I suppose it depends on where you live and what you consider "tropical".

Loquat grows well. Just needs afternoon shade and occasional magnesium feeds. Guavas, White Sapote, and Mangoes do as well, but those three require intensive frost protection (lights, blankets, et al) to prevent them from freezing to the ground. The biggest problem with growing tropicals out here is the winter frost. If you can overcome that, you're in good shape.

Pruning Tropical Plant in an unTropical place

I ended up killing the Bougainvillea (California Gold) by pruning it too late and pruning it too harsh. I have learned my lesion since then and got another California Gold, and let it go free (no pruning near the frost season). I left the Night Blooming Jasmine too long and frosty got to her before I did and she became a history. I was sad because I never knew how beautiful she smelled. Anyway, I ended up getting a Arabian Tea Jasmine Plant a.k.a Maid of Orleans and oh my!! The smell will take your breath away! I will have to try everything to keep it alive!!! So no pruning before 2013 (week after the last frost day) Silver dollar Eucalyptus or gunnii: I have pruned those severely but they grew even vigor, so I plan to try leaving them outside (Georgia, what do you think? Some people kept them outside in Georgia, so worth the risk?) Eucalyptus Citriodora was pruned severely as well but I did leave a leafy branch for it to rely on. It has grown nearly 4 feet tall (Still in a pot). The places toward the base where I clipped, sort of transformed to round ball shape wood (looks kinda cool) -2 Olive (European) - Pruned all the new growth and this year it grew very well. I kept them in the pot (even though my initial plan was to let them field grow for thicker shape) . Both are doing very well. -1 Arbequina Olive - I pruned quite a bit and this year it grown quite a bit. I may just leave it alone this year since Olive usually grows on last years growth, so I might just see some olive if I leave it alone. -Feijoa .. since the variety I had was from eBay and no idea what type Feijoa they were, I decided to buy a NZ Graft from a reputable nursery and hopping my existing two can be pollinator for the new one. They all are field growing and I am debating weather to bring them in or leave them out. I have to think about potting while its still hot out there if I do that. Anybody growing Feijoa in 7b outside? I have gotten into more Tropical stuff (I've been just germinating seeds left and right (Mango, Jackfruit, guava and so on). I know they may not fruit or anything, but just trying it out.

How long do you think the miracle fruit fad will last? I am thinking not too long. I am sure there are tons of people right now growing up plants hoping to cash in. I would not be surprised to see them back to normal prices in about a year. I mean there are only so many people willing to pay the crazy prices for the miracle fruit plants. I don't think the mangosteen prices are a fad though. It's just so hard to find big plants. I will probably end up spending the cash on a grafted one eventually. I am just nervous about spending all that money only to have it die on me.

I woundn`t limit myself to N. CA if you are looking for tropical plants. Southern CA, FL, HI even Thailand can send you really a great selection of tropical plants that arrive quickly and in great condition.

Its true that you won`t get to see the actual plant you`ll be getting, but all the website have photos and detailed descriptions so you`re sure to see what the plants look like. Shipping costs are involved, but it`ll cost you plenty of gas money driving around N. CA looking for plants, too.

I`m always satisfied with the tropical plants I get from Aloha Tropicals, but there are several websites. Just type in "Tropical Plants for sale" into Dogpile.com or your favorite search engine and you`ll get plenty of sites.

Not sure where in "Northern Cal" you live (could be anywhere within a 500 mile range!), but at least in the Bay Area, you could check out:

Jurassic Palms (also have other tropicals)
Golden Gate Palms (ditto)
Copacabana Gardens 925-254-2303 (I think -- haven't called them in years) - special order stuff in the East Bay
Neon Palm Nursery in Santa Rosa - many other tropicals
But don't overlook Navlet's, Home Depot, and Orchard Supply Hardware, all of which carry standard tropicals (bougainvillea, hibiscus, bird of paradise, etc, the usual stuff).
Berkeley Hort - many unique plants, including tropicals.
Highland Nursery in Pittsburg - a real dive, but they have a lot of tropicals like coral tree, macadamia, etc.

Orchard Nusery in Walnut Creek has some good plants, and Annie's Annuals in Richmond also has some tropicals. I have heard that Berkeley Horticultural Nuserey is good.

I agree with Cagary. There are many online nurseries, and don't forget ebay, where you can get many plants that will never be available in Nor Cal. The real downside is the diminutive size of plants that will ship safely. Don't buy slow growers in a 4" pot if you are looking for instant gratification. I have bought many plants (30+) this way with only 2 shipping mishaps.You can check out online nurseries at dave's garden watch dog

I would also not limit yourself to nurseries. Botanical gardens usually have the best exotica at their plant sales. Strybing Arboretum, UCSC, UCB...they're all good...good prices, too.
