There was a glitch with GW early this am and it didn't print any posts but 2 hours later most did pop up. It seems the one on this forum would only post the title and give an oops message for the body of the post. This is what was supposed to be under Mother Nature bites you in the ***

I've been thrilled with our unseasonably warm spring and my plants have been doing beautifully. I had a tray of brug seedlings inside, some really cool crosses that were outgrowing the community tray. I figure I'd pot them up outside over the weekend. I did so and we get a freaking frost Sunday night!!!! This is fairly late in the season for a frost. It's not unheard of but our frost date is 4/30 and temps had been consistantly above average for the past month. It looks like I might have lost all the newly transplanted seedlings. At least everything else that's outside is fine including seedlings that had sprouted outside and other seedlings that were transplanted the previous week.

Oh Karyn, what a bummer! I'm so sorry for you. But maybe some of them can be saved? I sure hope so.

Your cabin is charming! I wouldn't change a thing in the original living/dining room and loft. I would take out the kitchen and square off the space...or add french doors and make that the play room. Since the driveway is on the right side of the house...have you considered 'flipping' the kitchen/family area and master bedroom? I'd rather have the driveway off the closet/bath and the view off the kitchen/family room. Then, you could put the screened porch on the left side and have easy access to the kitchen...and great views out the back of the house. As for the kids' rooms, I think they work well as is, but if you need a bedroom closer to the master...then I'd put it in between the living/dining and master area (as you have it now) but eventually turn that into a guest room/study. Can the kids go upstairs, eventually? That loft would make a great bedroom or playroom area :)

Fillers are wacked. In the bumpout area, no matter what you do with the rest of the cabinets or their position, you must have one filler because your cabinet run is up against the walls on both sides. The filler can be small - 1.5" or even .75" if you are really brave. It's the insurance policy that the cabinets will actually fit. Refrigerator panels do not take the place of that filler. They cover the side of the refrigerator and provide support to an over-the-ref cabinet. If the ref has tall cabinets to either side, you do not need refrigerator panels or fillers. Again, there is absolutely no need to put fillers between every tall cabinet. If you use frameless cabinets, you need to ALSO allow for something called a starter molding (.75" filler) so the cabinet doors or drawers on each end don't bind against the wall. The starter molding doesn't take the place of the single required filler because of the bumpout. If your cabinets (not the countertops - the actual cabinets) stick out from the wall 3/4", you don't need the starter molding. Framed cabinets, as far as I know, never need starter moldings. For example, if the pantry and the oven cabinets are positioned next to each other, you do not need a filler between them. Or between them and the next cabinet. If the pantry is positioned next to a wall, if framed, you do not need a starter molding, if frameless, you do. But you do not need to add any more filler just because its near a wall or another tall cabinet. Refrigerators are a bit different. Refrigerators need some room beside the hinges to open. The amount of room varies a lot between different refrigerator models - from 2" minimum to 14" minimum. Some refs need one quantity to open at all - say 2" and a different number if you want to be able to clean it without moving it - say 12". If you want the ref positioned on an end towards the table space, it can't be right against a longer wall. A shorter wall, yes, but not a longer wall. It's doors won't open. That's why you see a number of kitchens with a small, tall pantry or broom closet right beside the ref and on the wall side. So, try to remember the critical measurement of about 26" and don't get a ref with a shallower body and that problem is solved. In your drawing way up top, if the wall is longer than the ref but the ref and the pantry switch places, the door opening issue is solved BUT the doors open in front of the prep sink and the prep area. On one hand, its really efficient but it might also become annoying. BUT you still don't need a filler between the ref and the next cabinet. I'm not sure why you have 6" of filler there.

Blfenton: yep, that middle drawer between oven and mw has always been there. I've already sent an email to say I want it eliminated. It is a third oven, so it won't be used daily. That drawer may be functional, but not necessary. My KD has pushed for the single pantry doors from the beginning. She says breaking it into 2 creates too many horizontal lines. Dh thinks it should be 2, so I may switch it (again). Also, you've convinced me to get rid of that squat cab above the open shelf- I'll either put a door on the whole thing or keep it all open. At this point, I may just flip a coin to decide. Jic712, I want the area under the table as open and unobstructed as possible. Even though our dining room is nearby, most of the time when everyone is here we will pull up in the kitchen to eat, play games, talk. Usually there are only three of us, but there are plenty of times when there are 5 or 6 of us in the kitchen and fam room. We were making the post metal to give a bit of a contemporary feel, though the bottom will be wrapped in wood. Rebunky, you've been a great cheerleader! I'm going to go in tomorrow with these last revisions and order cabinets.! This remodel includes cabinets for the Family room, powder room, and office, so I will be thrilled to finally be taking a step forward. Next week we are looking at colleges for dd in Philly and Boston, and I will be more relaxed on this trip if the cabs are ordered.

I'm guessing I've had it in just plain water (plus soaking in water + fertilizer once a week) for about 3 months. I'm not sure if there were true "roots"--there were these fuzzy appendages first, then these actual roots came out of each of those things. You can see one of these sticking out at a 45 degree angle on the left just below the green leaves. I'm not explaining it very well, but if you try it, I'll be interested in what your divisions do.

I can't believe how cold it's been the past couple days. It didn't get out of the 40's today. Last week we were in the 90's!!!! We've always had kind of strange weather here but it's getting way more extreme over the past decade or so. Global warming? We have to be doing something to cause this. There are natural cycles but I thought they were gradual. I've tried talking with my neighbor who's an atmospheric physicist and works for NOAA but his explanations tend to go way over my head.

Sorry to hear that Karyn. Your plants were doing so good. I think everywhere the weather is crazy. Yesterday we had strong winds and 2 ,one gallon pots fell from a table on a 6 month old seedling and broke it from the roots.
Hope yours will recuperate.

That really does suck. I was in bed warm and comfy when my husband came up and told me that we were going to have frost. So I got up and went out in my slippers and house coat to cover everything. I didn't want to get up but I am glad I did. I didn't lose anything but saw a bunch of dead newly potted annuals around town:( Not mine but still disturbing.

I set out some large brugs in the back beds over a week ago and fortunately they weren't zapped that I can tell. I moved all the other tender stuff indoors just in case (scores of plumerias, etc.). Fortunately I think we only got down to about 40 degrees.

Wow Karen - that hurts. I live in Chesapeake Beach and luckily nothing was effected at all here. Hope everything rebounds.

Dave I had some really tender plants out and they were fine. The only thing affected were those newly potted brug seedlings. I guess the transplant shock on top of the frost was just too much for them. A few aren't completely dead but I'm not too hopeful. My plumerias are ok but then again many looked like such sh*t after my bare root dormancy experiment that they couldn't look much worse. lol

It's warm today but is supposed to cool off again tomorrow. Up down, up down......

Karyn maybe only the top growth was affected and the roots will put up more growth. You couldn't have had a hard freeze, could you? We just got snow and more tonight, so everything is in, and beautiful blooming perennials are covered. My garden looks pretty silly. Hope they come back for you!

These were small seedlings with only 1 set of true leaves. There is no real root system to come back from. I'm just leaving them as is. If some pull thru great, if not, oh well. Nothing else in the garden was affected including brug buds, tropical passiflora vines, some S. African natives, seriously tender stuff so the coldest temps must have been fleeting and the frost didn't settle on everything, thank goodness.

Karyn--sorry to hear about the seedlings, but they may just survive. I hope so!! I got a late start on seeds this year--was afraid of another freeze so held off plantin, then only did about 8 a week until they all got planted.
