i dont know if my cactus has root rot

I still have my first cactus and its planted in the ground ... ive noticed recently that it is not very stable in the ground and has not seemed to have grown either ... it does however have very large flowers that are going to bloom in a few days and a little pup growing off the side. It also does not appear to have any kind of purple / black coloring anywhere ... it is a trichocereus grandiflorus hybrid and is about 1 and a half feet tall ...

If there's no signs of rot, leave it alone (and perhaps prop it steady with rocks/TC pots at its base), assuming the soil beneath it is porous and seems receptive of roots). Keep it dryish, giving it only the merest squirt of water every few days. It likely won't do any growing until it establishes itself in its new home.

I rained ALOT last night ... so it got kinda wet ... so i guess no watering for like the next two weeks ... i really dont even know what the state of the soil is , it has some perlite i know that.... i just bloomed and has 7 very large good smelling flowers, im just guessing thats a good sign its healthy :P

Hi, I would cut that "root" right up to the cut you already made....the white part looks dry and dead and is therefore useless. Let the whole thing callous over before replanting it in new soil. I believe Jeff already addressed this in another thread. Nancy

Good lord, how can a palm get root rot? I been growing palms for 10 years now and I never thought to look. I just figured that if the roots rotted the palm would die and I would start over. I am not sure about root rot, some palms dont want you to mess with the roots, others dont care. If I was you, I would make sure you have good drainage. You need to add alot of perlite and some mulch or something to break up the soil. Sounds like if its got root rot, there is way to much water sitting around where it shouldnt be. Does your pot have holes? I dont know what you would do with the root. I think I would just fix my dirt problem and stick it back in the pot. Leave it alone and see what happens.

Ok here's an additional photo of the barrel cactus in the process of repotting. It isn't the best quality photo but gives an accurate picture of what color each part of the cactus is. The brown color is not dirt; it is the actual color of the cactus. Please let me know if you think this is normal or if it is rotted. And if it is rotted, if you think it can be saved, and how. Thanks!!

Yes, you can cut. Feel the stem. Is it squishy? You will want to cut the stem back until you reach healthy tissue (start at the roots, of course). I see some brown on the stem. I would start cutting there, and work up. Keep cutting until you reach tissue with no black or brown. You want creamy white-green. After you finish cutting, dust with cinnamon to discourage disease and rot. Let the cut stem sit out of soil for a few days (in a dry, dim, cool place). the cut end will feel rough and hard (not moist or juicy). Put it in new DRY soil. I would suggest using 60% perlite and 40% cactus and succulent mix. wash the perlite to get out the dust. Don't breathe in the dust, either- it is harmful to the lungs. Prop up the stem in the soil with rocks, so it stays upright. In a few weeks, you should see roots :) Don't check often for roots, or you may break existing ones. It is best to wait until you see new growth, and then you can water a bit. The soil you have in the picture looks like it has a large contingent of peat. Peat holds water for a long time, and that rots the roots. By doing the above mix, you can avoid rot, but still be careful with watering. To check if you need to water, you can use a wooden skewer. Poke it into the soil, and if it comes out dry, you can water. Good luck! ~palmsandsnow

Oh yes, they can be delightful, ranging from that just-shucked-corn-silk smell of a Trichocereus to the Chanel-like fragrance of a Discocactus.

So recently it looks like it has been getting slimmer like as it is loosing water and it had no roots! It also had about 6 inches of cactus below the ground (i dont know why) and several slits in the side (im guess just from me being a bad kid and not caring about cacti ... i regret it now o_o) so i cut off everything bad and put on root growth hormone ... hopefully it recovers ...
