Have you bought Lowes / HDepot type brand name from ebay?

Im very familiar with buying / selling on ebay but never for something that becomes part of the building of a house.

Whats been your experience buying a well-known brand item that is available from Lowes, HDepot or reputable websites when you bought it instead thru ebay?

Any suggestions, thoughts on why you would or precautions/ concerns why you wouldnt?

Chinese crap from big box stores isn't improved by being part of a bulk returns package that a reseller buys.

I think it depends on what the item/items are. I have a friend who has a historic home and has done very well with ebay w/o a wild frenzy of internet searching.

In keeping with the mindset of the previous poster, If it's something which is made for bulk purchases(as many foreign items are)consider the item could be a lesser quality than expected. Contact the buyer thru ebay 'channels ' and find out as much as you can. Ask for optional pictures, more details, weight, etc. Nuts and bolts are one thing,but a particuliar item you have your heart set on is an animal of a different color. Caveat emptor.

Second shipment from Carmela arrived, still no word from C&H. This time I ordered 4 x 3 compots plus one 25 plug tray. (Go to the eBay page described earlier to get the details) Total $128 less 15% comes to $109 plus $25 shipping for a total of aprox $130. I unpotted one of the compots and got 15 large seedling plants, almost the size of the plug plants plus 18 small plantlets which will go back into a new compot. Assuming the rest of the compots will yield 30 plants each, we are talking of a potential of 360 compot plants 1/2 of which are 1 year behind the rest and 25 plug plants which are 1 year ahead of the larger compot plants. Thats a best case scenario of 385 plants blooming spread over a 3 year period for $130. That's about 30 cents a plant, realistically 40 cents as some are runts and may not make it. I like this better than the flasking scene. The plants are well established with roots and acclimatised to the real world at the same or better price than flask plants which would be 1 year behind, besides being so delicate. As Borat would say "Great success" if for no other reason that this will keep me busy for quite a while potting up and caring for all these plants. Further more, the empty bench space will be occupied, having empty bench space is one of the cardinal sins of orchid growing and must not be tolerated under any circumstances. Nick

Okay, I hope I can answer most of these question. As many of you may or may not know, the Princeton Elm was choosen for its landscape characteristics back in 1920, before DED even hit US soil. Now 88 years forward and 100 million elms dead, the Princeton is still growing and able to fit a new void in the plant pallet of an upright vase shape, arching canopy shade tree. Now there are several trees that are DED resistant, but non have the landscape qualities, rate of growth and color of the Princeton. That is why the National Park system chose it for planting in front of the White House and many city and state governments are choosing the Princeton as the tree of choice. Now lets look at some of those questions. 1. Heat tollerant? The Princeton Elm has been sent as far south as Orlando Florida as I have read. 2. Home Depot? My understanding is that they do not carry the tree anymore, seem like the last time a couple of weeks ago I was in a HD, they did not have any trees. New leadership and market conditions I bet. I think I heard that Garden Centers would start handling the trees now. 3. Leaf Scorch? I have some here in Georgia and they do not seem to be affected by Leaf Scorch. 4. Japanese Beetles. Yes, they will eat on the leaves, but the tree grows 3' to 6' in one season, so the beetles are only affecting the look, not the health of the tree. 5. caliche soil (alkaline soil)- Research done on the Princeton has indicated it grows in a very very wide ranges of soils until you get into desert/sand type of conditions. Zone 2b to 9 make it one of the most widely ranging trees in North America. The soils in these regions vary widely, so I dont think it would have a problem. Give it a try and report back to us. Virgo, I love your Varigated Ploy Chum Phu!! Looks like its doing well and it certainly is a Varigated... :-) Some friends have talked about Bkinterpants and they have had some good and some so-so experiences. I haven't bought anything from them, but I do hear some say they are alright. I also have some trees purchased from dealers here in the U.S. that have bought from Thai dealers. They come grafted and with very dry roots. I hold my breath when I get them started and potted up but I also treat them like they are cuttings and give them the same care to get those roots/ new roots growing. I also have purchased from BBB and have had good experiences with him as well.. Kukaits trees are simply beautiful!! Congratulations on your Marble Ice Cream!! I'm sure you are thrilled about that one ! I have a Thai Variegated Ametrine that I'm in the process of getting started and I have a few Maya's from a friend who purchased them from a Thai dealer. Ok, three of my favorite voices around here--Palimpsest, Ideefixe and Oakleyok--have pretty well covered all the bases, but just to recap... The three biggest causes of Decorating Remorse--other than watching TV decorating shows & wishing you had done something other than what you already did, I mean--are Being in too big a hurry & buying something just to have something (rather than have nothing), Worrying about inconsequential stylistic labels & categories, and Buying brand new pieces. I did without a sofa for five years rather than buy something merely to be have something to sit on, I don't worry about what style supposedly goes with what, and I never buy anything new. Well, almost never. The most expensive thing in my house is an early 19th century sofa, for which I forked over 850 of my hard-earned dollars, and the two-months-long diet of peanut-butter sandwiches that paid for it was worth every bite. The second-most-expensive thing I ever bought was also the only thing I've ever bought new: a gigantic 3-piece arched mirror set out of a popular catalog that looked very handsome in the photo but which turned out to be a piece--well, three pieces--of junk, which I should have predicted, since, Hello!, it was in a popular catalog. All I can say is I must have been on Nyquil that day. Anyway, I seldom make mistakes, but when I do, I don't brood & beat myself up over them, so I hauled them down to the service entrance lobby of my building and in a few hours, they were gone. The sofa I'll have forever.

I was not clear, sorry - I revised my initial post

Im speaking of a known brand item youve already decided on and are comfortable buying ---- same item, brand, model, but from ebay and of course a seller with a decent rating.

I was lucky to get a brand name faucet (Kohler) from ebay. It was a personal auction, not a 'store'. I saved a few hundred dollars from the special order Lowes price. It was new, in the original box. The seller was selling it because they changed their mind about the finish.

Is this what you mean? Or are you wondering what would happen if this faucet developes a problem?

That is what I mean maddie.

We bought a $170 Pfister faucet from HD, need second one for prep sink and see theyve been selling quite frequently on ebay and around $90-100.

i would double check to Be sure the model numbers and finish is the same as the one you are considering. And that all parts and hoses are included

Also check out the Pfister website to see what kind of warranty coverage a faucet (without original receipt ) has.

Most of those type of products for sale come from products that have been returned, and the box is damaged, or there are missing pieces, or there is something wrong with it. Sometimes, the resellers will get 2-3 of the same model product in and cannibalize one of them for parts for the defective product to make it work. It still doesn't come with a warranty, even though it might work at the time of purchase.

You have to be willing to gamble, and lose that gamble. You will win a lot of the time, but there will be products that you will lose also.

Are you willing to take the risk?
