Pumice....A great inexpensive find for many I hope!
Comments (18)Hey, What's up with your town anyway Pug? I have a whole bag of that Napa stuff on my porch, and I have yet to try it...It definately has a nice color..I think I remember jsutaguy saying at one time he likes it alot. If he did, then it is definately good stuff and a great substitute for turface as penfold2 says. That is why I some a while back, I was too lazy to drive 15 miles to get turface, when the Napa store up the street had Floor Dry. Was it justaguy who said he liked it? Someone did, and was having great success with it. They also said it looks nicer in a soiless mix.. . It's funny how some areas make it so difficult to find this stuff, and yet places like my area, I can buy all 3 products within a 20 mile radius..Sorry you can't get the stuff so easy..:-( By the way, I have never seen the barbecue lava mentioned. Maybe someone will hep you on that one...Sorry... Are you sure that NO one in your area sells anything like turface, pumice, or Floor Dry? I hope you find something. Penfold2, thanks for the link. There is definately a vast difference between both product for such close wording..:-)...See Moreperlite vs pumice ? your preference?
Comments (47)As I understand it the point of using porous materials is not to increase/decrease water retention on the outside of the particles, but to provide sufficiently large pores to allow air circulation around the roots while still providing enough humidity (from water stored in the inner pores) to help the fine roots to stay alive. That's the point of using products like Turface or Floor Dry. I'm just wondering if pumice is really in the same category. If you look at xerophyte nyc's experiment here, you'll see that a similar substrate, lava rock, holds very little water. (Thank you for that, xero!) The pores in volcanic rock may be so poor at storing water as to make these substrates comparable to granite, a substrate used for its minimal water retention....See MoreDark Alternative to Perlite & Pumice
Comments (5)I prefer not to luse loamy type of soils in a terrarium for the simple reason that they tend to clog up over the course of time due to decomposition and make changing the soil base necessary in due time. Rather I opt for bedding types of substrates that are mostly wood products and that can be mixed with other natural products such as twigs and leaves from hardwood trees and various grades of gravels to help extend aeration life. One of the commercial products that I enjoy using is by T-Rex, called Jungle Bed-click here to see If the plants you are planning on using in your terraria are finely rooted then you may want to opt for a blend of a fine fir bark, peat moss, and freshwater sand that can be enhanced with ground up hardwood leaves and a fine grade of gravel....See MorePortulacaria afra in nothing but pumice (or turface, or...?)
Comments (35)I noticed some wrinkling starting on the leaves of one and just went ahead and watered them all. Each stem is in it's own 4" nursery pot (the kind with lots of good-sized holes on the bottom)s i had been putting the pots on various saucers to catch the water that came out of the bottom, but to try to clean up the area I put down a double layer of bounty paper towels and transferred them to that. To my surprise, the paper towel began sucking what seemed like an awful lot of water out of the pots. Since they had stopped drop-draining a while ago I assumed they were pretty fully drained but the paper towel told a different story. So now my question is, should I keep putting the containers on a paper towel or is this pulling too much water out of the soil too quickly?...See MoreRelated Professionals
