how are you preparing for the garden season soon approaching

12 years now it is that I have wintered in Florida

Gardening here in Florida

It is so different and I almost forget all that I used to do, waiting and waiting to get out in the garden, in Canada

I used to have so many plants all over the house and pots in the basement and the catalogues .

Such huge pots to bring in and out was part of why we decided to spend winters in Florida

But I sort of miss it all

What are you doing to prepare.

Hi Diane,
You are lucky you are in Florida today. It is miserable here! It's not snowing much but the wind is howling. Gusts up to 90KM they say and it sure seems like it. A good day to stay inside.
I have started some ivy's from some cuttings I took last fall. I have some daylily seedlings started but nothing else seeded. I have a few other plants in the basement that I brought in from outside last fall-begonias and a heuchera I always keep in a pot.
But the most exciting thing was going to the Stratford garden show on Thursday! Glad we went then. It wouldn't be a nice drive today! It was really good with better garden displays that I have seen there before. I bought a few bulbs to pot up, and some hellebores from Floral and Hardy that I put into bigger pots. I went down to where I planted the 2 I bought from them last year and H. niger has buds coming on it. The other one is Ivory Prince and it is doing well but I don't see any buds yet.
Can't wait for spring!

antsy to really get going but have been doing a few things. I have some winter sowing done and a few things started inside, but haven't really started full speed yet. I have to wait a few more weeks for most things but will start my hot peppers either today or early this week. I have planted two containers of Russian persimmon tomatoes but that was for an experiment. Tomatoes will probably get planted next weekend or shortly after.

Hi Jonas, "Don't tell anybody but I use my tiller to mash it all up(: " That's funny ! ;-) I kind of cheat too.... Most of my garden is raised bed 2' tall concrete block, so rototilling isn't even an option. but I do have a couple of 20'x 20' ground level beds that I used my excavator and dug 4' deep beds and filled them with my awesome raised bed special recipe soil ;-) Equal parts Topsoil,Decomposed Granite,Pumice,Compost,Steer Manure and then top it all with my own wonderful compost... When other gardeners come by to see my garden,they can't believe how much can grow in a 20'x 20' area, then I show them that I can literally stick my arm down all the way to my shoulder, I get the best looks, especially since most ground around here is as hard as a rock ;-) It was wonderful having an excavator to do the heavy lifting ;-)

haha! all sh*t isn't equal. :) Horse manure can be applied directly to the beds and around plants. Cow manure has to be aged/composted. It will burn or kill your plants if it isn't. And the political sh*t isn't good for nothing. I have lots of before shots and will be taking during and after shots of the progress. I'm sure this project will be like all my others. It will start off one direction and then morph into something totally different. :) We've discussed collecting rain water and have decided against it. Its the storing it that's a problem. To get enough of it to make it worth it, would take an awfully huge container,and where do we put that? Not to mention our aversion to mosquitoes. :)

Thanks for the comments. I did find a way to get them to sit still. I clamped a tree branch to my patio near one of the feeders. The dominant male that owns that feeder will sit on the end of the branch so he can keep watch over his food. I set up the camera on a tripod and focus on the end of the branch. Then I set up an off-camera flash near the branch. Finally, I go in the house and sit back with a cocktail and use a remote trigger to capture images. Capturing them in flight is just a matter of taking hundreds of images and discarding 99% of them. It's great fun. Rebecca, I love your hummer photos and the D5000 is a great camera. One of my nieces has a D3300 and she is capturing amazing images. Certainly can't go wrong with Nikon. I have ordered my second flash and another umbrella and light stand. Using multiple off-camera flashes to control lighting really provides awesome results. How can you tell if it's a juvenile bird? By his markings of course but also because he sticks his tongue out at the camera, lol...

Wow, there are some ambitious people here! After 6 weeks of not really doing anything in the yards AT ALL, I did get my dwarf pear and cherry trees and red currant potted in whiskey barrels moved into the garage and I got my strawberry barrels mulched heavily with leaves. I also leaf-mulched my in-ground strawberry beds and raspberry plants (which still have green leaves on them!!). I threw the already decomposing pepper and tomato plants that I pulled in October on top of the in-ground beds to break down and add as much matter to the soil as they can before spring. I'll remove whatever doesn't break down in early-mid March. I kick myself almost every day for not having started a fall garden back in August - we'd easily still have lettuces, radishes, etc., even with the few sub-20-degree nights we've had. I was able to pick tons of fresh rosemary for Thanksgiving, though, so that was good. I am so excited for all the seed catalogs to come in (I've gotten a few), though in all honesty, I have more seeds than I will ever need. Oh well, it's too much fun and it's such a great hobby. I filtered through my seed box over this past weekend and started brainstorming what I want to focus on in 2017. I'm going to be starting greens (lettuces, Asian greens), micro tomatoes and perhaps a few pepper plants between now and the end of December under my basement grow lights. Beyond that, I think it's going to be a big tomato year again (as always), as well as beans and unique fruit. Baker Creek has some wonderful and unusual fruits that I am dying to grow out. I'll have some peppers, squash, melons, etc., too, of course, but it's always fun to throw some new stuff in the mix, especially since I'm relatively new to gardening (2017 will be my 5th summer).

I was in Florida a couple of years ago in the height of summer. I wilted just getting out of the car and walking a short distance to the beach. Mind you I am originally from tropical Asia but I've never ever gone thru that kind of heat before. Wow. Good think you overwinter there as opposed to staying there thru summer.

There are some really good wheels for pots nowadays to make it easier for you to transport your pots in and out. I would always start off with a good garden clean up. I am one of those who prefer to do my pruning in the spring as opposed to doing it in the fall. So I do my general clean up around April. Then I put in a very thin layer of black earth (LOBLAWS brand) with a sprinklng of bone meal and composted manure. Then I start seeding my annual wildflowers. The blackearth gives a beautiful fresh look to the yard. almost like icing on the cake. and once plants start poking thru the contrast is beautiful. I get many visitors each year just inspecting what's growing in the yard.

Now is also the time to refresh your lawn by adding a thin layer of topsoil mixed in with brick sand and seeds. Reseed in 2 weeks to ensure complete coverage. If one needs to do aeration, best to do this prior to adding the topsoil layer. I get a very thick and healthy lawn as a result.
