixed with water and have had luck with it, when should I fertilize? I was concerened that the leaf discolorazation was to much fertilizer.

So, the break down of question are:

1. Do I use the Ironite along with the epsom salt or don't use the ironite at all? If not, I seen nothing else. So, I assume just use the epsom salt.

2. Do they look like they have been over fertilized? If not, when would you fertilize?

3. I hate these hard brittle, curled leaves. If by some chance it is Broad Mites, what do I use to treat them with? I cannot afford Forbid, $229.

The funny thing is, this nursery had over 100 of these plants and they all looked identical. Yellow, curling brittle leaves. Just trying to figure this out.

#1 yes you may use both. Epsom salts is a tonic and enables the plant to take up more nutrients along with giving it a boost of Magnesium. It is NOT a fertilizer.

#2 They do not look over fertilized to me, they may have had some in the past month because the newer growth is a darker green.Nurseries are well know to not fertilize, it is not cost efficient/effective. I would start with the ironite and Epsom salts first and wait 2 weeks to see the results, then start fertilizing, otherwise you will not know what made the difference.

#3 I have never had to deal with broad mites, I will leave this one up to others to answer.

As for re-potting, I still have not seen what zone you are in to know what to suggest.

Just use the Ironite, not the ES as the Ironite contains manganese. Does the container say how often to apply? If not I'd probably go with 1x/mo but use fertilizer weekly. Brugs are very heavy feeders. You want to D/C fertilizer about 4 weeks before it's time to let them go dormant, if they are going to go dormant. It really would help to know where you are located. If you do end up having Broad mites you could try Neem but I honestly don't think that does **** Do a search under broad mite treatment. I looked quickly and a number of sites came up. As for tap water I really don't have a choice. I have to use it. I collect rain water but there's never enough. My plants don't seem to mind but I have no idea what kind of water I have, hard vs soft?

Karyn, Thank you as well for all the advice you have given. I'm in Newnan, GA 30263. I think if I read the map right I'm in Zone 8. The ironite just says add ironite to your plants each time you water as part of a continuos feeding program at the following rates:

For most flowering plants 1/2 capful per galloon of water.

In Georgia I would plant those Brugs into the ground NOW to give them as much time as possible to get settled in before winter.Do not cut them back at all prior to or after planting. Once they die back with the cold, mulch well over top of them ( 12 inches would be good) and they will come up in the spring and start all over again for you and be much healthier over all.

It appears that Ironite has the same application rate as the Cal-Mag but I wouldn't use it at every watering or you'd be using it daily. I'd use it along with your fertilizer. I don't think the application instructions take into account that most brugs need daily watering during the summer. BTW if Ruth Ann says you can use the ES and Ironite together I'd go with that as she has more experience with brugs then I do. She also grows some of the biggest plants I've seen outside of a tropical zone.

Absolutely, follow ruth ann - in your zone get them into the earth ASAP...Not to worry to much re: Tap water...I don't know anyone who gets enough rain to water strictly with rain water, get addition if you can...but definitely don't allow this to haunt you. As far as the Ironite and ES use together. I strictly container grow - and I've used both for years...no problem there...however, I never use any chemicals, amendments, or fertilizers at full strength, I've always gone with 1/4 strength of label suggestions and apply 2X as often...tend to work even with pests...for me at least.

Best of luck with your venture in the Brugs, soon you'll find your planting Datura...then something else...and again now your searching for room for yet another plant!!! Very addictive hobby....LOL..!!! Have fun with it - never be afraid to ask question, experiment on inexpensive plants, and I really want to see pics once you get them in the ground.....

I'm by far no brug expert, but I do have a hort. degree. I had the same thought as Brenda, only I thought the curled deformed leaves looked like thrip damage too me.
As far as a deficiency that causes deformed/curled leaves, that would be Calcium and or Boron.
