I have a feeling it might be better sought as a pass-a-long plant, although you might get lucky and find it for sale. I got my white-flowering one, and the purple one that flowers at about the same time, as gifts from fellow gardeners. If you get to any of the plant swaps, you could ask for someone to bring some for you. I think it also depends a little on the micro-climate as to the date of flowering - there were both white and purple ones flowered and gone by the time mine flowered - and the lady who gave me mine had had hers open for a week or more, but hers are in a sheltered area, facing south, under 40-year-old crape myrtles.

We will be including wall ovens in our remodel of an "old" home for two reasons. I really wanted the double ovens and we had to choose between utilizing wall space for additional window or range -- we chose the window. Therefore we end up with a cooktop in the island the wall ovens. There will be plenty of long runs of countertop and few uppers, very simple cabinet details and as many local materials as we can find - reclaimed antique wood floors, soapstone from nearby and hopefully milkpaint on the cabinets. In trying to follow the mantra "form follows function", I am hopeful that in the end this kitchen will lend itself to the "sense" of a colonial kitchen, while serving a busy family of the 21st century. Will let you know in several months if it worked as framing is beginning as we speak! Cleo - your kitchen is beautiful and fits together in such a seamless manner. I especially appreciated seeing your butcherblock w/soapstone as I have been trying to talk my husband into that for our island. Rosie -- I love your reminder about the "nature" of an old kitchen as I, too, believe that we can combine the modern conviences and maintain that sense of simplicity and function by paying attention to those details that you mention. trailrunner - your kitchen is great and those ovens really do become part of the landscape w/o being a prominent feature -- so pretty.

Hi Karen, Apologies I didn't catch your question about the mix. Yes, it is primarily coir with bark and sand. Putting variety names on our cacti and succulents is something we're very aware of --- it comes up every year and, unfortunately, turns into a big political battle. There are a lot of folks here (including me) who understand the value of labeling plants by variety (especially me, actually, because I'm both a plant nut and the guy who gets screamed at on the phone by really frustrated home gardeners). On the other side, there's our production team that sees all the challenges of implementation. For example, in order to label them, we need to buy variety-specific tags, which we first need to get approved via the different retailer stores. We also have to figure out how to handle situations where there's a variety we don't grow enough of to meet minimum-order requirements from the tag manufacturer. They see challenges in setting up new procedures for quality control, because it's just as bad (or worse, as some angry gardeners have told me!) to mislabel plants. And then there are situations where, when we have a crop failure or an oversold situation, where we buy in more cacti and succulents from another grower. In those cases, we don't necessarily know what varieties we'll be getting. I know there are a lot of companies out there who do label their cacti and succulents properly, and they have the advantage of having done it right from the start, rather than re-engineer their whole process. It's so much easier to start right on a small scale and grow then to have to change the way you do things when you're shipping millions of plants a year. That said, those of us in the pro-labeling camp are continuing to push forward and the company is moving in the right direction overall. We're working on solutions to each of the challenges --- and I know eventually we'll get there. Unfortunately, it just won't be in 2018.
