Help me kill the tree of 'heaven'

I just found out that I have one of these monsters, about 10 feet tall in a strand of natural Sycamores in the back of my property. I know if you cut them down, they send up suckers galore. Anyone sucessfully gotten rid of one?

I have been successful in preventing suckers and regrowth by painting the newly cut surface with full strenght (41%) roundup IMMEDIATELY after cutting. If done the next day it will not have any effect. Al

I do what Al does, except I use undiluted 2,4D. If I'm really pestimistic about it working, I'll drill a few holes with a drill bit down into the stump, so the herbicide fills the holes and it gets a good soaking. I've gotten 100% kill rate with this, even on notorious suckerers, like black locust. The key is to do it IMMEDIATELY while the stump is still moist.

Some trees will grow next to walnuts - see link below. I planted a few acres of walnut seedlings in one area of my reforestation project and used the list to determine which trees I could mix with the walnuts. I planted a lot of oaks, redbuds, and red cedars mixed in with the walnuts to add some variety, but several others will do fine next to them as well. Another option would be to remove the walnut tres and replant the spruces. I've read the juglone lasts 2-5 yrs in the roots/soil after the tree is killed so the new trees may get off to a slow start until the juglone totally fades away. john Here is a link that might be useful: Walnut Trees

I have far less experience than the majority of folks here growing lemons, but I do have a meyer in gritty mix, so I'll add my $0.02. I think the initial decline of the plant was due to under watering and the most recent leaf curling is also a symptom of under watering. I've found it darn near impossible to overwater my Meyer lemon when it's planted in gritty mix. It sits under a 150 watt HPS lamp during the winter and I water it every 4 days until I see water in the saucer. Since it's so heavy and I don't care to move it, I even let the water sit in the tray. The gritty mix is very forgiving for people who have a heavy hand on the watering can.

Yes, what esh just said. But....glyphosate, the active in Roundup, will also usually work in this application. The only problem I'm having is in not knowing what you mean by 'full-strength'. I've been using such materials for 40 years now, and I can tell you there's considerable differences, in terms of concentration of active ingredient, between homeo9wner's products and those available to pros. So.....what to do? Same as always-read the label! Somewhere on there will be info pertaining to exactly what you are trying to do. It will tell you what dilution to go with. For example, if I'm using something we have right now called Glyphosate Pro, we need a 40% ratio of pure concentrate to water, to do cut/treat applications. I can't tell you what yours should be, but that's where that label comes in. Time of year is of great importance on this application, also. Plants are moving materials down into their root systems in the fall. If you can also be applying your chemical at that time of year, you will have maximized your likelihood of killing the whole thing, roots and all. +oM

I would also assume that it is legal in PA, but you can always check with your cooperative extension and see what they say. You mentioned that your slope is southfacing, so I assume that it gets sun. That should make it easier than a shady site to get something to grow. I am probably not the best expert, but what about forsythia bushes? The one I have in my backyard is prolific without being uncontrollable and I think would be deeply rooted enough to help stabilize the slope. Also I would think that they would be fairly inexpensive and common at the big box stores so that you could get a bunch in without breaking the bank. My other thought was some low growing evergreen bushes. I have some on my sunny slope and they are doing quite well. For the shaded portion of my slope I am looking at planting some hydrangeas (once I get the ivy out) and maybe some ferns. Litrope would also be a good choice and is sold at the box stores. I would consider digging it up now while it is not completely established and not out of control. Like a misplaced tree, it will just get to be a bigger proble to solve later if it is left to flourish now. Plus I would expect to find it establishing other places in your yard (far from where it is planted) and becoming a problem in many spots. Last, I know that in my english ivy is where the poison ivy starts. I only have poison ivy where the English Ivy is and that is a bigger problem! Al's is the way to go... my hippy mother did it this way too, the only time she's ever used round-up.

Well thank you guys! You have given me hope. I have never used any kind of herbicide in my life, but I will be buying some this weekend!

If it's small enough to lean or bend, place a tarp under it, unless it's just over soil or mulch, and spray the foliage with either RoundUp or a 2,4-D style lawn herbicide.

Spraying a diluted mix will often put less herbicide into the environment.

The tree will "grow" the herbicide into it's roots an die in a few weeks. Then cut it off.

It's a good method to trace a weed plants roots into the rootball of another shrub too.
