Sad plant, please help

We brought home a Purple Princess the other day. This may be a datura. Perhaps the man who raised it sang to it or something. We are failing it. It is very wilted in its leaves and not perking up. I tried watering more, going a day without, putting it in the sun, taking it to the shade. I fear I pissed it off. While all my others have done fine, this thing is mad at me!

Right now, the dirt is dry about 3/4 inch down.

Please help me before my other Bruges watch me commit planticide.

Welcome! Don't despair! :) Don't be afraid to un pot it and see what's going on. Are there healthy white roots, or are they brown, soft and mushy? Is there too much soil compared to plant roots? That can cause rot. Plants will wilt if the are rotting, cuz they can't take up oxygen, because they're drowning. Every time you move a plant, it has to adjust to it's new environment. Assess it and then get back to us. If it's rotting, cut away all rot and dead and broken roots, and repot in a smaller pot. If the roots are white and healthy, try soaking pot in a bucket of water til the bubbles stop coming up from the soil, and plant it in full sun. Let us know how you're doing and relax, have fun! ;)

Thank you. We dug it out of the pot and the roots are white and healthy. So, if it is wilted with healthy roots, do I water it more? Less? The dirt is dark but barely moist. When I have given it a good soak, nothing changes. So I underwatered it the last few days because I thought it was drowning. My other brugs do not behave like this one.

More advice needed. Thank you!

Hi Tina, Dont cut it back! The bulb will put out quite a bit of energy to produce new leaves,reducing your chances for blooms next year. Give the pot a good soak in a bucket of water but dont put the water level over the bulb. You dont want to get water in the top of the bulb,it can cause rot. Linda - The good news is that you live in the perfect climate to grow roses. You will not have to worry about "winter protection" from freezing temps! Do you know what kind of roses yours are? Are they stiff upright bushes 4 - 8 feet tall, with large blooms with pointed buds? If so, they are probably hybrid teas. It is important to know what kind of roses you have before you prune them, as different kinds respond best to different types of pruning. Re clippers, I love my Felco ones. They are "by-pass" ones, which mean they work like scissors. The other type is called "anvil", and tend to squash the roses. They make a version for smaller hands, which work great for me. They also make a version where one of the handles rotates, so that it is easier to use - this comes in the normal and the smaller size. You also might want to get a pair of long handled clippers - that way you can stay further away from the thorns, and they are good for larger canes. Obviously, you need good gloves made for roses, too. I am a bit confused about the aphids, as they usually come in the Spring, at least here. I would not worry about them. What I would do is what dollsandroses said - google the American Rose Society, and see if you can find the nearest local society, which can put you in touch with a Consulting Rosarian, who might be able to come and look at the roses for you, and tell you what general type they are, and then you can get specific pruning advice based on that. It's a Schefflera. I think it's the bigger one, S. actinophylla. For a potted indoor specimen, I think it looks great! The angle of the dangle of the older leaves looks normal to me. cindy_7 I wouldn't count on me being right about any of this! Though in my defence it would appear that basil can taste a bit minty, according to what I read. That said, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if my minty is another person's turkey! Also the tag that came with the pot said mint and spearmint, after tasting one of them I didn't question what the tag said. : / Here's some pics of the dethroned (remove from pot) mint/basil, it doesn't look too healthy and these photos were taken after I removed a good number of dead leaves. The sage and thyme look great though, aside from some minor yellowing. I've had to pot them together, as I don't have enough space otherwise. And the mint/basil I have carefully laid aside, after moistening the roots and having a good look at it. I'll be honest, I doesn't look long with this world! I'll place it in a pot on it's own this evening (UK time) and hope for the best for it. floral_uk You're like a human almanac for the UK plant-life and all it's need-to-knows! How's your kid's tomato plant hanging in? The weather this end has been cloudy and very cool in the morning then very hot and dry for the remainder of the day. That must have an impact of the taste of them, I would think? Hope they're doing well. :) Oh, and yes to the Kale. I'll be growing it to cut and come again purposes only.

Maybe it needs to be potted up to a larger pot? Was it "root-bound" when you looked at the roots?

Does it wilt in the sun, and then by the next morning it's fine? That's ok. If it stays wilted, it needs a good drink. Water it til it runs out of the drainage hole. I hope it has a drainage hole- sometimes these fancy pots don't have one and we have to drill one. Is it putting on new growth? Tell us more! :)

If I could figure out how to post a pic, I would. I put it in a smaller pot, though it still has room. I watered it a good amount each day. It looks worse than ever. The roots look fine and they look happy. The rest looks like crap. I can keep 20 alive and well, and this new treat that I was so happy to have is going to die on me!

Datura need to be kept as dry as possible. They are weeds, after all, and don't require the water brugs do.

I think you nailed it! I said originally it may be a dantura. I am going to move it to a dry pot and see if I can save it. Thank you!
