Squirrels Yet AGAIN!

Yes, They hit again. sometime very early in the morning.

I have tried everything short of shooting at them and it still isn't helping. Maybe I will give up on the pretty tropicals that must have a candy like taste to the little boogers and just plant cactus!

This time they gnawed 1 of my brugs and cut my biggest plumeria in 1/2 and took the end with the leaves to the other side of the yard to throw it down!

I could understand if they were hungry, but thanks in no small part to the aviary, there is always an abundance of cut fruits and veges and seeds in the yard. I don't know what they are getting from my plants that they aren't finding in the bird baths, ( water) and feeders and just thrown out on the lawn for them.....

I can't stand the thought of hurting them, but it was my Mrs. Chambers brug and a plumeria that had put out leaves about 3.5 inches. ( yep, this means all out war!) I was actually going to plant it in the ground today. They just beat me to it. Tomorrow I will post a pic and you can tell me if it can be salvaged.

Sorry, I think I just needed to vent.......

Sorry, thats terrible. One took my lotus out of the pond and bit it in half. Thank goodness it seems to be pulling through and getting new growth shoots. I was scared to tell Theresa because I thought it was a goner but it looks like it will pull through. I put up a little fence around the pond to help keep critters out and have been putting dog hair around it on the ground. I haven't seen him back over there lately but he still gets in my pots sometimes.

Man, yall's squirrels must be on steroids or something. Or maybe it is because I have 4 dogs (but they are in most of the time), it is a crap shoot for them just to get to the bird feeder.

There have been several colonies in Cambridgeshire (UK) for the past decade - they outnumber greys in some areas...and they are on the increase since the gene for the blacl colouration is more dominant than grey...so we will be seeing the same changes as when our native reds were out-competed by the American greys...only at a slightly slower rate...although there is evidence which shows that grey females prefer black males as mates.

haaahaha...i now don't feel so bad knowing that a family of squirrels has taken up residence in my garage. good thing my garage is not attached to the house. but they have torn a huge hole in the back of my garage, and it seems that they are not even scared of me anymore. when i go in the garage, the mother squirrel does not even move from her spot up in the rafters. i swear today that one of them was waiting for me on my back porch....wtf?? thankfully my husband has just bought a giant assault rifle type pellet gun and is excited to use it. the squirrels have done so much damage to our garage, i almost feel like we might as well tear it down and build a new one. they have ripped down ALL the insulation, and the holes are ridiculous. so...good luck to all you squirrel hunters out there...and just remember...they might be cute..BUT THEY ARE STILL RATS!!!!

With regard to letting the beet seeds sit in water until they germinate, and then planting them, root damage is one of the last things I would worry about. When I plant 2 inches apart, and they come up anywhere from 2 to 6 inches apart (because of incomplete germination), I routinely restore 4 inch spacing by transplanting the seedlings, and even shaving multiple seedlings (as beets tend to produce) apart. Movin' them around. A small teaspoon does a nice job of that. They all go on to thrive. I find that tiny beet seedlings are pretty indestructable. As I think I said, I have soaked my beet seeds overnight, and it seems to make little difference in germination time. Wet seeds are harder to manipulate, however, and I don't enjoy planting them. You can't easily drop them in place. They stick to your fingers. So especially in that soaking doesn't seem to make a big difference, I'm inclined not to soak. I'm skeptical about beet seed scarification by shaking onto sandpaper. I've done this, and they come out looking pretty much the same, with little or no chaff left behind. I think they are too lightweight to scarify efficiently by bouncing them around. Heavier seeds scarify a lot better that way. As of now, as usual, I have thirty feet of beet seedlings, perfectly spaced. It just takes a LONG TIME to make that so.

Consider yourselves fortunate that you can get something altered down. I am 5' 11" and before back surgery I was 6'. You can't add length. As far as shoes, It is just as impossible to find a 9.5 narrow (the size I wore pre kids) and now an 11 shoe, as it is to find a small shoe, but more and more manufacturers are adding larger sizes in shoes to accomodate for the change in society. Stuart Weitzman was my go to shoe too Flo. One of the few designers that made a 9.5 narrow shoe at the time. You would have loved working in the shoe department at Nordstroms. The small feet gals were given all the sample sizes and the designers would come in and talk about their shoes and give them samples too. Ferragamo especially. I was so jealous!

I planted 2 packages of sunflower seeds one year. They came up & were nice little plants almost ready to plant. The squirrels dug every one of them up, bit them in half & left the empty shells that the plants grew out of laying on top. They didn't eat any of it, just bit the stems in two. After that year & for the next few years, they destroyed the seeds I tried to start including the ones in the garden. They also dug up anything else no matter what it was if it was a seedling. DH sat in the yard at all hours with a gun & finally got rid of them. They were red squirrels. Now I have a gray who takes one bite from each unripe pear on the tree & then throws it down & moves to the next one. I haven't had a pear from that tree for 3 years. He better not mess with my brugs or the gun will come back out.

The dogs go to work with John every morning and he sits on the roof and waits til they leave, lol. I moved the lotus more to the middle so he can't reach it without getting in the pond. Every new leaf that comes out on it is red like the first one. I wonder if its from the squirrel chewing on the stem?

last week one of the girl that work with me was complains about some squirel ates her flowers. She just bought a house in the new developement, so there are an empty field in the back of her fence, she said the squirels came from there. I told her to throw some peanut over the fences, and see if the squirels would forget about her flowers. The trick works, the squirels went after the peanuts and leaves her flowers alone.

I just saw the red squirrel eating the tubers and shoots off a pot of sweet potatoe vines I had sitting in the bird bath to soak up some water. He jumped onto the plumeria tree and went down it and jumped to the next pot. I'm gonna choke him, lol. He was standing in the water of the bird bath so I guess it was him that got the lotus. He hasn't bothered it lately. I hope it didn't taste good.
