Pics from the garden

Here are some pics I have taken in the last few days and didn't have time to post. I love the one of my devil dog smelling the purple flowers and checking out a bumble bee. Sorry, I hope its not too many. I have to go to bed soon. We are leaving for Baton Rouge in the morning and going to New Orleans Saturday and will be home late Sunday night. I hope I have internet access while I'm there. I hope I find some cool plants in the garden behind the old brothel we are staying at in New Orleans as well, lol. Oh, yeah, I finally have a few baby squash on my vine. Not what I had intended for the gazebo but that will come later, lol. The purple blue single flower is the tibuchina. The blooms only last one day and fall of so I was glad to catch one in flower.

Very prety Kristy, you have a nice variety of plants! So what did you decide to put in those dragon pots.. I can't tell what it is in the pic?

ROFLAMO would you believe tomatoes! After all the agony I went through debating my tomatoes somehow got planted in the only pots I had that would fit inside the dragon pots so I just stuck them in there. Next year I will do something awesome with them I promise, lol.

Thanks, Jo. It seems a spring fever has come upon me, and I spent almost the entire weekend browsing hosta catalogs and reading posts and doing some research about hostahostahosta. So....what else is new with the rest of the forum? Don keeps his garden so perfect, my first impulse is to ask him, "How many gardeners do you employ full time to keep it that nice?" Mine will never be so lovely. Somewhere I seem to remember pictures of the massive construction of curbed bed borders and paved pathways of this garden. THAT is total dedication, and also self-knowledge....Don knows his interest in hosta is a life long affair. I have to admire the garden on all points.

Lykaon, What a beautiful yard you have...it makes me realize I should really spruce up my edges...mine is way more "rustic", so to speak. I say "YES" to your idea on future hosta beds, you have such an excellent backdrop there for beds. What are your flowering shrubs, Viburnum? Not sure on the Thunderbolt question, it doesn't look quite like mine that I can remember (I lost mine.)....I think mine were more blue, but someone else may have a better thought. Thank you for sharing! Your beds are beautiful! I finally bought Regal Splendor last year after having it on the wishlist year after year...can't wait to see it furl out now! (Eyes are only just now popping up this week here.)

Ron, came across your post which I missed before...what a beautiful place you have. I am in the midst of planting shade companion plants, so appreciate your thoughts on light for the list you have. Hope you will keep posting pics! Oh, forgot...the potted hostas that you overwinter in the garage...do you have any special tricks for overwintering? I have done it 3-4 years now with about an 85% rate, but I'd like to improve on that because I do not like losing even one! I overwintered some out in our shed this last year instead of the garage, and the mice got into them and I lost a bunch. My biggest problems have to do with springtime moisture levels...I do not water them at all in the garage, come spring, I try to make sure at least 1/2 have broken dormancy before going outside. (Leave them in the garage too long, they dry out and die, water them in the garage, or take them out too early, they can rot.) Would love to hear how you handle yours. For this next year, I'm thinking about giving each small one an ice cube in Feb/March. Just to add some moisture back in as the weather warms up.

Luke is definitely a cutie, peren.all! Your garden looks great, as always! Nicholsworth (without the 55 part!)---now what can I change my name to---oldhostalady?---your compost factory is quite the process! Lots of work involved, but I believe it when you say that your plants are loving your compost! I have to say that I am envious with anyone whose hostas are now gone dormant! I am waiting for a freeze just so I can put my hosta containers away. It's cold and windy and I just don't enjoy the outdoors very much anymore. It's too cold for me! Now about Fragrant Blue, I remember a thread where forum members were discussing whether or not they could smell any fragrance from Fragrant Blue. I was surprised that many said that they could not. Mine does have a scent, but it is a light one. Nothing compared to something like Guacamole's stronger scent. Now doesn't that make it more confusing! In June: In August: In October:

Oh my gosh Kristy. Everything got so BIG since I saw it. Especially your patio is all covered in plants and hiding it. WONDERFUL. Everything looks really terrific. I love it. You have a safe trip and yes I hope you find some nice things you can bring back lol

Nice to see your place, Wow you sure can see by the brown lawn just how dry it is, even with watering you cant keep up with it. Saturday is more Thunderstorms here, I will try to send them your way :)

I love that gazebo I probaly already said that but every time I see it I say I LOVE THAT GAZEBO.

Everything has filled in just beautifully!!! Grass is over rated.. I say that with tears in my eyes... Mine looks the same and I love grass ..(NO Karyn not that kind...LOL) Just remember we will be getting rain eventually and some folks will be getting snow.. Can't believe it is already August!!!

Kristy, Your plumies look great. What do you fertilize them with? I just bought another one: Pudica Bridal veil the other day at HD.
I repotted one I bought a month or so ago and added milorganite, bonemeal, and black cow to the mix of sand, perlite, and potting soil..it was like night and day..it went from small yellow leaves to a huge green monster and has been blooming ever since lol. I guess they like that mix! Gonna repot the rest that way next.

Your princess flower looks really good now too!
I got another different type of princess flower that has huge round hairy leaves, I am still waiting for it to start blooming. I really like the foilage on it.

Snow whos getting snow?

Kristy ! What beautiful plants !! What is the one just under the picture of your gazebo ? It's in a tan pot. I am so jealous of your plummies ! All of mine are new, and I have yet to see one bloom :( , maybe next year. Have fun !! Edna

Edna, I htink the plant in the tan pot is called jacobenia, but I'm not 100% sure.

Yes its a jacobinia from Karyn. Brazilian plume flower. Thanks everyone. Gotta run to Moms and eat. Be back on later. Yes grass is crunchy, lol.

Lenette, I top dressed the pot with compost and time release fertilizer this spring and have been giving them the same weekly miracle grow or bloom booster as the brugs and once a month epsom salts. They are doing really good this year. They must have liked the conditions in the garage over the winter, lol. My sister's plants all look so good and one of her brugs I gave her is blooming. It has been raining most afternoons here and she waters too, lol. I am going to take out a loan and get a sprinkler system, lol. Just kidding I wish I could. I told her I wasn't even thinking about the yard being in the pics and that my grass was brown and crunchy and she laughed. Hubby has been trying to revive it and all he is doing is making mud and running up my water bill, lol. I think I will give up on it and try to reseed it later. It was already pretty weedy and this drought has done it in even with watering. THe whole neighborhood looks like that except the people who have an inground sprinkler system and my next door neighbor and his manual sprinklers run day and night no lie. He just moved them around every couple of hours, lol. Well I can't get to my nephews tomorrow to take cuttings. He is out of town and the gate is locked so hopefully I will score in New Orleans or I will have to take cuttings from the business landscaping and get arrested, lol. Lots of blooms going on everywhere in Baton Rouge.

Everything looks happy and healthy, Kristy. I am so jealous about your tibouchina; I've tried growing this about three times and it always dies on me, rats! Love your plumie and your squash.
