Moving to Asheville, wanted to say hello

Hi All,

Just wanted to say hi. My hubs and I will be moving to the Asheville area either this summer or early fall from the Chicago area, so I thought I would start checking out this board.

Anyone else live in that area? We just listed our house and are planning a two-week visit in early June, hoping to do a little house hunting and job hunting for me.

Anyhow, I'm a gardening fanatic and looking forward to a longer season and a warmer winter!!

Hi JC and Welcome to the Carolina board. I love Ashville, but am about 3 hours east of it. My son visits friends there and we travel through on the way to TN to visit family. I also have a sis north of there. Beautiful area with plenty of cultural type stuff, but also a very laid back lifestyle! They have a great Farmer's Market/Nursery on I-40 there for you to check out when you get the chance. There's also a Arboretum up there that is famous for their bonsai. If you haven't already you might want to subscribe to one of the local papers (you can also check out their newspapers online). It will help to familiarize yourself with the area. You will love the growing season. We moved from Normal, Il to just north of Charlotte. This winter we didn't have much winter at all. NC is a great place with so much diversity and great people. Welcome. Nancy

Welcome aboard Jeana. I was certain I had posted to this thread but didn't see it yesterday or this morning. So not sure if the GW gnomes ate it, I forgot to submit it or Dawn removed it as I'm sure I had some warning in it about her being an enabler and being our "Elite Gardener. Or maybe as I''m waiting on new glasses that are late arriving I may of overlooked it. I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. You will be blessed with his memories everytime you read his notes and go out to garden. I got my love of gardening from my Mother. She is failing now and can't do much but still has beautiful flowers every year. I'm one of the lap landers mentioned earlier in the thread. Sleep next to the state line and like a tumble week blow back and forth. I agree Ilene Dawn should write a book and you need a chapter on gardening fashions in it. All terrain crocs, bee costumes and whatever the new the fad might be. Diane mentioned the enormous brains and stores of knowledge. I just have an enormous inventory of seeds and have no clue why. LOL. Keep asking the questions. The only bad one is the one not asked. Wishing you a great gardening year in 2010. Jay .

Hi there, and welcome. Congratulations on both your new married life and getting started on your new home. Be sure to check out the kitchen and bath forums too for lots of great advice over there, and don't be shy about asking questions and looking at the galleries of past projects. People love to 'show off' their completed projects and help with new ones around here. Gardening is my love too and I've learned by doing and made many mistakes along the way - comes with the territory I have discovered.

Caligal, it really sounds like you want to stay with your current home. However, I'll just point out that right now the inventory of foreclosed homes gives people unprecedented chances to obtain homes they could not hope to have before and many will not be able to afford in future (let's hope no more such "wonderful" home markets). I don't mean go looking just for a bigger home (although in your case some additional size would be nice), but rather a lifestyle improvement: A decent home in a location that is particularly desirable to you. You know, location, location, location. Things like good schools, a pretty sociable neighborhood, close to family, en route between friends and mall (they'll be dropping in), favorite amenities close by (cows in pastures or high-density shopping, your choice), good proximity and transportion to work. Whatever floats your boat. If you're not already in a place you'd really like to raise your children and even be happy growing old, this current opportunity to make your home there should not be passed up for any but the most important reasons.

Ruthanna and others, thank you for the welcome... Let me just add... regarding my doctrine and belief, I have never tried to convert anyone away from their own brand of doctrine... I will however try to answer those that email or pm me with questions regarding my beliefs.. and have done so many many many times.... I will always follow up and pray for those that ask.. openly and boldly.. but to try to ask a wiccan to become baptist.. nope.. not who I am or what I am about.. With elevation, comes a whole nuther climate than what folks expect in the South. If you settle in Asheville and get frostbit, you can drive east a few hours and thaw out in Charlotte (giggle)

Welcome to NC. I am from South Bend, IN. I now live about 30-40 min east of Asheville in a small town in McDowell COunty called Marion. MUCH cheaper than Buncombe County!
