Where to buy sod quality Elite KBG?

Hello, I'm from Edmonton and I'm wondering if anybody knows where to buy some elite cultivars of Kentucky Bluegrass of sod quality..local would be nice but I do not mind ordering online. I am aware of US sources so I'm looking specifically for Canadian sources.

Pickseed in Sherwood Park is an excellent source of bluegrass seed, though I don't know if they sell in small quantities. Superior varieties are 'America', 'Moon Shadow' and 'Granite' ... 'Granite' has exceptional wear tolerance. There's even somewhat better bluegrass varieties out there, though you might be hard pressed to obtain them in Canada!

Just checked in on the Pickseed website and they've added some additional varieties, I still believe that 'Granite' remains exceptional due to its wear tolerance.

Doesn't bother me either. Memorial day is when your lawn will really shine above many others, even in their prime. And early summer when others are starting to clearly fizzle away, your lawn is still going strong. So in the end, you lose some early spring "show" but make up for it in overall quality and quality looks early summer and very late summer. It is also a great intro into organics as you don't have to "jack" up your lawn to achieve a deep green--a green that fades after only a couple of weeks until the next hit of synthetic fert.

Well, what can I say, I'm hard headed! Everytime someone says it can't be or shouldn't be done, it makes me want to try harder. For about a month last summer, I thought that TTTF was a big mistake, and wished I had just bought Zoysia sod. By late August the TTTF grew green again, and I was glad I refrained from spraying roundup over the TTTF. Right now things look pretty good, but sweltering summertime heat is just a few weeks away, so we'll see what happens then. Auteck's pics from last summer look no worse than many of the Bermuda & Zoysia lawns here did last summer. The Homeowner's Assoc has had plenty of folks around here throwing out Bermuda and Zoysia sod this spring. Fortunately for me, my St Aug strip by the street passed their drive by inspection. The way I see it, cool season grass in AL = 9 months of glory, 3 months of pain. Warm season grass in AL = 5 to 7 months of green, 5 to 7 months of dormancy. Maybe I'll have the balls to take & post pictures in July & August of my lawn (I'll blame the dog for any dead spots!). Or maybe I'll just come up with a new screen name and be a Bermuda grass lover!

need advice on overseeding a kbg/rye lawn mwith elite kbg.

Are you going to be happy with the results? Overseeding into an existing stand will result in a hodgpodge lawn of different shades, textures and growth rates. A complete reno may be your best recourse. For best overseeding results: Scalp the lawn. Run a verticutter over the lawn and rake up the debree. Spread your elite KBG seed and then run the verticutter set at a 1/4" depth over the lawn twice at 45 degree angle to each run. This will cause almost as much damage to the lawn as a complete kill and reno, but will result in very good germination of the new seed. Optionally topdress with peat moss. Drop a starter, water appropriately and mow carefully to keep any surviving extablished grass from out-competing the new seed. Good luck.

Thanks but I don't hear about those varieties too much. The popular ones these days are Bewitched, Midnight, Blueberry, Prosperity etc..never see any of those varieties listed on their website being discussed by the lawn nuts..

It might be a challenge to find the uppermost elite bluegrass varieties in this neck of the woods, a totally different story in the USA where you can easily acquire them and can even have a blend personally selected by yourself. Maybe, things have changed now, though when I had been checking into obtaining some of those very same varieties you mention, I could not get my hands on them. So, we had carefully selected the varieties that suited our needs for a very dark green fine textured high wear tolerant lawn and also blended in a variety better suited to cope with any shady spots. We also chose varieties that require somewhat less mowing and avoided the ones with a rampant aggressive spreading rate that require one to maintain a very well tended lawn edge. We did find what was ideal for us and I'm sure your search will lead to the same.

Which varieties did you choose for your "very dark green fine textured high wear tolerant lawn"? And which variety did you choose for the shady spots? Which varieties that you picked required less mowing? Did you get them all from Pickseed? Are you in Edmonton? Mind sharing pics of your lawn so I can get a visual of the shade of green and the leaf width? Thanks!
