Another red camellia question

I have Kramers Supreme and it's wonderful, but it doesn't bloom until the end of the Camellia season. Can any of you recommend a good red one that would bloom around Christmas time? I particularly love the formal double blooms. I'm at the very bottom of zone 7B.

I went to Nuccio's Nursery with the same question. I went home with a Rudolph. It's a charmer! It's a Anemone form, not a formal double but it blooms at Christmas for me every year. The shape is neat and pleasing and so has a dignified look about it. Also, this variety is a compact grower for me and does not sprawl. The little Sasanqua Yuletide is still going strong for my neighbor right now.

Hi chaoticdreams, a good place to search is Helpmefind for roses. If you are a member, you can conduct an advanced search for deep red roses and specify what class or rose, what size of bush, bloom, fragrance but most importantly it looks as if you are in Florida therefore resistance to diseases like I am guessing blackspot etc. would be important, so you can add disease resistance that to your search too. Scroll through the ones that pop up and when you have found your favorites, ask the members for info regarding their experience with the roses you are considering. I live in a hot dry climate and have sought assistance from folks in a climate similar to mine. The forum members are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. You may get a Floridian or some other person dealing with conditions similar to yours who will chime in with suggestions. You can then go to help me find, search the rose, learn about all of its attributes and if it is popular you may see photos of the bloom and the bush. Because I landscape with roses, seeing the bush is always equally helpful. Btw.. I have grown Veterans Honor... the blooms are huge and the plant becomes rather tall 6' Crimson bouquet was bullet proof here and forms a nice looking plant. Europeana has deep red blooms and dark green healthy foliage Black Magic is a very deep red hybrid tea. It will grow to become 6' - 7' tall. I have not found it to ever be very floriferous. Chrysler Imperial and Oklahoma are deep reds... C.I. I believe is supposed to be fragrant but it was not for me here. Mr. Lincoln has great form and has lovely Hybrid Tea blooms but it becomes huge and will be leggy like many hybrid teas. It is not as deep of a red as compared to black magic but it is fragrant. Right now I've got a good show on Rudolph, a nice anemone form japonica and I have 3 other japonicas as well- Kramer's Supreme ( which with some sun, smells divine!) Nuccio's Bella Rossa and the biggest japonica I ever saw, Grand Prix. Grand Prix is a BIG single with lovely long yellow stamens in the center. I don't usually go for singles, but this one won me over. The red color is very pure. If you haven't seen Nuccio's Bella Rossa yet, it's magnificent as well. The petals can line up exactly with each other radiating outward from the center in a starburst pattern. Whenever I get one that does that, I'm in awe of it. Mine's a young plant so it doesn't have lots of buds but I'm hoping as time goes on, the number of buds on the plant will increase the odds of thoes perfect blooms.

You may want to consider Kurume Azaleas, which stay low and grow to about 18 to 30" in height. Examples are Hino Crimson and Hershey's Red. Or you can use low growing hydrangeas like those in the City Series (Paris is a dark pink). There are no true red or yellow hydrangeas though. You can use camellias but with the understanding that most camellias will become much taller than three feet and, given appropriate care, will become as tall as some trees. Most grow very slowly, only adding inches each year so they can be located in spots like yours for years before they reach tree height. There are many tree specimens out there that are centuries old. Shi-shi Gashira is low growing and compact; it will probably reach 4-6 feet high in 10 years. Mine-no-yuki is a white blooming low-grower that can be maintained to 4' with pruning for a while.

I got the reference pictures here about Chinese Traditional Camellia. As matter of fact that most camellia gardeners here do not link the camellias to China, only to new camellias developed in American and the ones shipped from Japan. The name of C. japonica was merely a rush to register new plant firstly discoverd by western botanists about 200 years ago. There are 200 to 250 camellia species and over 9o% are only growing in China. In last 900 years, the history recorded that Japan went to China at least four times for a special mission to collect camellias (including C. reticulatas), azaleas, peonies, Mums and Chinese orchids. There are over 400 Chinese traditional camellias, almost all are multiple petals as semi double, peony, rose form and formal double. The size are most small to medium. They discovered the new flowers from new branch-mutation and seedlings ( still today at Yunnan Botanical Gardens). They do not collect or grow single form camellias due to that so many camellia species are single. Here is a link that might be useful:

Yuletide is blooming lkike crazy here, and Professer Sargent (spelling?) is starting to crank up. Probably your best bet is Yuletide.

In doing some research on the internet, I came across a camellia called Nuccio's Bella Rossa: red, formal double, that is said to bloom for the entire Camellia season. This sounds ideal. Anyone have any experience with it?

Kay, I couldn't find anything on Rudolph. The Nuccio's website doesn't appear to be working and there was nothing else on it anywhere else. Ideas?

Life is not that perfect. There are a few nice red formal double camellias that hardly bloom timely on Christmas. You may get 'Bella Rosa', 'Black Tie' or 'Glen 40'. You can practice to use gib solution(from ACS) to treat a few flower buds in early Nov.

Gibbed flower buds tend to bloom earlier and larger. Again it is not a perfect solution. Yet it is at least one of the ways.

Happy New Year, donnabaskets!

As has been hinted at in earlier posts, your best bet is to have several different red varieties in the location where you wish to see the flowers. Local weather issues will, of course, affect all plants' bloomage but, maybe it will not affect them in the same way. Thus by having different varieties, not all reds may necessarily be blooming at Christmas but at least one or some may be.

Once you compile a list of reds, see if you can find a nursery that lists the months when the reds bloom and choose based on the starting month. For example, choose a red that starts blooming in October, another that starts in November and another that starts in December. Or try varities that start in November, December and January.

Yuletide, my normally-late-Nov-early-Dec flowering pick in Zone 7b/8a, would have been my suggestion for you too but, last year and this year, it has bloomed in the following months. Go figure! Grumble, grumble...

Now that is a great idea, luis. I wouldn't have thought of it, but it makes perfect sense.
You lost me on the gibbed flowers, longriver, but I will check out your three suggestions. Maybe they will be the way to stagger bloom times! :)
