Adenium obesum plunge

Well, I think I may have started another addiction, just sowed (last evening) 360 adenium seeds from 13 different plants.

Used Jungle growth and perlite in equal parts with seeds layed on top and a light dusting of peat moss over the seeds. Watered with a mist setting and used the 18 pot plants trays that you buy annuals in at HDepot. They are all placed in partly shady spot in my yard. Will take some pictures weekly to gauge progress. I know there are a few adenium gurus in this forum, what can I expect? Most are 25 seeds of each plant, I am wondering hoe much variation from the mother plant and I also read that they can be bloomed in 7 months from sowing...?TIA

It's very possible to bloom in 7 months in zone 10. I've had it happen a few times here in zone 7.

If you get a few that look like the parent be happy. Don't have expectations of all of them being that way.

I prefer the randomness from seed on Adenium. Makes it fun.

#1 - Yellow Bird 20 seeds 7 35 pct
#2 - STar of yellow 25 seeds 23 92 pct
#3 - Green fairy 25 seeds 16 64 pct
#4 - True yellow 30 seeds 23 77 pct
#5 - Vanilla Ice 25 seeds 10 40 pct
#6 - Emerald 25 seeds 22 88 pct
#7 - The Peach 25 seeds 18 72 pct
#8 - Super Jao Saow 25 seeds 11 44 pct
#9 - Dark Red 25 seeds 23 92 pct
#10- Kaleidoscope 35 seeds 30 86 pct
#11- Purple Star 25 seeds 14 56 pct
#12- Blue Boy 25 seeds 17 68 pct
#13- Universal Star 25 seeds 21 84 pct

I was really disappointed, although 5 groups did from mid 80's to low 90's in percentage, most did poorly. The high numbers confirmed my media and methods are ok. I suspect a lot of the seeds were old. They varied in color, the lighter ones were larger and the darker ones smaller and I suspect, older and not viable anymore. I contacted my seller and gave him the news, I'm hoping he can send some replacements.

Rob, what I did is not that different from what happens in nature. The pods opened by themselves and the seeds were ready to fly away. Tyler, the seeds look fine. But interspecies crosses with arabicums (at least when the pollen-receiver is an arabicum) often don't result in viable seeds (if I recall correctly, Mark Dimmitt mentioned something about it in the Adenium Book). For instance Adenium arabicum X Adenium obesum. But in my case, it's Adenium obesum X Adenium arabicum, so with a little luck...

Fresh seed is good but even older seed is good /if/ properly stored. The problem is that most people don't bother and higher humidity levels render the seed nonviable quickly. Silica gel can be used but can lower the humidity below 5% and damage seeds. Mark Dimmitt says, "My seeds remain highly viable for at least 4 years at room temperature and less than 10% humidity. Silica gel can over-dry to less than 5% moisture and kill seeds. Unless you can monitor the moisture content, use powdered milk as the desiccant. It dries seeds to the ideal level (of 5-8%), and will not over-dry." Refrigerating them also helps as it slows down metabolic rates of both the seed itself and pathogens such as molds, mildew, bacteria, etc.

Hi I've bought seeds to grow adenium obesum ( mixed sort, I have one growing really well and another that's been sitting in limbo for a few weeks now, I'll attach a picture, my question is can I cover the soil with something as I keep getting black flies around them and I'm afraid they'll lay eggs and destroy them if they haven't already begun. I've never grown them before and I seen them in a botanical garden and loved the unusual look of them. There was 5 seeds but only two seemed to have worked. Any tips are also appreciated.

Hi Shimolee, maybe I can help. A few years ago we ordered 1 packet of seeds from Mr Ko of a double red/black. (KO_ebay 51.jpg) Here's the photo from Mr Ko's website. Mr Ko's photo. We got some singles, some doubles and we also got a triple. Some were red only, some were red with a black edge and some had a more black colour. We also had a pure black, single flower that we lost to rot the first winter. We kept the ones we liked the best and sold the others. They all flowered within the first year, some at only 7mths old. Here are a few photos of some of the results that we got from this seed. (Sorry, I don't have photos of all of them) They get more black colour and sometimes a purple/black shade depending on the weather here and the time of year. Hopefully this gives you some idea of what is possible from seed. We have not grown any from Rinoa, so I cannot comment on results from her seed. In Australia we have to grow from seed as we are not allowed to import plants. Rachel. :)
