trying cannas again...need some help

I'm trying again after a failed attempt, so I have a bunch of questions. I bought several varities that I want to put in pots on my deck. I would like to get a head start since we have a shorter growing season. So, it's now predicted to be between 50-60 degrees every day. Can I pot them outside and move them in at night? Is it possible to grow varieties that are 4-5' tall in pots at all? I know that they need a lot of water, but should I keep the soil very wet at all times? How about when I first plant the bulbs (or turbers). Also, any idea how long it will take until I have blooms?
