I can't say I've been getting suspicious emails from GW. However, if I don't recognize the address when it comes in, I delete it. Simple as that. Unfortunately, I recently deleted a message from my new financial planner. Oh well, he finally got in touch with me by phone.

Here's how I THINK that it works.

If you send an e-mail to me through My Page, I get an e-mail that says [This message originated at GardenWeb] and shows your e-mail so that I can reply to you, or not, if I don't like the message LOL!

If you start a thread and check off the box beside Check here if you would like copies of follow-ups to your message emailed to you. then you get all the replies to that thread sent to the e-mail in your GW profile. If a poster has no e-mail in his/her profile, or has selected Show my email address to: NONE then you see the message you describe above.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but since you should be getting this post of mine in your e-mail as well, if my theory is correct, you should see that mysterious messsage with the e-mail you get with this posting, since I don't show my e-mail, although I do allow you to e-mail me.

Homemaker, I *think* that's how it works, but I'm still a little confused. That's my own fault: I didn't make myself very clear in the first place.

If I get a letter from "Bob", who is a GW member, and it shows up in my email as "bob@gardenweb.com", can I hit "reply" and answer his letter that way? Will my reply go to his (hidden) email, or does it come to some service that GW provides (that I can't find yet)?

I sometimes get letters from members and I've always hit "reply"...but now that I think a bit, I don't know if those replies ever got to them. Hmmmm....

Yes, you can click on reply and it will go to whatever e-mail address he has in his profile. GW has no service that you need to look for.

Once you click on reply, if you look in the body of the letter where the original e-mail is quoted, the e-mail is visible there. If you have set your preferences to NOT quote the original mail, you can right click on the address in the TO field and the properties will show it to you.

If you try to reply to the e-mail you get of this post, I think it just goes to the big circular file in the cyberspace sky1 LOL

I have no idea where emails to 'gardenweb_user@gardenweb.com' go, but when you get an email like that from someone, it is because they have chosen a particular setting in their profile that prevents their address from being visible. Any email sent from GW, from that member, will have that 'cannot reply' bit. Even emails that are a result of ticking the 'click here if you would like copies' box will be 'cannot reply' kind of messsages. You can't do anything about that. You have to ask them to send an email from their mail program (not from GW) to be able to reply to them.

You can still sort of email them back though - you just have to go about it the long way. The GW name of the person that sent it should still be visable before the gardenweb_user bit. You can either find a GW post by them and click on their "my page" link and send them an email from there, or you can do a search for the GW member on the 'Member search' page (click on 'Member Pages' in the 'community' section at the very bottom of the main GW page).

Urk! That's what I was afraid of, Bonnie. I must have sent my replies off into cyber-never-never-land.

I'll track down users from here, and see if I've managed to reach them. I don't mind my address (email or postal...it's just a PO box anyway) being visible, but I want to respect others' privacy and STILL keep in touch.

That's wierd. You must have inadvertantly done something odd when you signed up for membership. Contact the moderators, they should be able to fix it for you.

You can't. This is a very old forum format and the options are very limited. Double check all your posts before you submit them to be sure they say what you want them to say.

If you want a post removed or something else important changed, then I would suggest you send a polite note to the moderators. Click on the 'contact us' link at the bottom of the page.

When you go to Member Pages, Edit Your Personal Information, Page, and Preferences, you will see something like this at the bottom of the page - scroll down:

Make sure you have selected none. That should fix the display. If not, let me know.

OK, I changed the email option to None. logged out and back in. And am still not getting the (My Page). Got an error message "Method 'Get' not implemented" when logging in, if that helps any.

Huh! I've been getting that same error message for the past few days, jimmy. Sometimes when I try to log on, sometimes when I hop to various forums...there doesn't seem to be rhyme nor reason. Maybe GW is just having a bit of trouble with the server?

Anyone else having a hard time access-wise, or are we just lucky?
