Sarracenia alata. Looks a lot like the ones I encountered when I was down in Kiln, Mississippi.

I agree with sarraceniahunter, those plants are definitely Sarracenia alata. What type of soil are they growing in? How dry is the soil and the air? What I can see from the pictures, the soil looks pretty dry. When did you discovered them since you liked in your house?

Have you check for other carnivorous plants, like sundews and butterworts, or even other species of sarracenias. Sometimes when thereÂs one, there are usually other types of carnivorous plants growing side by side. So look around, do a little of exploring. See if you find some more of these interesting plants

I have not found any more types of plants yet, but I will keep looking.

The soil, I have no idea, I don't have a way to test it or anything. There is a lot of dead leaves and things.

The area is not the best forthe plants actually, I'm suprised they are growing here. It seems like if the trees don't get thinned in this area they might die out. They are in mostly shade, and the "wings" on the pitchers are very wide, indicating a lack of enough light.

The soil is very dry right now, but this is in a low area, and I could see marks where it is normally very boggy. We are in a drought right now. I imagine that typically this area is probably even too wet to walk in without rain boots, it is just dry now due to no rain in months.

I knew there were some sarracenia growing in my area but had never discovered any yet. We found these the other day when my son got lost in the woods and we went looking for him. That was one good thing that came out of a horrible day.

i went looking for some wild cp's. First in some bamboo woods down the road, no luck there. Then me and freind went to some marsh-like area about 2 miles in diameter, this place really got my hopes up cause it would be a great place for them to grow, cause its very humid, very warm, flat, and in full sun all day. We searched for a while and didnt find any cp's but i want to look there more. And for all that, you accidentally stumble upon some pitcher plants in your back yard. Lucky :p

I have found in my adventures in South Mississippi, that where you find S. alata, you'll usually find sundews. Drosera brevifolia will tolerate a much dryer habitat than Drosera capillaris and filiformis. I discovered a colony of brevifolia growing on a clay embankment one time that was as dry as a powderhouse! There's probably a good stand in the vicinity. I'd almost bet my eye teeth!

OH!!!! Lucky you... I'm jealous. If your in a drought and the trees are closing in it might be time for a rescue. :) I NEVER advocate taking wild plants but if they are in danger of dying/being killed then it might be justified. Maybe even just a move to a better spot behind your house.

I agree, Clay, they are spingly and with large "wings" from lack of sun. The trees are closing in on them. Sarraceniahunter, I plan on looking some more, I would like to find some drosera out there too.

I was moving a rig over in Wayne County and found some that were in the same shape. The Drosera were plentiful though. The poor alatas were on their last legs.

Wayne County is pretty close to me. I will have to look again, hoepfully I can find some drosera. Things are crazy here right now, I will take that time to unwind and search out the CPs.

These in Wayne County were in the National Forest over there. Drosera brevifolia was growing out of clay banks beside the road. I've heard they could tolerate dryer conditions than most other Drosera, but that's just rediculous!
