Swamp Milkweed

I know that Monarchs like to feed from swamp milkweed, but will they also lay eggs on it, as they do for common milkweed? I have a butterfly garden, and I grow both, but as yet have not had anybody lay an egg..

I have seen the cats feeding on my Swamp and Butterfly milkweed,, but haven't ever found an egg on anything except my common.

In my experience, Swamp is the preferred plant for egg laying.

I disagree with pckenyon. I have the same issue for my swamp milkweeds that are planted in full, all day sun. I found this on wildflower.org: "The leaves on plants exposed to full sun are often purplish toward the end of the growing season." This is true for my gardens. My swamp milkweed leaves in shadier areas stay green.

What should I be looking for when Swamp Milkweed comes up again?

this is a bit late of a response but you should see a bunch of green little sprouts poking around exactly where the stalks were last year. I planted 1 stalk of cinderella milkweed last year and this year I had 5-6 stalks come up. the old stems were dried up so I cut them down and I thought there was no way they made it through the winter but they did. The stems coming up should be pencil thickness maybe even less they all vary but if you look around the stalks oblast years plants they should all be clumped somewhere near.

Funny, I was just about to ask the same thing. I planted 4 swamp milkweeds last fall and scattered a bunch of seed hoping to get some seedlings and so far no signs of life. Every other plant in my garden has emerged. It also didn't help that my local nursery had swamp milkweed and they were 6 inches tall already, but they probably came from a greenhouse, so I guess not a fair comparison :P

I have 'milkmaid' and 'soulmate' and could barely keep up with the eggs and cats that I had this summer. I also had four tropical milkweed and eggs were also laid on them.

When I was scrambling for more leaves for the cats that I brought in, I found some of the common weedy milkweed and brought it in for some of them. They much preferred it, but I only had a very small amount.

I planted swamp milkweed, butterfly weed, and tropical milkweed. For me, tropical milkweed is #1 closely followed by swamp milkweed. Butterfly weed was only munched when other milkweeds nearby were defoliated.

I would avoid cultivars at all costs. I bought Asclepias incarnata 'Ice Ballet' and it wasn't touched by the monarch caterpillars.

This year, we had a lot of rain over the season and the swamp milkweed was in prime condition...got a ton of eggs along with common.

I have one 'ice ballet' cultivar plant...it didn't get any eggs but it was a popular nectar plant. I did recently put some in to feed caterpillars and they ate it without any fuss.
