Where can I get goldenrod in CAlifornia?

There are selected forms of our native Solidago californica that are superb garden subjects. Native plant specialists offer them.

If you cannot find these native plants, several mailorder companies offer cultivars of Solidago and I would suggest you look for a plant called "Solidaster" (Solidago x Aster hybrid). I've seen it do well in California gardens whereas Solidago species and cultivars (aside from our native) haven't done well.

i would find a spot in the garden for it.. break it out of that pot.. bare root it.. and see if the sprouts are related to the root mass below ... and if it isnt related to the roots ... then dont plant the weed sprouts... lol ... imo.. anything that gratuitously shows up in a pot.. is a free seeding potential nightmare.. and i think to myself.. maybe i dont want that in my garden ... welcome to the forums ... ken

That is Canada Goldenrod, which is native, but boy, such an aggressive one that I pull it up out of my garden and there is still plenty of it. It spreads. There are some *beautiful* goldenrods that are not as aggressive. Like Riddell's Goldenrod for sun, or Blue-stem Goldenrod for shade. Both nice, well-behaved plants.

I don‘t think one can reduce the difference to just one of those two variables. There are multiple reasons why your yard is different from the trailside. But I wouldn’t worry too much about trying to get ’good’ soil. Wildflowers don’t need rich living. The Bidens is an annual while the Goldenrod is perennial, so that would explain why the former flowered in year one and the latter not until year two.

I have a stand of Solidago rugosa "Fireworks" that has been growing for 5 years now. I purchased the original plants from High Country Gardens.
