Have you ever bought/not bought a brug because of the name?

I saw a topic like this on th hosta forum, so I am applying it to brugs here. Have you ever bought a brug just because you like the name or not bought one because you hate the name?

I am not really into brug names that are a person's first and last name, but I don't mind when it is just a first name for some reason. For example, I don't care for Charles Grimaldi. I had one and it died, bit I don't really care to replace it just because I don't likr the name.

There are a few that I really like the names of, but I haven't bought any just for the name. I like names like 'Mountain Magic' and 'Fascination'.

I'll admit I prefer Brug names that are descriptive of the bloom. But I don't mind varieties that are named after special people. Such as Luise, which I believe Monika Gottschalk named after her mother. It's definitely on my wish list.

I do like when folks get creative or playful with brug names.

Except for my next-to-the-last order, everything's been excellent. The newest leaf on a Phal from Hausermann's was torn in half by another leaf that was bent the wrong way during packing. Additionally, the plant didn't look very healthy. I sent an email, along with several clear pix, asking what their policy was for a torn leaf. After a few days, I left a voice message. Never heard from them. That said, these vendors have been exceptional: Andy's Big Leaf Carter & Holmes Exotic Orchids of Maui J & L Komodo New World Parkside Pine Ridge Seagrove Sunset van Bourgondien for Habenaria radiata & a houseplant (Dutchbulbs.com)

I was just on Garden Value Outlet, and clicked on a few. Apparently their bulbs come from Ednie Bulb Company which is five miles from me, but they're wholesale and don't sell to the public unless it's the end of the season when they put them down by the road. That website wipes out your shopping cart if it's inactive for 20 mins. So I'm back at not having ordered yet. Amaryllis.com has Cybisters, but they're $15 each plus $9.95 for shipping for the three they have (Emerald, Ruby Meyer, and Lima. Sheepers is $4.95 (for NJ) shipping with a minimum of a $35 order, but they don't have Lima. Guess I'll order from them.

I think it depends on what the item/items are. I have a friend who has a historic home and has done very well with ebay w/o a wild frenzy of internet searching. In keeping with the mindset of the previous poster, If it's something which is made for bulk purchases(as many foreign items are)consider the item could be a lesser quality than expected. Contact the buyer thru ebay 'channels ' and find out as much as you can. Ask for optional pictures, more details, weight, etc. Nuts and bolts are one thing,but a particuliar item you have your heart set on is an animal of a different color. Caveat emptor.

I print an average of 500 to 1000 photos a month so you can be sure I use a lot of ink and I am extremely critical of the print quality. I have a very expensive HP photo printer and when I tried the refurbished ink not only was the output quality terrible, the danged cartridge leaked in the printer and it took me a whole day to take the printer apart and clean that mess, I have used refilled cartridges in my cheaper HP, but that is only used for text documents because at best, it will never be a photo printer. Jan has a Lexmark printer and even with new Lexmark OEM catridges the output quality sucks... When I moved from Ohio to Massachusetts two years ago I inadvertantly left my good HP photo printer behind. When I discovered the problem I called my sister and made arraingement to have it shipped to me, but knowing how my sister procrastinates, I knew that would take at least a month and I had 400 or 500 photos that I wanted to print immediately. Now I could have put 50 or 100 on a flash drive and went to Walmart of one of them places to have them printed, but that seemed like a lot of messing around so Jan suggested I might buy another printer, perhaps not an expensive one, but one that would do a fair job of printing photos till my good machine arrived, so off to Staples we went. While looking at the new printers I also noted what ink cartridges they used and checked the ink price.. After looking at about 25 different printers I came to the conclusion that to get a printer capable of doing a fair job of printing photos it would cost $300 and up, not to mention that most of them use a special cartridge for printing photos which is priced out of sight. As we were leaving the store one of the floor clerks was arrainging a display in the isle of Kodak printers. As I read the specs it said the Kodak ESP 7250 was listed as a photo printer and Kodak advertises to have the cheapest ink in the industry. At first I thought cheap ink would mean the prints would probably fade in a short time, but as I read on Kodak says their ink is archive quality and will not fade, yea, right, I thought, and while I was standing there reading the specs the guy put a big sign up with the price. Can this be right? $99 for the hard wired version or $119 for the wireless model and the Staples price for the color & black ink cartrides was $21, a mere fraction of what Jan was paying for her Lexmark cartridges. Then I thought to myself, Kodak built their entire reputation in the photography business, would they advertise a printer as a photo printer if it didn't do a good job on photos? I was standing there debating whether I was going to buy it and finally Jan says, "why don't you try it, if it don't work like you want, I'll give you the money and hook it on my computer and get rid of the Lexmark" I bought it and ran home to try it. Hookup was about 5 minutes including loading the software, then I selected a photo from my files and hit print,,,I heard the paper load but then nothing,,what the heck..it don't work? About 10 seonds later my finished print popped out. This printer is so quiet I literally don't hear it printing, even though its only 3' away. I grabbed the print and looked at it with my critical eye, and boy was I amazed. That print looked better than any print I ever had printed at Walmart. I have now had this printer nearly 18 months and I could not begin to tell you how many hundreds upon hundreds of photos I have printed with it, and the quality right now is every bit as good as it was day one. I knew what the ink prices were at Staples and Walmart so out of curiosity I decided to check Ebay to see if I could save any money...all I can say is ...WOW I bought a two pack of the Genuine Kodak color cartrides for $12.95 and a two pack of the Kodak Black cartridges for $12.95 and all with free S&H. A couple months later I decided I might try the kodak remanufactured cartriges that at listed on Ebay. A two pack of the color for $12.95 and a two pack of the black for $9.04, again with free S&H and to tell the truth, I can not see any difference between the OEM's and the refurbished cartridges in output quality. One cavate though, For best results you have to use genuine Kodak photo paper, because Kodak prints a bar code on the back of the photo paper that tells the printer what the quality and finish of the paper is, and it adjusts the ink automatically not matter if I am print on Matt finish, gloss finish or Ultra gloss finish, but then, at Walmart the genuine Kodak paper is only $1 more than the HP photo paper. Now in regards to whether the photos fade. I have about 200 photos on the wall in our living room, most of which receive full sunlight during the day, yet in nearly 18 months we have not noticed even the slightest change in appearance.

I buy because I like the brug. I might be more apt to look one up because of a name but I wouldn't buy or not buy it based on the name. Now I have bought other plants mainly because of the name but if I didn't like the plant I wouldn't but it based on the name only.

I bought Andrew's Gold because of my DH's first name. And would you know it, I fell in love with this brug!

One day I hope to have Volkie, that would be for his german given name when he was little.

But that is about it. I would buy because of looks. I know, that is shallow lol. But at the same time look for angels that love it here in Texas and are more virus resistant.

However i have Purchase Some Hibiscus
In the past and when they Arrive i said
Unto Them---The Hibiscus-- Thou Name
Shall Be Called Such Such From This Day
Forth.

It Arrive i Change the name of It.

Cho lol thanks for the laugh..:) I traded for becca lyn for my niece... It was the only one too that didnt make it this winter..Boo hoo I do like names though...I bought a sedum it is called "chubby fingers" lol hahahha

One of my pet peeves is the attempted cuteness from a deliberate misspelling. i.e. luv for love

I would buy a brug with a name I disliked, like CB, but I call it something different. All my plants have names.

When they don't come with name I make some up. The white brugs I got cutting from on Sansbury Ave are call Sansbury white 1 and sansbury white 2.

I do like the notion of plants named after someone. My father in law is an orchid grower. He grew a new, unnamed orchid and won at an orchid show with it. One of the benefits of being the first to win at an orchid show with an unnamed orchid, is getting the chance to name it. He named it Elizabeth after his wife. She is gone, but her orchid lives on.

I am hoping to get Charleston (one of many misspellings of my last name Charlton) & Naughty Nick (son-in-law who finally married DD after 2 kids). I have a dream of growing out seedlings & getting something special enough to name after my DH & kids (8 kids so I have big dreams). Axl Rose (variegated) is a strange name for a Brug & appears to have nothing to do with the band (Brugs, drugs maybe???). LOL

haha, that's a good question. honestly, I'm irritated by a lot of names, LOL. especially ones that are obviously referencing "ladies of the night" so to speak (painted lady, harlot, new orleans lady... you know what I mean. I get the joke, hurr. but really, just... no.). and flag-waving GO AMERICA names like "american pride," are obnoxious too, lol. and "wild thang"... I don't know, names that imply an accent irritate me (I know, I know, "but the song!" yeah, it still irritates me). oh oh, AND I have a pet peeve about spelling, and "phanomenal" practically makes me twitch every time I read it :P

I might just be a jerk, though :P and also if I like the look of the brug enough, I might be able to look past its unfortunate designation :P but as it is, for all of the different "types," so to speak, I tend to try to pick _one_ that best represents that particular type (i.e. one double pink, one single white with really nice tendrils, etc.) instead of a bunch of extremely similar ones, and I thusly keep my collection on the small side. and I can avoid the really annoying names in the process, LOL.

I'm not sure, but I think phanomenal is a german word. The german equivalent of phenomenal. Is it not a german hybrid?

I only know this because the spelling annoyed me too until it was pointed out by my german speaking friend that my xenophobia was about to break through - that everything is NOT English. lol

Hehe, yeah, that spelling of phanomenal got to me too, until I realized it was the German spelling. Still do a double take every time I see it, but I'm getting over it slowly. ;-) When I first bought it, I just assumed Eddie was a horrible speller. Sorry Eddie!

The reason the phanomenal is giving you all such a hard time is because the German way is spelled phÃ¤nomenal. Meaning unbelievable, outstanding, fabulous, and of course.... :phenomenal lol

I have so many seedlings I like to find out WHAT THEIR names are....before I call them brainless Lucy 1...forgeful Lucy 2....confused Lucy 3...and so on lol

Karyn I cheated. rofl I copied and pasted it out of a translator ha ha ha I USED to know the number combination LONG time ago. Then until recently I had the german keyboard with them on it. Now I just write everything the ae oe ue way lol OR copy and paste :-)))))))

btw - hold the windows key and hit R, then type "charmap" without the quotes and hit enter.

I don't pay much attention to the brug names. I go by what they look like. The only one I looked at because of the name was 'Puppy Love', but I didn't buy it.

Peony & Ria, That annoys me too. I named my son's band after seeing "andaconda" spray painted on a building. I said oh look, ILLITERATE GRAFFITI & DH said what a great name for a band & the kids loved it.

A friend's DD graduated this year & sent us a home-printed invitation. YOUR invited. What is she going to college for? To be a teacher! Scary! LOL
