citrus budwood order from ucr ccpp - anyone interested?

I just got approval to order budwood from UCR CCPP online, and I'm wondering if anyone is planning on ordering? I see that you have a minimum order of 12 budwoods per variety, with a grand total of 36 budwoods. So, that sounds like you can pick 3 varieties, getting 12 budwoods per variety. I am wondering if there is someone else planning on ordering, and maybe? we could split the order, so we can all get more varieties and maybe 2 or 3 budwoods per variety? This will be my first attempt at propagating, and will probably need some help from CRFG in N. San Diego county, and I saw all the excellent tutorials on the Citrus Growers Forum, which will be very helpful. So, any California members interested in pooling orders? I am planning on ordering Ugli tangelo and Xie Shan mandarin, and haven't decided on a 3rd variety, yet. And, I need to figure out what rootstock to order (probably? trifoliate) and from where. I will be putting up a little greenhouse (would love recommendations on a greenhouse for us in S. California, too) in the next month or two, so hopefully I'll have a nice place to put my grafted trees to take and grow.

Ali, if you go to UCR's CC PP site, you can see what budwood is being offered. I am planning on ordering Ugli Tangor, Valentine Pummelo and Xie Shan Mandarin. And haven't decided on other varieties yet. I have two other folks that want to split the Xie Shan with me. I have to place a minimum order of 12 budwood per variety, so I was hoping to split some of what I was planning on ordering so I didn't end up with 12 of one variety, since I really only want 3 or 4 budwood of each variety to graft with. I'd rather have more varieties and less #'s of budwood per variety since I'm a backyard orchardist and not a commercial grower.

I have the same tree from the same place and on the same rootstock. So far, I have not repotted mine yet as whatever mix it is in, it seems to like at this point (plus it wasn't potbound when I got it). It is doing some nice flushing of leaves. Rich is a trifoliate orange rootstock and should be okay with this. Since you are in south Florida (and have a hot/humid rainy season), just make sure that whatever you mix up, drains well but has enough potting mix so that you are not watering it multiple times a day when it's not raining and the sun is blazing (unless you don't mind doing that). I don't know if I am ordering this time around. I usually get some orders going, but I ran out of branches to graft to lately after the round of summer budwood orders. Most of my budded citruses from about 1-2 years ago are now loaded with fruits and am excited to taste them the first time. You can't get these fruits for sale anywhere in the entire USA and I will be enjoying them soon. So it will be a shame to graft over these loaded branches. Meanwhile, I have seedlings of flying dragon going, so will have to wait for 2 more years before ordering new budwood. The minimum order now amounts to only $27 for 36 buds minimum, still less than the price of one potted citrus from our local nursery ($30). The $27 should give you at least 12 buds each for the 3 varieties. So for Californians, this is truly one bargain sources of some citruses that you will not find in any of the retail stores, not even the specialty citrus stores that would brag and sell their uncommon cultivars for $150 per plant. For non-Californians, the prices would be three times as much. Texas also has similar budwood program and they share some common citrus germplasm with UCR. I don't have much details about the Texas budwood program, only that it was mentioned to me by one of my credible citrus hobbyist colleagues.

Order budwood, order lots of budwood - - support the CCPP!!! [and don't forget the rootstocks!] Thanks to this thread, I just noticed that several varieties are back on the budwood list... e.g. Xie Shan and Early St. Ann. Also they moved Shiranui from the early release to the standard list! I will be adding either the XieS or Miyagawa or Early St. Ann to my collection soon - [opinions on the relative performance of these - anyone?] P-Bob, my mandarin varieties are now between 2 and 6 years in the ground and I am beginning to form some opinions. I've forced ranked them below. Maybe the info might help you decide what to get next... : - ) ? [NOTE that this ranking applies to what I am seeing in my climate... only!] Okitsu Wase [Danville & Napa] - early and great taste by Dec. 1 Dobashi Beni [D] - this year's surprise first harvest - tasty by mid Dec.; great color. Gold Nugget [D] - if they survive the winter freezes, outstanding flavor balance by mid April Tango [D] - if they survive the winter freezes, outstanding flavor balance by mid March Caffin [D] - very nice coloration, decent taste by January 1 Owari - [D&N] - late - good flavor - now Clemenules [D&N] - seedy, just getting mature enough to harvest now [possible issue is with my 1/2 day sun locations] S. Kelley, those look good! The Shiranui you talking about is not that long of a branch, only little over 3 inches since grafting. I fed the little tree last week with the half of recommended dose of fertilizer, see in this picture You should see the Shiranui bud graft on my Friendship tree, its 13 + inches long since grafting it end of September. It blew me away :) I have not fed the tree since September 2nd, the vigor of the tree and/or the bud is amazing: Because of low light levels, the nodes are far apart, well, can't do much about it, next summer it will branch out with some training.

Patty, though I am interested in trying my hand at grafting, I am looking for "rare to find" pigmented oranges/mandarins. So, if your list ever increases to include any of the following, and if there is interest in sharing (I do not want to utilize 12 budwoods of each kind as I am a rookie and am doing this as an experiment - 3-4 buds of each typewould do for me) .
Here is the list - I believe the Smith Red and Vainiglia are available in the market, but hard to find - the rest are not available:

Red Valencia (Smith Red?)

Hi Patty! I see your postings on the citrus forum alot. I am interested in grafting for the first time too, but from what someone told me who is more experienced, I missed my chance this year cuz you should graft just before your branches bud out, and my big lemon tree looks like its too late. Is that true?

If not, then I might be interested in the pummelo, but I just don't see Valentine on their site under varieties, only others. Where is it, so I can see the description? I think my zone won't grow grapefruits well, but pummelos look okay. I really wanted to try the Cocktail Pummelo tho, but I'm open. Have you tried the mandarin you want? What made you decide on that particular one? I'd love a satsuma too.

@ hoosierquilt. I would be interested in splitting an order. I am also open to suggestions. I was looking to get a blood orange of some variety and perhaps the cara cara pink navel. Again, I am open to suggestions, as I am pretty new to this. Cara Cara Pink Navel and Page Mandarin seem to be recommended.

Are you still looking for people to share this order? I'm interested in Valentine Pummelo, Bream Tarocco, Red Valencia, and possibly others. What's the cutoff date for your order, if you haven't sent it already. Also, I believe that when UCR talks about 12 budwoods, they mean 12 buds, probably on 2 or 3 sticks, not 12 sticks. I believe I once saw a photo of someone's order and it definitely wasn't 12 sticks.
