Do you use Roundup? I had a container of Roundup that apparently they were attracted to and climbed in to..going up the spout I guess as when I emptied the container out, it was full of dead earwigs and floating in Roundup. I've googled Roundup and earwigs and can't find anything about it but I just did it just now and can take a picture of my ball jar, filled with Roundup and floating earwigs. Looks like there is a dozen of them. No other bug in there. I guess I'll contact the company. Perhaps you can make a Roundup trap for them, so they can climb in and get killed by it. The Roundup container had a tiny hole in the bottom and was dripping out slightly, so I got a ball jar and poured the Roundup in that. Now I am going to wash and dry bottom and put duct tape over tiny hole and pour this back in minus the earwigs because I hate to throw pesticide or herbicides away. We have enough deadly chemicals in our environment to be wasteful of it.

The people who feel earwigs are not damaging to roses are ignorant and uninformed. Just because they haven't 'seen' them doing their dirty deed doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It does-at night. They hide during the day. I just had to research,again, how to get rid of them, again, this year. They have proven so resistant to my efforts that I have pulled out 9 of 12 mature rose bushes just to minimize their creepiness. Using newspapers or cantaloupe or whatever cute little trick is advised would be a full time job for you. They are very prolific and if left unnoticed will take over your garden, depending on your climate. Females can lay 30 to 80 eggs over the winter. Multiply that by how many thousand already live in your soil...... One article on Wikipedia claims it is a myth regarding earwigs crawling into ears Not a myth. It happened to me and it took a lot of convincing to get my doctor to believe that the scab on my eardrum was from an earwig. He is now a believer. How to get rid of them? There are chemicals to spray but I've tried to avoid things like LambdaStar and anything coming from a chemical factory. To me those products are so damaging to the environment that I prefer to remove my rose bushes instead.. You might try "Safer Brand Ant and Crawling Insect Killer" which uses diatomaceous earth. Or spray insect soap containing a pyrethrum. Or sprinkle Borax around the border of rose bush stalks. Or do all 3. Good luck!

Yes it did, the compost pile is not 20 yards away, more like 10 yards and it now seems to be okay. However, I added a few other activities to solve the problem. 1) I ran all my branches and leaves through the chipper to break them down immediately. Previously I allowed a pile of brush to sit too long and the earwigs loved the dark area inside. No more storing that stuff until a more convenient time... 2) The compost pile needs to be turned over no less than once each week. This is to keep it cooking and I mix fresh yard clippings in with the old. This works well since chipping shrubs and branches produces a lot of browns and the lawn mower produces a lot of greens. Once I achieve a 50/50 balance, I start a new pile and keep turning the old one until it composts completely. Sometimes I'll spread partially composted material under garden plants as mulch. I like to get at least 2" depth if possible. 3) If I do see earwigs or even box elder bugs eyeing my garden plants, I sprinkle diatomaceous soil around critical areas immediately near the plants, not the compost pile. Don't over do it because this can injure beneficial bugs too, like earthworms. Good luck! Doug

Thanks. I also did notice another problem. There are lots of small ants in this tree. Not fire ants but perhaps Argentine ants? I know this can be a sign of other pests but strangely I can’t find any. Don’t see any aphids, scale, etc. But given the number of ants there must be some pest somewhere.
