Growing from Seed

Do you have any experience with propagation of buxus from seeds??

Hello everybody,

on Saturday I made my advent wreath from buxus branches.

I noticed brown capsules on some branches, probably with seeds. I would like to know if anybody from you tried to sow them and got the new plants. I think it will not very easy to do it, otherwise every year I would see new seedlings around our buxus. What do you think? Should I let it until spring comes? We have now winter here with frosts and snow.

I'm not sure if it's difficult or just time consuming...Boxwood grows quite slowly; most gardeners prefer the faster reward of cuttings.

Buxus microphylla , sow @ 70ÂºF, if no germ. in 4 wks, move to 39ÂºF for 4 to 12 wks, recycle (multiple cycles may be required)

But I've never found ripe seed on my own (and I've looked).
My 16 plants in three very dwarf varieties don't lend themselves to cutting for wreaths either, wish they did...

Thank you for your advice MorZ8, I will try my best with these seeds. I hope they are ripen - found in brown capsule which was dry - I will sow them probably into the pot when the daylight will increase....

Hi Jim - No chill is necessary. Surface sown, germination of Exbury azalea seeds may begin in approx 7 - 14 days at 65-70F. Pods are about a month from being fully ripe here in this cool summer Z8, but wait until they are brown, dry and beginning to split and you risk losing the dust-like seed...better to pick slightly early or bag the pods with a square of nylon stocking and a twist tie on the plant, catch the seed that way. You may also wish to read Raising Forest Tree Seedlings at Home from the USDA Forest Service/Univ Idaho. However. the link given by resin appears to be a tad more practical (read as more like I would do it). If you're patient, many cones that require heat will open on their own if stored in a dry place for a couple months. I would also say that many conifers fall into the easy to germinate category. The real problem comes when your friends and relatives are no longer interested in giving one of your hundreds of babies a new home. I once grew hostas from seeds bought from Thompsons, collected some from my own blue ones and did not label them. I grew the seeds under light in the basement over winter, and planted them out after acclimatizing. That went well, I gave away some 3 year old plants. Some blue ones are self-seeding, some seedlings growing in a gravel path. Now I think the lower leaved ones are Elegans, the tall upright ones are Blue Umbrellas. Then there are large puckered blue-green ones, might be Elegans. I would suggest that you label all seed-grown hostas to avoid future noids. Bernd

It's quite easy. Boil water, pour water in a mug or cup, and place seeds in very hot water, and allow seeds to soak overnight. Seeds will germinated close to 100% within a week when sown in potting mix. This method works with almost any pea family member including Cercis, Baptisia, Thermopsis, Indigofera, etc.

i'm from belgium,
i have around 250 different buxus in my collection,
i think 14 species, all the rest are varieties
i have a lot of buxus sempervirens seedlings,
please contact me for more information about the buxus seeds, because i came here by google and otherwise i cannot read your answer
