Looking for Lage Buxus or Boxwood

Hi All,

I'm in Nothern California -- Santa Cruz Area -- and I'm looking for large specimen/mature boxwood. I need several boxwood that are at least 4' that can take shade. I need them for a hedge to line my front property. I'm looking for a local nusery that will deliver (or not). So far I haven't been able to locate a nursery that has any quantiy of matue boxwood. Does anyone have a reference for a local nusery in my area that may have bpxwppd?

The only nurseries I know in the Santa Cruz area are The Garden Company and San Lorenzo lumber. The nurseries may not have them in stock, but ask if they can be ordered for you.

Thanx Wanda. I was hoping to find a nursery that has a large supply of plants in stock that I could pick from and take home. neither of these nurseries do -- I called them both. Maybe I'll find a nursery in salinas or HMB . . .

I'm not sure if it's difficult or just time consuming...Boxwood grows quite slowly; most gardeners prefer the faster reward of cuttings. Buxus microphylla , sow @ 70ÂºF, if no germ. in 4 wks, move to 39ÂºF for 4 to 12 wks, recycle (multiple cycles may be required) Buxus sempervirens , sow @ 70ÂºF, if no germ. in 4 wks, move to 39ÂºF for 4 to 12 wks, recycle (multiple cycles may be required) But I've never found ripe seed on my own (and I've looked). Online source for Buxus hedges?

I would think you'd find them for a better price and get bigger plants at a local nursery. My favorite boxwood is one that grows a lot faster than some -- it's Buxus microphylla 'Winter Gem'. In my google search, I found a great photo and description at Monrovia Nursery's website. I've seen Monrovia Nursery when in So. Cal., and you could probably go there and buy them. I also know Monrovia wholesales to a lot of nurseries throughout California and you just might find it closer to home if Monrovia isn't close by. The link is below. Monrovia sells widely, offers an assortment of box. It's not on this results page for searching their web site but other pages on their site have a Retailer Locator dialog box where you can enter your zip code and find out who nearby has been buying from them. hi, i have both the buxus hyrcana and buxus microphylla in my garden , i don't know what is their minimum temperature, it's difficult to test that here, this information is based on lynn batdorf's work about buxus, where they have tested the hardiness of buxus in USA i'm in zone 7, average minimum temeratures where i live are -10Â°C to -15Â°C , but i'm good protected from cold dry winds. i think buxus hyrcana is not very cold hardy , but i don't know. do you have one of the buxus species? are you more interested in pines? i have a few pinus species too...other rare trees and shrubs, woodland plants . i can send my total plant list by email. i have pictures of all these buxus in my garden.

Try a garden center that gets product from Monrovia, and ask them to see what they can get from them. Most of the larger boxwoods I've seen come from Monrovia--15 gallons--they are not going to be cheap, though, that's why they are not common in garden centers--few people are willing to spend a lot of $$ for a common shrub. The fancy-shmansy nursery nearby sells 15 gallon ones from Monrovia, and they are pretty pricey.

Around $50-$60, I think.

Not too bad. Especially if they're 4' or more. to me that's worth it -- i get instant satisfaction :-)

You might contact landscapers in the area who do remove large box hedges as part of re-landscaping older gardens. Most times these are not reused. Al
