I Live in florida zone 9 and they can be very easy to root.

I have place the cutting right in the soil and they root
with very little care. also i have use regular water bottles
around 12oz size and take a pair of scissor and make splices
around the bottom of the water bottle for drainage which works fine if it rain on them the water drains off of them.

Byrd, have yours not been getting soaked the last past weeks? I am in the process of trying to build a PVC mini greenhouse to stave off the rain from my cuttings, I've gotten too many to keep pulling in and babying. Amelia, I was never so obsessed as when my first seedling bloomed.Then all the work was totally worth it.

Bri Yes they have been getting soak everyday and i never
remove them out of the rain Not once. I Have so many cuttings rooting until if one
did not want to survive i would have not Have cried. They were
in there little water bottle and i check on them today and
every one of them were full of roots. Also i had some cuttings standing against the garage wall and behold they
caught root leaning up against the wall. Bri Try it sometime
i have place some 4 & 5 feet cuttings in the soil and they root very easy. When i first started out with my plumeria 5 years ago i was doing all the things i were told
to do to get them to root. Now looking back at what i was Doing to get them to root its scares me. Meaning Placing them in pots with pea rock on top setting them on Heating
Pad, Now i just place them in the dirt full sun and walk
off and forget about them. When i pay attention to them again they are full of leaves and have inflos on them.

I can't let the soil (lots of perlite & pumice) get too wet while I'm rooting plumeria cuttings or they'll rot but in some areas you can just stick the cutting in the ground and it will take off. During the summer I ususally use the GH for rooting but I've also keep them under a glass table outside. They got the warmth and sun but not the rain. Chocolate Brug I used to use pea gravel too, big mistake! I burned the stems of so many plumerias.

I have the same problem, in South Florida... my sunny spots get the rain. I've got 5 cuttings that are in various states of rooting, sitting in a sunny spot up against the garage door. In a light rain they are okay, but when the real storms come, they would get soaked in that spot. Well I've been away for a week, and I understand the weather has been atrocious. I'll get home later today, and I'm afraid a couple won't make it. I believe that, even when they have begun to root, the cutting itself is still sensitive to sitting in wet soil mix. I usually don't water them at all for the first couple of months, and then only lightly. Wish I had remembered to move them, before I left, but we just went a very long time without rain, so I wasn't expecting the great floods!

I want to make something like Bri is doing, to protect them from rain. I guess I should get on that! I have had mixed results with putting them directly in the ground. I wouldn't recommend that, unless you have very fast draining soil.

I'm sort of sorry I got some plumeria seeds. They did germinate. It was a mix, not a specific color. I have little seedlings that I am trying to get to grow. I went to the Houston Garden Center yesterday and everything is half off. They have one gallon plumerias that are blooming and they are about 4 feet tall.

Sign. Jump with both feet. I swear I will research before I start something else.

Plumeria seeds don't grow true to the parent anyway. They are pretty easy to grow from seed but take such a long time to reach blooming size, average 4 years : (

well I will be back in 4 years and talk about the plumeria seedlings that made it to blooming stage lol

I knew that they didn't come true from the parent. I was seduced by pictures. I admit it.

Hey guys I do the same as chocolate brug and put them in some good soil and walk away while paying no mind to them for a few weeks and then we have leaves.Best thing to do with cuttings from my own experince is to pot them up and walk away.

I have 5 seedlings that are close to a year old. Although they do not grow true to the parent, I think it is worth it. The roots grow stronger, some will branch without flowering (one of mine has 4 growth tips!) and you never know what the flowers will look like... you may get a great surprise! You just need to be patient.

Bob I wonder if you can share a picture of your seedlings? that would be awesome. Cause every time I look at the progress mine make...I wonder how SLOW or fast they will grow.

roflmao then I am surprised almost every day now when a new seedling I grew out over the winter...starts to show WHAT it is. How BIG it is growing. I got at least TWO kinds...that I SWEAR are WEEDS and I transplanted them ever so carefully and with love. So I am just letting them grow for now. Cause I am saying to myself that there is NO WAY that the birds planted THAT MANY in my seedling trays...you know what I mean? lol

I might feel differently come this fall. Do the seedlings like full sun. So far mine are in full out texas all day long sun and seem to be fine.

All of these were started on 8/22/08. The first three are Boon Yen seedlings. The first one is the tallest, at 11" from the soil line. All of them are in the same size pots, so you can get an idea of the sizes of the rest. The fourth pic is a close-up of the third, showing the branching. I have never heard of a cutting branching, or splitting, without producing an inflo first. The more growth tips, the more flowers. Hey... only a few more years!

The next two are mystery seedlings, and then, a close-up of the third. The runt went dormant over the winter, as a 2" stick. The other four just kept growing! They all spent the winter, in the same sunny spot, in my driveway. They came in, only twice, when we had freeze warnings.

I just noticed that most of the cuttings that Bill sent have inflos starting. I know I should probably cut them off and will if it looks like the leaf development is slowing down.
