Healthy Camellia tree has several leaves burnt(see picture)

Hello,

I'm really struggling to know what is going wrong with these sasanqua fragrant camellias in my garden.

These trees are 7 - 8 years old and have lush green healthy looking leaves.

All of a sudden the 3 Camellia trees are showing portion of the leaves that are burnt(see picture).

I water them 3 times a week for 10 minutes (using sprinklers connected to ground level). They get around 4 - 5 hours of early morning to 1 PM sun.

I fertilize all my plants with miracle grow (acidic) fertilizer at the rate of 1 TB spoon miexd with 1 Ga water per plant, once a month.(The recommended doze is every 7 - 14 days).

All other plants (even smaller ones) are doing well with the miracle grow fertilizer(all are acid loving plants). So, I'm not sure what is going wrong...

I am not sure how much water they are getting but it sounds like not enough. You said they are watered 3 times a week; 10 minutes of sprinkler watering. Any idea how this translates to gallons per watering?

If there is no "lack of water" problem with the soil as you suggest, I think you need to get an appropriate diagnosis from your Agriculture Extension Service or universities rather than via the Internet.

There is nasty fungal infection making the rounds in California the last few years called Phytophera Ramorum and I hope that is not what the trees have. You may remember about 5 years ago when the government issued a recall of all camellias shipped from California to other states in order to prevent/minimize the spread of the disease. I am not an expert on this disease but someone in CA should be able to assist since a correct diagnosis is important. The little information that I remember indicated that the disease sometimes produced leaf spots that, in some camellia varieties, were not visible unless you viewed the leaf from below. I did not see any spots on your photos but these were mostly photos of the top part of the leaves. I hope you do not have any spots on the underside of the leaves.

If you send leaf samples for analysis, I would include a few fallen leaves, some of the affected ones and healthy looking ones. If the trees are of the same variety, send the samples in a single bag. Otherwise, separate the samples by variety as camellias respond differently to this organism.

In the meantime, apply good sanitation techniques and water well. Throw any fallen diseased leaves in the trash. Do the same with any other plant debris. Replace the mulch with new mulch. Maintain good airflow around the plants. Do not overwater. Water the soil only and do it early in the mornings. Water again (1-2 gallons) when a finger inserted to a depth of 4" feels dry (or almost dry). Clean with 1 part bleach 9 parts water solution any pruners used on these three trees. It has the appearance of Phytophthora ramorum, so be SURE to follow up on what Luis suggested. This is a dreaded fungus-like disease that affects many different kinds of plants, including much loved oaks. This is the 'sudden oak death' disease, if you've heard of it.

Affected plants can't be cured, but those which are still pathogen free can be protected with certain fungicides. Be SURE to contact your local extension office with your suspicions. They will be able to help you.

If you have a good number of cedar trees within a mile of your trees, it will be difficult to deal with Cedar Apple Rust (CAR) on apple trees. Speaking only from my experience in a cesspool of cedars, the young trees will be attacked yearly, causing severe damage to the leaves each year, not good for a young tree with no reserves to draw from year after year. I watched my 2 supposedly CAR resistant trees (Freedom and Jonafree) get ravaged for their first 3 years causing very mature leaf fall each year before trying to spray for control. The praying has worked and the trees have been growing nicely since. Liberty is supposed to handle CAR pretty well as are some others whose names escape me at the moment. Keep in mind that my location experiences extreme CAR disease pressure every year, if your area only has light pressure, you may be able to get by with no controls. As to peach, it is highly likely your trees will be susceptible to Peach Leaf Curl, it can be very hard on trees especially over years as it too will defoliate the trees. One remedy under mild to low pressure is a single application of copper in the fall to all of the trunk and branches. If in subsequent years that doesn't get the job done, a fall application followed by an early Spring application just before bud break should do the trick. Our drought has mercifully been broken with rain every day for the last week or so! It went from 105 down to about 75-80, which is unheard of for July in Texas. It was 72 when I got up this morning and is 77 now, incredible! However, we got it last year. Virtually every magnolia and about 75% of the pines in this part of the state are dead. Millions of trees. If they didn't get watered they are dead. I lost a few things, but nothing large or serious. Won't have that problem this year, thank goodness.

I have to agree with all who have mentioned that sasanquas will get to a tree-size more quickly than japonicas. I think you could go with any color, given what I see of your house. One of the best-looking sasanquas I'm noticing locally is 'Kanjiro'. One neighbor has an especially attractive large shrub/small tree in the front yard that is good-looking all year, but a real show-stopper now that it's covered with flowers. 'Setsugekka' is a good-looking sasanqua also, and that photo of 'Pink Snow' is very nice indeed.... 'Masterpiece Pink' was born in the Lake Charles area & has a reputation for having attractive foliage & getting tall rather quickly- for a japonica, that is... If you like 'Pink Perfection', the pink, formal MP flowers might appeal to you. Another pink formal double that hails from Slidell is 'Tammia'- I rather like the shape & shading of the miniature flowers, but I believe that it's growth rate is 'medium', so not a speedy grower. As you mentioned, you would need to find a fairly well-established plant if you choose almost any japonica. 'Pink Perfection' AKA 'Otome' is a classic garden plant & will branch nicely, but I don't know how large it gets. There seems to be at least 2 different 'Pink Perfections' out there, so if you decide to buy for the flower, try to get a look at the bloom before you buy. It might be a good idea to test your soil before you plant anything new there. If the fatsias died, and the CM is languishing, there could be a soil deficiency? "What have we gotten ourselves into?" Home ownership. I really think you should relax and enjoy your new home. None of the issues you are currently concerned about is a serious issue. I understand that everything is not exactly how you wanted it to be, but... It does sound like you should have spent a bit more time checking things out. Wood look tile really doesn't look (or sound) like hardwood, so, I don't think it's a case of them trying to fool potential buyers or anything and travertine really doesn't look like marble. I'm sure your home is beautiful, though. There's nothing wrong with wood look tile or travertine and these materials can cost quite a bit, so I wouldn't categorize them as inherently cheap or somehow lacking. They can be lower maintenance than marble or hardwood and can actually be better choices in many situations. Be really glad you aren't finding out that there's something like an electrical or plumbing problem that was not apparent in your inspections, or something else that would be really expensive. It could be a lot worse. It really could. I think you should enjoy your new home. If there are things you don't like about how it is now, just change them over time. Stuff like that is just part of owning a home, imo. Fwiw, I've never bought a house and planned to keep the flooring or the landscaping.

Hmmm. I'd suggest sunburn. Any recent hot spells, perhaps within the past month?

I doubt the problem is Phytophthora ramorum, which goes by the name of sudden oak death (SOD) -- but isn't sudden nor is it restricted to oaks.
