Protecting Nepeta Walker's Low from cats
Comments (9)Yup! When I put in my first Nepeta "Blue Wonder" a few years back, the neighborhood feral cat population soon reduced it to matted foliage and balls of fur (they really DO roll in it! ). . . The solution, suggested by a farmer in Vermont: place several jagged rocks (size of your fist or larger) at the base of the plant - no more cats rolling around! A second solution I stumbled on accidentally: use Nepeta as an underplanting for roses, the sharper their thorns the better - those plants have never been touched. And so any feline fanciers out there won't think me a complete ogre: last year I planted a little division of one my nepetas out by the compost pile - they had found and flattened it within days! But it's not in the garden, so everyone's happy. . ....See MoreFinally able to protect cats!
Comments (8)Poop and moisture are really not a problem. I keep a bottle of bleach outside in my work area and soak the used bags for a few minutes in a weak solution after I have shaken all the dry poop out. I rinse them well in clean water and they dry in minutes in the sun. The water from the sprinkler hits my many bags and it runs off almost like it was plastic. The cats have not suffered from it so far. As for the poop, I just untie the ribbon and give the bag a few little taps and the poop falls out without the cats having to leave their dinner. If the bag does seem to need changing, which they often do, I keep some clean bags with me and just put the cats in the new bag and attach it to a nice new branch with lots of leaves. I must say though that especially monarchs eat LOTS and FAST as they're getting large, so I separate them and put only one cat per bag - then I have to watch them carefully so I don't let them run out of food. I take them into the enclosure when they get large. The polydamas cats are a different story. There are SO MANY, and they eat SO MUCH that I couldn't keep up with them in bags. Now, I put them in the enclosure with lots of Aristolochia elegans clippings in an open plastic shoe box. It doesn't wilt before they eat it all up, even with it not being in water. If there are any blooms on the vine they especially love those! As they eat the clippings down, I put new clippings in a clean shoebox and just sort of lift the clippings that the cats are still feeding on in the old shoebox. I give them a little jiggle to remove any poop and put the whole shebang in the new box. As they mature they are allowed to crawl out of the shoebox and hunt their sweet spot to make their chrysalis. Comments (9)Hi there. I know you have come here for help and ideas. To be very honest cats will be cats and the only way to protect these babies (and all the others ones nesting that you dont see)is to keep the cats in the house. I know you are trying to help the strays too, please try to find them a no kill shelter or an organization that will spay/neuter and adopt them out. If you don't your neighborhood will be over run with cats. It's not the cats fault, just very bad cat owners that let them roam free. I love cats but I also love the birds, I have 4 cats, all rescued strays..and they do NOT go outside. Cats are not welcome on my property. Be aware this is a very hot topic, we understand you are trying to help but what I have said is the only sure way to protect wildlife of all kinds. Thanks for your concern....See MoreFlea/tick protection for cats
Comments (2)Well, I never used any chemicals on our cats, instead I put boric acid powder around the house in doorway and window tracks, rugs, under seating cushions, in backs of cabinets, behind furniture pieces and along baseboards. The salt gets on bugs, dehydrates and kills them as well as other bugs. When I use it, our house is completely bug free. It's the same stuff Flea Busters uses and it's 100% safe for animals but just to be on the safe side, avoid putting it in higher traffic areas. I should add too that I never let our cats outside, but if you have carpets and use the power on them, it will keep your cats flea free.
