Native Datura Wrightii pics

Heres the native Datura Wrightii blooming, it came up last year and i hacked it back in the fall, then here it is now. I missed the first bloom, but these are just as nice. The following are some Mirabilis Jalapa, Bougainvillea Buttiana, and a Tillisandia Juncea that i recently mounted on the tree fern.

This Datura is the largest native wildflower here in the U.S.,just in case you wanted to know......

I see datura growing wild from time to time. I was wondering if I could dig one up (not off a highway, off course)and plant it in my hillside garden. Would cuttings or seed work? How do you collect seed?

Karyn, that one does look like the one i have. The one i have is a Bougainvillea x Buttiana, but i don't know the name also. Yours looks more compact, maybe because it is in a container? About the tree fern, Blechnum Gibbum (Drawf black tree fern) is a nice specimen to grow in pots. Its growth isn't stunted from being pot bound, while most of the larger tree ferns are. If you are willing to take a challenge, i have some fresh spores from my own Australian tree fern. I collected them yesterday. I've never tried growing them myself, but apperently they aren't easy. Regardless, this is the main method of propagation for this tree fern, so it is do-able. send me your address and i can get those out to you. my email is central_cali369@yahoo.com Here is a pic of my own blechnum gibbum. Sjn, wow, your parrot got hold of the seeds? I'd be terrified..What type of parrot do u have? I might have asked before...I've 6 cockatiels..Sparkle, my male's son, gets into everything..lol..he's such a sneak.. He's the only one who gives me trouble when it's time for them to get to bed..that little sneak flew in the kitchen the other night, flew up on the cabinet, stoooped down, and tried hiding from me..LOL..I saw his crest and little eyes peeking out..it took a while, but I got him down..had to turn off all the lights, grabbed him, then brought him to his cage..he was sooo funny..Anyway, I'd panic if one of my tiels ate a brug or datura. I watched a show on birds on the Nature Channel..channel 11..the show was about macaws who ate poisonous seeds, then would fly to a huge clay hill..they'd eat the clay so toxins from the poisonous plant seed digested..then pooped out. It was quite interesting..wish I could recall which plant seed they ate.. I don't know how to describe datura leaves..they smell sour..think that's the best I can do.. Beth, your datura sounds beautiful..double flowers..Yes, I'd love seeing a pic of your plant..I've never opened the seeds before, just left them on the ground, which is probably how they sprouted..well, guess ants can eat this plant too, if they're living in the seed..It's amazing. What a difference between your growth in Fl and ours in IL..Your plants already have seed, while ours haven't even flowered..Toni

Thanks for the info! I guess they like some neglect. I will be crossing my fingers with these seeds that I already sowed, and will be sowing the remainder in the ground as soon as it's warm enough. Beachplant, wow! 8' tall?! that's amazing. I believe your area (coastal) stays free of frost, as opposed to mine, which is frost prone in the winter. Some years it's less, and some years it's more. My bougainvilleas remain evergreen some years, and some years, they lose all of their leaves (like this year ). Last year, my bougies were in full bloom at Christmas time, not so this year :( Wickedwitch, you are right! it's nice to be able to write down your thoughts. I would like a link to your blog, that way I could follow you if that's ok. Karyn, is it possible to grow them in containers? I have some wine-barrel halves with an Octopus Agave in each, and also some containers with Yucca Guatemalensis. They would look amazing with daturas filling in and hanging over the edges. Josh

ltecato, i've never tried propagating these, but i know that Brugmansias, which are very closely related to Daturas, are extremely easy to grow from cuttings. It could be worth a try. I would think though, that seeds would be the main source of this plant. The one i have just grew there all by itself, i didn't plant it. It is currently swelling up some seed pods though.

Datura is larger than Matilija Poppy?

The Daturas I've seen around here weren't.

I did see one that had a distinct lavender color. It was quite lovely. I haven't planted any because I had small children around and I was afraid of them putting it in their mouths. Now they're bigger and they know better.

I might try to find some of that lavender one.

Mine isn't blooming yet, but it sure is putting out a lot of new growth. I can't believe how great these look when neglected! They remind me of something out of the dinosaur age...or Petunias on steroids. :D

Jimson Weed. Daturas. Beautiful but extremely poisonous. Too bad.

Datura is shorter than Matilija Poppy, and branching, so it can be a large area plant.... if it likes where it's living.

You might try looking for an existing plant later in the summer when the golfball-sized, very prickly seed-pods are ripe, cut one off, break it open and plant the seeds. I've moved very small plants successfully. The plants are perennial. I think they are the best free-bee around... a handsome, drought tolerant, continuously blooming, native wild flower.

Thanks for the info, Westelle. I kind of suspected they might be perennial but wasn't sure because they seem to disappear from time to time.
