DeviGardener I grow all my brugmansias in big planters I use miracle potting mix that feeds upto 6 months it's the best solid I've used for my brugs and they thrive in it. some are as big as 8 ft tall or 9. I feed them every 2 weeks with miracle grow plant food. Looking at your pictures it seems that your brugs still need to grow but they usually very fast growers. Untill your plants grow they y's they will then start to flower. And when they start to flower and you feed them every 2 weeks you will have blooms most of the year. I live in california and this year my brugs have blooms almost all year long. You might consider taking them out and removing some solid from the rootball and add miracle grow potting mix that feeds upto 6 months and they should grow faster with that new dirt. And don't worry about hurting the plant brugs are very hardy I've done that tons of times removing a lot of the soil and adding new and they will rejuvenate. It's too hot now to bloom - give it a few weeks. Slow release fertilizer is released too SLOW for them. They can take an insane amount of fertilizer and be ok. Also, they can use a REALLY big pot - make sure your pot isn't too small. The ones in the ground can get extra nutrients/water and have room to grow which is usually why they bloom better...

I think that is enough while they are still little and growing. For now you can go ahead and keep giving them the more balanced fertilizer. You could give them a little extra nitrogen while they are still putting on vegetative growth. Once they are larger and start making Y shaped branches at the top, they will be ready to start making flowers. Then you can either give them balanced fertilizer or the high middle # (phosphorus) in the NPK ratio type fertilizer. You can also double the amt of fertilizer when they are bigger if you want to. Mine are hogs and will eat everything throw at them when they are larger. Some people like to give them tomato fertilizer. They really aren't that picky. In their natural habitats they are even found growing at human refuse sites. No wonder they just seem to love milirganite (lots of nitrogen w some iron in it). Just make sure to water all plants well before fertilizing.

Brad, they are definitely not edible, and the only problem I could see is that they are in the solonaceae family, so you wouldn't want to plant them anywhere near any other solonaceaes, because they attract the same pests. I've had hornworms devour mine overnight. I've never had an animal that tried to eat one, and I taught my kids very young not to touch it or they would die. That being said, the leaves taste horrid, so I hear, and you'd have to eat quite a few to die, but they can shut down your kidneys. The biggest danger I think would be people, mostly stupid teens, trying to get high off of them, but I've never had that happen. They're very well studied, so you can find a lot about their toxicity online. Oh, and as to cross-pollinating, there is only one insect that pollinates them, and that's a night-flying moth. They only pollinate at night, and only with each other.
