Best Rose gardens in California
Comments (8)I live in Southern California. Huntington Gardens/Library in San Marino has extensive rose gardens, both modern and antique varieties. Descanso Gardens in La Cañada has their wonderful Rosarium with all kinds of roses (I was there Sunday taking pictures :-) Rose Hills in Whittier is a cemetery with a lovely garden of modern roses. Exposition Park rose garden in Los Angeles has a big garden of modern roses next to the Natural History museum. All of the above have labels for the roses....See MoreBest Austin roses for Northern California/Orinda area
Comments (6)Thanks for the information--I'm also comparing with what they say in the Austin catalog, which is that Ambridge rose, Carding Mill, The Alnwick Rose and Winchester Cathedral all end up on their hot/dry climate rose list and Sharifa Asma is on their hot/humid list. I'm finding this hard to believe for Alnwick rose though, since these blooms seem to wilt in the heat of my St. Louis garden. I see someone in Texas has had good success with Scepter'd Isle and Ambridge rose also I wanted to get one of the smaller ones Austin sells as a container plant rather than bare root, since it will be a gift and my friend may want to keep it potted for a while. I'm tending to think given the color scheme they have in their yard that he'd like a white/cream or pale pink one, maybe: Scepter'd Isle Eglantyne Sharifa Asma Winchester Cathedral. Let me know if you have any opinions/info about any of these....See MoreBest Hybrid Tea Rose for So. California?
Comments (10)I'm in San Juan Capistrano, so our climates are the same. Heavy ocean influence. So, our best roses tend to be the ones that don't like too much heat. That said, St. Pat is a heat lover and I agree, b.u. here. Same with Moonstone and Crystaline. And actually, I do grow Gardens of the World, and it's not that great here -- I think it would like more heat than we have. Here are my recs for easily obtainable hybrid teas for this coastal area -- White -- Pope John Paul II Red -- Lasting Love Pink -- Memorial Day Yellow -- Henry Fonda and Midas Touch are both good. Apricot -- Sunset Celebration Orange -- About Face Mauve -- Neptune Multi -- Summer of Love and Cherry Parfait are both good. Newcomer worth trying (but I haven't grown it yet) -- Sedona. All of these are probably available at the Green Thumb for $16 or less, and here's a coupon for another 20% off for this week only. Or you can sign up for their email and get other coupons. Have fun. Comments (3)Yes, we are very lucky. I saw the replacement roses’ lists of some our cold zone garden friends here who have to grow roses like annuals and I have a deep respect for them. Roses are more expensive nowadays so replacing them every year isn’t an easy thing to do. For having the roses in our garden to enjoy and share with others through bouquets and photos, I think we all can pat ourselves on the shoulders for a super awesome job that we did :) Helen...See Morecaavonldy
