Can this haworthia survive?

Hi everyone,

Recently bought a haworthia. I am concerned about its arriving condition.

The plant is small and shipped potted. When I took out stuffing paper, it got out of the soil without any attachment to the soil. Most of the roots had already died. Only one root remained white, but its tip started to shrival also.

I am not sure if this plant is going to be O.K with only one root, which seems start rotting too. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Yes, but give it a smaller pot to root in and lots of indirect/some direct light. Mist every day or so for a few weeks until it's not looked so peaked. You should be able to begin watering it in a month or so.

To add quick note, if you haven't done this yet, dab a bit of cinnamon on the roots & shake it off before you re-pot.

Cinnamon acts as an anti-fungal & is used on their plants by some people instead of commercial preparations of rooting hormone which usually contain some kind of anti-fungal.

I happen to have learned of this from Orchid Growers & Cinnamon is a lot cheaper than the other stuff; since I bake I ALWAYS have it on hand.

Oatmeal raisin anyone?

Oh they are tough little plants arent they?my plants suffered from irregular watering and they became limp and not growing that much.Then i figured that they need more water than say,cacti.Now i water them just like my other plants EXCEPT when they are dormant and/or they replace their roots.Even in winter i water them a little and they are happy as a pig in the mud!!!!so my advice would be to water your plant a little more..oh,and give it strong light if you can!! (Haworthia arachnoidea var nigricans seedling,its pot sometimes floods but it doesnt complain,it has excellent drainage!) This post was edited by angellilly on Mon, May 12, 14 at 17:15

nik, yes, I have a flowering tessellata right now and thought it was anemic, but when I think about it, that's how it always is. That's good to know. When I don't want the flower, I can easily pull it right out, but with retusas it's not so easy. I would like to echo Stush's caution. I mentioned I'm using extras as experiments. I've never had one melt because I've never had one outdoors (Edit: and in that heat), but I would imagine that could happen relatively fast.

bay area guy, I am in agreement with nik! As well as that, I am not sure what kind of pot and soil your plant is in, but make sure it's a well draining pot, and I recommend for soil using one that is specifically designed for Cactus and Succulents. I was able to find some at my local gardening center, but if there isn't one near you, amazon is a dear friend. Overall, your plant looks good and I am sure it will come back! Good luck

It'll be fine. Haworthias are notorious for losing their roots, and they almost always come right back. These look like healthy new roots, so I'd just follow Jeff's advice and only mist for a few weeks. When you start seeing new growth, it's ready for regular watering.

You guys are good really good. Mine all drop the roots this time of the year, they are winter growers, so don't be alarmed put them in the shade so it will be cool, that is what it needs this time of the year. In the winter, I move them to a bright shade area. Be vary carful of water this time of the year, until October when it cools down, I notice you live in Zone 6 where? Mine are in a hot valley very much like Africa. They like to be crowded often come up between the cracks in shale. Without water they will tolerate weather down in the low 20tys. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. Norma

Yep, but we're not as good as you.

Back in the day (when I owned tuberously-rooted Haworthias) the perfect mix was found - one part decomposed granite sand, one part top soil, three parts coir and various other elements (chin dribblings, pet hair), that were used to great effect with these plants. Too bad nothing else really liked it.

Thanks for everyone's suggestion. They are all very helpful.

To amccour, I ordered this plant from Ebay, I belive the seller imported his plants from Japan.

To norma, I live in philadelphia. The daily temperature is around 65-80 now. I try to keep them as cool as possible, especially at nights.

Hi Memder,

Well, if you liked Haworthias enough to order this all the way from Japan via EBay you may want to check out your local Cactus & Succulent Society. While I didn't know of it then (nor was I quite this into plants at the time) when I went to College in Philly, I know there's a local society.

I'm acquainted w/ a couple of its members; we see each other at an annual outing in NJ every summer. If you check them out & decide you'd like to join, pls. tell them that Karen, a former member of the NYC C&S Society suggested you check them out.
