Is anybody out there??

I have really missed the conversations in this forum...I felt akin to all of you still waiting for sprouts. I think my first sprouts finally came in around April 28th. I now have poppy, lettuce, TOMATOES (I really didn't think they would germinate), broccoli and lupine. there is still a lot that don't have any sprouts at all; but my indoor sown seedlings are looking good.

I hope you all finally had success w/ WS this year. This is my first year and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. :D

Hi Pam,I have lupines, hollyhocks, snapdragons,Cherokee Sunsets and dahlias doing just fine. Isn't it fun? M

I was wondering the same thing, but I guess we are all out in our gardens. I have so much weeding to do, new beds to make, perennials to move around, and I have to water my seedlings almost every day. I did lots this year and have not had any success with Astilbe, Sweet peas, or Columbines again this year. I may break down and buy some at the nursery this year. I found a Nelly Moser Clematis on sale at Canadian Tire last week and bought it. I had sown some seeds, but they are reported to be difficult to grow from seed and also time consuming. So that's where we are!

been here too. Lurking.. (smile)..not a lot to tell. Been working on my landscape.. seems like ages, the wind is brutal today, my neighbors tiles are blowing off his roof. and I just put some plants out. Any suggestions for plants that can handle the wind? Got some great natives from John... (thanks John).. sny sugestions for cutting flowers, or lei plants? Anyone know where I can find the red bleeding heart?

Congrats on adding more blue to the sky! Hopefully, you will see many more fledgings. Sometimes they fly out so quickly, you blink and miss it. Other times, the parents tease them for hours, call them, and hover in front of them with food to coax them out. The funniest one I ever saw (wish I had a picture of this) one fledgling changed his mind in mid-fledge; one wing and one foot out, and one wing and foot still in the box. He must have stayed there a good 20 minutes trying to figure out what to do next. He eventually made it just fine, heaven knows how. Sometimes they are super flyers, popping out and turning in mid air to head right up to the tallest trees. Landing is another matter. I've seen one grab a bunch of leaves and hang upside down for a while, holding on for dear life until he gathered the nerve to fly up higher. They can climb very well, too. It always amazes me how the parents will guide them from one place to the next, and then gather them all up for the night, all snuggled together in a row. I used to think they always fledged first thing in the morning, but I've seen them fledge all times of the day, just before a major thunderstorm, even once at dusk. The most important thing though, is NOT to scare them when fledging time is close. The last thing you want is for them to fledge out of fear before they are really ready. Always keep good notes on your calendar so you know when the age of the nestlings, and do not open the nestbox after day 13 (remember unlucky 13). Here we go again... You don't plant bare root citrus in the sort of climates I'm accustomed with, period. It can take the plant up to 2 years to recover and then only under intensive care. I know because I've been there, out of necessity, but that's no way to treat a citrus plant if there's no good reason for it. So the info provided by your beloved author, who advocates barerooting and root pruning all woody plants, is plainly and undisputably wrong in this case. In my climate you don't really plant any non-decidous tree or shrub bare root because the chance of failure is greater than the chance of having root problems due to a plant being pot bound.. To avoid root problems you just buy the plants in a container appropriate for their size and age from a nursery where they know what they're doing. Citrus plants destined for commercial planting are pot or bag grown in soil based potting substrata rather than peat where I live, which helps (but even peat is better than clay), but anything is better than barerooting them, not to mention messing with their roots. I could make a long list of plants that cannot really tolerate being barerooted but I can't be bothered since you are obviously religious about this. The rest, about amending, is only obliquely relevant but, of course, it is your pet subject in these forums which you bring up given half a chance, and it has been for more years than I care to know. Thanks for the link Bonnie. :) I enjoyed re reading it. We rented a cabin for a week by a man made lake in central BC near Lumby. It was named Cozy Cabins and it was big enough for the 8 of us. Still was quite cozy though. We enjoyed the lake and the complementary row boats. We wore our life jackets when we went rowing in solidarity with the kids who all had to wear theirs. :). There are trails for hikers of all abilities. My in laws came back with sore calves when they took a steep mountain trail that they weren't expecting. :) I can't hike in dry heat as it causes me to have an aural migraine. Not conducive to finding my way back to the cabin. Only one bathroom and no internet except in one spot on the grounds made it feel more rustic. I enjoyed the change from always being hooked online. No one else seemed to miss the web either. :). Not even the 20 and 30 somethings. If we go again we'll rent 2 cabins right by the lake is the general consensus. 2 cabins equals 2 bathrooms. :) (We all said a 2nd bathroom wouldn't hurt.)

Good Morning Pam,

I think we're all out there somewhere in the green stuff! :O)

I'm having great success this year as well. So far I'm excited about all the Butterfly Bushes which have germinated as well as the Butterfly Weed. Can you tell I'm going for Monarchs?

I have a few which will be ready for the gardens this weekend. The Bachelor Buttons are bursting out of their pots, and I've got to get them out.

A bit overwhemled - so much still to do to prep the gardens.

I'm here but only usually after the sun goes down...been edging gardens, watering seedlings, seeding and feeding the lawn and anything else I can do outside.
I've got a bunch of seedlings ready to plant and lots still sprouting. Lots of poppies, sweet peas, morning glories, nasties, geez there's so many I just can't think..I think my brain got fried today! LOL.
Anyhow, still plenty of work to do...it's all fun I think though!!
Hope everyone else is having fun too!

When I'm not at work I have my eyes stuck to the tops of all the pop and milk containers in the back yard!!! First year W/S and so far it is working great!!!

Astilbe, Lupins, Prairie Sun and Cherokee Sunset Rudbeckia, Dusty Miller, Nicotiana, Gazania, Viola, Lobelia, Pansy, Malva (only two sprouts so trying another container), Heliotrope - all have green stuff coming up!! Have some others that haven't decided what they're doing yet but my fingers and toes are crossed!! We are supposed to hit 31 today - yikes! - so was out there this morning letting some air into my babies. Don't want to come home to - gasp!! - cooked greens for dinner!

Oh that's funny, I also bought a Nelly Moser Clematis on sale at Canadian Tire :) I've been mostly outside as well, with the shovel, compost and bags of peat moss, getting everything ready to plant in.

I had some sprouts - Columbines, Hollyhocks, Dianthus, Centaurea, Malva, various Poppies. The hollyhocks that I collected seed from my garden have come up fine. Hollyhocks that I received in trades from others haven't come up at all . . . which is the majority of the HHs that I sowed. It was a little disappointing and I've yet to figure out why. They were all in the same area, so maybe something about lack of water, or sunlight or something. Still, disappointing. There were some interesting ones.

Annuals are still coming up, so I guess there is still some time to see if anything else will poke it's head up.

Where did everybody go??
