Too much Too fast!!!

Most of you know my daughter is getting married in Oct (lol, I've talked about it enough). Well today my son got the call that he got the job promotion in *Baltimore Maryland*.... so I'm losing both my adult kids this fall within a month of each other. Yeah, I know gaining a son and all that stuff and he is a good guy, but........

Talk about an emotional mess!

::::sniff:::: ::::snort::::, ::::blow:::: I wanted an empty nest, even craved it, but sheesh, I was thinking my little birds would hop out on a branch for a time, let me get use to it before they both flew the coop completely!

Really, I'm thrilled for them both, but :::: wah::::, ::::gulp::::, ::::sniffle::::.

Having never raised anything with only two legs I cannot share in your pain, but I do imagine it is a drastic change and somewhat scary. It has the potential to open up whole new doors - grown kids living in exciting cities that aren't all that far away, etc. I know my parents were quite relieved to have fewer of us in the house and they quickly converted our bedrooms into sewing rooms and computer rooms (seemed almost instantaneous). On the plus side, having someone close to you live in the DC area is a big plus to me. An easy train ride north or a half day drive put you in one of my favorite touristy areas.

I too have had the same kind of feelings. At one point I and my 3 adult children all lived in different area codes. We moved to a smaller house when the last one left, but they came back anyway. LOL

On the 2 or 3 times a year I can see them all in the same room I just love to watch them, they are such good friends.
There are no words to make you feel better, it is stage all parents must go through. Keep us posted.

My understanding is that as long as the bermuda is completely dormant, you can use a nonselective herbicide to kill all the other weeds without harming the bermuda. If you're using an organic approach, that would be vinegar (preferably 20%). If you're using a chemical approach, that would be glyphosate (Round Up is the most well known brand name). Once the bermuda starts to green, you can no longer do this. It would certainly be less expensive for you to do this yourself than to hire it done. I don't know the answers to the mowing questions.

You do need to be patient with the worms early on. They seem to take a couple of months to ramp up to proper feeding (the bin needs to mature enough to transform the food waste into what the worms actually eat.) See the worms don't actually eat your food scraps, they eat the microbes that are decomposing the food scraps. Paper bedding does have the tendency to become matted. That is one reason I like shredded or ripped up corrugated cardboard as bedding, it tends not to matt or ball up the same way. Fluffing the bedding up occasionally is fine. Make sure bedding is only as moist as a wrung out sponge. It is ok if the top layer of shredded paper drys out a bit so long as the bedding under stays moist. A large chunk of cardboard, newspaper, or paper bag layed over the top of the bedding is often done. good luck and be patient. Here is a link that might be useful: My bins

this is a sticky subject that i think about too. i think its good to ask these questions, although i am used to having a very different opinion than others about these issues. although i like many native plants (and forage and spread them)- there are also many useful, feral, edible and medicinal plants that get stuck with the unwarranted label of "invasive", and then are removed with toxic herbicides. i have definitely seen examples of plants that are truly acting "invasive" and are opportunistically taking advantage of the imbalance of their ecosystems. BUT i think its important to factor in that their ecosystem are out of balance to begin with, which is closer to the real SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. I whole heartedly agree with anyone who knows that we need to repair our bioregions, and seeks to create sustainable INTACT ecosystems. But i disagree with what they see that as, and also think nature is far more resilient than people give it credit for being. That most ecosystems are HUMAN DOMINATED, is a major part of the problem, and the time scale for natures self healing process (which measures itself in eons!) is outside of our immediate scope. pointing the finger at the (so called) "invasives" only, and not seeing the larger picture somewhat misses the point, IMO. and especially if you consider once labelled "invasive" a LOT of toxic stuff gets poured on the ground in the effort of removing them. Also claiming that you alone, as a single small human creature, know what is best for nature, is a very slippery slope! no matter what kind of credentials or authority you may have.... also i get tired of researching plants and having to wade through all the "invasive" labelling and misunderstanding presented by those who just parrot the misinformation they are getting. there are many plants that do not deserve the label and treatment, and it gets more than a little absurd when the government tries to make a plant illegal, etc. i have also seen some manipulative tactics used by those, who go way overboard in stretching "truths" and perception about certain "non native plants".

Excellent, although we have a trickle going through the basement. It sits on a partially exposed granite slab, so I'm not hugely worried. I was just out planting some perennials during the lull and had to make a mad dash in. Now we are getting doused again. Oddly, in my raised beds in the back of my yard only the first 3 inches of soil were wet. The rest was still on the dry side. I'm hoping with the hurricane coming it will restore the balance of this summer's drought.

DC is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. There are some nice places far enough outside Baltimore, but the culture change from here going north a mere 200 miles is outrageous. I bet they will stay a while and look for a better opportunity back here very soon. Change is the only thing in our lives that is absolutely certain.

John, like most parents we've always had plans for their rooms when they left. Just didn't expect one of them to go so far. My son actually lived out (locally) for a few years before coming home to return to school. Now he's going to continue his schooling up there once he settles into his job. He'll probably have to do it online because he'll be traveling with his job a good bit. My daughter will still live nearby so I can hang with that, lol....

Jeane, had to chuckle at your smaller house story. We use to joke abt moving to a one bedroom cabin or houseboat.... Now I'm already making plans to go see him, cooking his fav foods before he goes, and sometimes just watching him or listening to his laugh. I will miss the sounds...

Brenda, it's just my son that's moving (daughter's getting married but staying local). I know that this is a great opportunity for him and he's worked hard to get here, so I am very proud of him and excited for him. He always wanted to live in NY, so this is right up his alley. He has boundless energy, he's very grounded in his personal faith and he has an incredible heart for people which has brought him to this place. He wants to live in the city (Baltimore) near the harbor so he can walk or bike to work and do his running near the harbor.

I guess a part of me knew this day was inevitable. All boasting aside, he's a special guy. I use to watch him and wonder how he turned out the way he did, cause my parenting skills certainly weren't all that, lol.
It was sweet the other day when he ask me what kind of veggies could he grow on his balcony. He's going to miss those fresh garden goodies! Not as much as we'll miss him though!

Aw digger..I feel for you. Sons are so special to their Mom's. They are the 'do it all' kids you can depend on (after a month of reminding). Best can be said is we now live in the age of email so you won't lose touch. You won't get to see (and approve) of who he's dating (course, that's one less worry for you) and he won't be handy but now you get to notice how he appreciates you and all Mom has done (when he faces a room sized stack of laundry..Ha!)

Now, holidays will be extra special when he comes home.
