My Brug is not blooming!

My Angel's Trumpet is not blooming!! I live in central SC and we've had a very hot, dry summer with the occasional torrential downpours. I've kept it watered regularly though. I know it's suffered some leaf damage from rain coming off the house. I moved it to what I thought was a safer location but it still gets pounded when it rains. Could this be the problem? It's producing lots of leaves but I just don't see any signs of a bloom. I've been waiting all summer to see my blooms and this is so frustrating! Is it a lost cause now? Is there anything I can do?

Have you been using a bloom booster fertilizer? They need a high middle number to encourage blooming about once a week and plenty of water which it sounds like yours are getting. If you prefer organic fertilizer then just feed them more often.

Like Kristy said heavy feedings are a must for brugs. You mentioned "hot & dry" which might be part of the reason it's not blooming. Now that temps are cooling down you might begin to see buds. You'll want to stop fertilizing your plant about 4 weeks before your first heavy frost if it's inground. If it's a container plant stop feeding about 4 weeks before you take it in to go dormant. Honest, the secret is good planting soil that leads to good root systems that in turn leads to good growth above the soil. If you stop to think about the soil these grow in naturally, the mostly grow in the outer edges of treed areas and on valley floors, both of which are high nutrient areas from decaying/deposited plant/tree foliage. The roots are the plant's engine so good planting holes makes for good top growth. Also, those particular Brugs were 2nd year seedlings, the subsequent years after I cut those back to bring in for the winter, they never grew quite that tall again. I do not use Osmocote, I used a granular fertilizer in the planting holes that is 6-12-6 combination if I recall correctly, along with the mushroom compost. I also add grass clippings all summer long to the Brug gardens, and 12" of leaves in the fall but now I maybe only fertilize 2X's during the growing season. Remember too, I have been playing with Brugs and their needs for 10-12 years. :)

Fernzilla..I have been having this same problem. Last year they were just beautiful and did well with such a small amt of attention. I was actually expecting to spend most of my time pampering them, which would well be worth the effort to me. I really think it must be the extreme heat we had this year. No lack of water or TLC here. Have been just sick about it. I have this same plant..it was tagged but who knows where that tag might be now! Mine did not put on a show like this one..wow..I really might get the big head, as we say here in the South, if it did bloom like this one!

Hi everyone and thanks for any info in advance... This was my second season with Brugs in WV. I purchased them from a seed catalog with no variety ID, just pink, white, and yellow. They arrived in 2008 as 6-8 inch rooted plants, I potted them up and did virtually nothing...lol Needless to say, they did virtually nothing. I had one bloom on a 2 foot tall plant in november. I let them dry out and brought them in the house for the winter and watered sparingly. This past spring I put them outside in pots, when the weather warmed up and poured the water and miracle gow to them pretty religously. They took off well. I ened up with 5-6 foot tall plants, but they didn't start blooming until 2 weeks ago. I have battled wind (which broke the top out of my budded yellow), and now frost...I am am trying to eek my budded Brugs out until the buds all bloom out on my back porch, hanging bedsheets around them to keep off all frost ( and it has been doing fairly well so far). My question is this: If Brugs bloom after forming a Y, and my Y is at the top of the plant...hence my blooms being in the top 2 foot of the plant... when I cut my plants back, will the Y form where I cut them off at? I am hoping to have earlier bloom next year and not have to fret some much at losing all my bloom within a couple of weeks of them actually flowering. I plan on planting them in the ground next spring, instead of in pots, in hopes of getting earlier blooms, knowing that I will have to lift them come fall. Any info you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

Like...DUH!...I don't know why I didn't think about regular feeding! =:o My Brug is plunked in the middle of a garden full of elephant ears so bloom boosting just wasn't on my mind! It has been fed and I will keep it on a weekly schedule in the hopes that I will get to see blooms this year. Do you think there's still a chance? We don't usually have "cold" weather here until January.

BTW, my Brug is planted in the ground so what should I plan to do for it in preparation for winter to ensure good growth again in the spring? And, if I'm going to move it to a "safer" location in my garden, when is the best time to do that?

I think there's still a chance for your brug to flower. I'd cut it back before the first frost if you want to make cuttings or after if you don't. Give it a good layer of mulch and let it be. I don't know what the best time to relocate it would be because I can't keep mine in ground year round but probably the spring or maybe even now as long as there's enough time for it to establish a good root system but if moved now you can probably forget about blooms this season. Hopefully someone will answer that keeps their brugs inground year round.

Elephant ears suck up a lot of your nutrients I bet so you might have to feed it even more for it to get enough to bloom. Pour the fertilizer right around the base of your brug so it can get enough food. Water thoroughly first so the ee's can suck up their fill then follow with fertilizer.

oh man Kristy you said it! My EE's are taking more care and water almost then the brugs lol. But the second blossom is almost ready to open. It looks even more perfect then the first one and darker more like a light orange almost. Been taking pictures ;-)
