Back From The Almost Dead All Day Adenium Archive

This adenium at one time was a very nice grafted plant. Then some twisted mind vandalized my greenhouse a few years back. I lost a couple thousand adenium from a very hard freeze.

This one happened to be very close to the heat source so only the top froze out. Since I had gone from adenium rich to adenium poor in only a few hours, it seemed like a good idea at the time to try and salvage any I could.

I cut off the frozen dead flesh and let it sit for a few months to see if anything would happen. Here it is today.

Man, it looks like you could hide a village in those roots (a la Baobab).
I'm very fond of the mix you're using. Is that top-dressing, or through and through?

That's a Turface top dressing. It keeps the soil from washing out in a heavy downpour.

Well that's great news :-) Meyer's are especially sensitive to light and temperature changes, and they're also "hungry" Citrus plants. If it's blooming, it needs nutrients...so resume fertilization immediately. A fertilizer in a 3:1:2 ratio is excellent for Meyer's. Keep after those pests (aphid? whitefly?) and the tree should be fine. A healthy, regularly fertilized tree will be able to resist and recover from pest damage. The very best time to re-pot would have been between flushes of growth in the past two months (given your So Cal location), but I understand that the tree was recovering. If the plant is healthy enough now, it should be fine with a re-potting, though. I've certainly re-potted Citrus at worse times of the year. Can you post a picture of the tree? Josh

Usually, PLs are divided instead of repotted, but either can be done. First, your tree is not going to die if you can purge your thought process of the idea wilting means the plant needs more water. Have faith in the idea that plants in a damp/moist medium will always be able to take up water more efficiently than plants in a wet/soggy medium. The recovery will take 1 of 3 paths. 1) New growth will stop and the leaves will remain in a wilted condition for a period of time until enough new roots are generated to meet the top's moisture needs, Soon after the plant regains turgidity (stops wilting) it will resume growth. 2) Many leaves will die due to the fact a lesser volume of roots isn't going to be able to meet the moisture demands of the pot, which will cause the plant to literally wall off the leaves to prevent further moisture loss, or 3) you could remove at least half of the existing leaves to easy the o/a demand for water. If you do that, concentrate on removing the oldest leaves. If you look very carefully. You'll see the younger leaves are attached to the crown above or closer to the center than attachment point of older leaves. Resume fertilizing when you see the plant pushing new growth. Al

Hi Catlover, Yes, this orchid died. Know that, when people start out in orchids, they have casualties along the learning curve. Lack of light could well be the cause of your orchid's death, and there would be other variables to nail down before repotting an orchid, if you didn't - size of pot relative to size of roots, # of holes in the pot, potting medium, checking for moisture before watering, air movement, temperature ranges, etc. This may seem complex. However, many items are one-time things, such as pot size, and household temps are usually fine for Phals. Keeping moisture, light, temps, and air movement kinda balanced involves checking resources and then going with an initial set up. This can be modified, depending on feedback from your orchid & more research with your resources. If you have houseplants and would rather concentrate on them and forget about this orchid stuff, I get it. I've got four nandinas that look terrible. I may trim them back some, but had decided to give them a full year before I do anything drastic. At the park where I take the pug to walk, there ae some nandinas that look almost the same as mine, except they have some green leaves at the bottom. So I'm hoping mine will come back. What is the name of this jatropha? I just picked up a couple of really nice ones at my fav nursery in Santa Fe (TX) last week. Jim wasn't there and the girl working just knew it was a jatropha.

Those are both sweet plants! Until I saw the caudex of the J. p. (?), I thought you might have a flowering Kalanchoe 'Kewensis', until I saw the monster root. TFS!

Thanks everyone. I call it Jatropha berlandieri (Syn: Jatropha cathartica). Who knows what it really is. :-)

rjj1, that is very unusual looking plant. I never see it before. Look so healthy and caudex is nice size for it's age.

I think we should bring back public flogging as the penalty for people who randomly damage other people's property.

But I'm very impressed that your adenia came back so beautifully. I'm starting to get a hankering for one of these fat-bottomed babies. . .

So sorry that you lost your Adeniums in that way it must have been devastating, all that effort and patience's, watching, waiting and wondering. My heart breaks for you :(. I have about 70 and I wouldn't want to lose any of them, I love each and every one of them :P. This is my first winter with them so I'm a little nervous but they are doing well so far. Where you able to save many?

Very few survivors worth having from the greenhouse. Mainly things that were overpotted and stuff I was getting impatient with. But I had quite a few nice plants wintering in the house, so it was just one of those things.

In the grand scheme of things, they were only plants. All things work for the good. :-) I'm now more selective about what I keep and first and foremost, they are only plants. I can take them or leave them. I have a passion for growing plants, But I could very easily compost every one of them. No more emotional ties to "things" outside of what's really important in life.
