I have M. aurantiacus that I have grown from seed collected in the San Joaquin River Gorge area, as well from the Pacheco Pass area and they both will flower all summer long as long as they have moisture. The same goes for the other "garden center" hybrids I have.

According to attached article, there are two different type of Monkey Flowers. There are ones that grow in wet condition and another type that grows in rock garden types. I was trying to get one that works well in a container in the shade.

There are actually many more different types of monkey flowers that are native to California and even areas of Chile in South America. These are the types I am growing:

M. Aurantiacus var. aurantiacus - plants from seed collected in areas where they are dormant in the summer (Pacheco Pass near Los Banos, and the San Joaquin River Gorge near Auberry.) These bloom all summer if I water them. They will stop blooming if I let them go dry.

Mimulus guttatus - plants from seed collected in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Daulton. These will die if left to dry in the summer, but will bloom all summer long if I water them.

Mimulus cardinalis - plants from seed collected along the shore of Bass Lake near Oakhurst. This is a riprarian species so it is less drought tolerant than other mimulus. I keep it watered in the summer and blooms all summer as well.

All of these have worked well for me in the shade. The aurantiacus I have found in the wild are typically shaded part or most of the day, as well as the cardinalis, which prefers shady, wet conditions. M. guttatus is more of an annual and will prefer full sun. Any of these would do well in a container, in my opinion.
