Hi, guys I am a newbie :)

I am also newer to gardening to, this is my 3rd year of outdoor growing and 1st year of indoor.

I have a little setup in my basement, peppers, flowers, tomatos, cukes. I have little trays and 2 little T5 floresent lites over top of them. I am slowly reading around and getting tips and am sure I will learn by trail and error this year and many other years. I ordered some neat seeds on ebay and am hoping they will grow under my lites.

I wanted to share a couple pics of my little setup to see what others have to say about it and get some tips. But I cant figure out how to post pictures. Anyone let me know how to post pics on here please????

Hope to meet others on here and learn lots of stuff!!!! :)

Hi Bonsai Matt, I am in Pittsburgh. I keep my deciduous and conifers outside in a cold frame that I built. They do much better there and they get their proper dormancy period. During dormancy light/water is not as important although you do not want to deprive them of the same just as they are getting out of it. From The picture I cannot tell if any of them are indoor plants. Otherwise I strongly suggest keep them outside and protect them from drying winter winds. Your plant stand and lights pretty good though. That is almost how I started caring for my few indoor plants. Eventually, I had shelves with more lights and now I winter them under metal halide lamps. They are much more efficient, especially with a lot of plants. In the summer they all go outside.

Thanks again for all the comments! Since adding my second lamp (with compact florescent bulb) and keeping them on 24 hrs I already have a ton more leaves on my tomatoes and my broccoli is standing up straight instead of pointing at the window. I also pinched the second tomato plant in the two pots so now I just have one in each pot. The ones I kept had thicker stems (barely) and bigger leaves. I also turned on the ceiling fan today on low. I hope that helps. This weekend is supposed to be warm but rainy. I want to start hardening them off under a plastic tub. They will get a lot more sun once they can hang outside all day. :) Dancing-thanks for the info on lowes. I will definitely have to check them out for next year. I want something i can put on my rack that I have. I think its a pretty rack I'm sure I can rig a light on there somehow. :) Trill-I use photobucket too and like it alot. :) Can't wait to see your pics!

orchiata bark: i don't think you can truly hydrate coarse bark by just watering it to dampen sphag in it. overtime it will become bone dry and will completely shed water. unless you patiently douse it with a fine stream of water from pressure sprayer sev times over sev days - which takes quite some time. .. not sure about shower - depends how leaves cover the surface of the bark, it's possible to shower leaves and not get much into bark...and the water will just pour thru like with reg. watering. i did read posts about orchiata - saying it sheds water, hard to hydrate it. if dolomitic lime is of such great importance - it can be sprinkled in top layer of bark from time to time - though usually it's mixed into medium. so i am not sure if light surface application is OK or not. You don't mention your growing conditions. Do you have good windows? What exposure? You are in zone 5? Can your plant go outside in summer? Lots of variables to consider. These are generally easy plants to grow in the right conditions. I grew one in NY for over 10 years. It went outside in summer, spent the winter in front of a large window. No additional light over winter. We now live in Florida and it grows on our screened patio in full sun. I actually got better flowering in NY than I do in Florida. Sounds strange, but I think it liked the cool winters. Living in Florida has caused some fungal issues likely due to the high humidity. Who knows. I have it on a wood dolly so I can roll it around. Very large, about 5 feet tall and wide. Like a shrub. Depending on your growing conditions, it should be fine for a few years. It is a slow grower so you can worry about it in a few years. Jane

re the indoor lighting. Just make sure your lights are 4-5 inches above your plants. This keeps them shorter and not so leggy.

Thanks guys, My lites are about 5inches about the plants. I only have some seedlings up so far, the rest are just under the lights germinating.

I have bell peppers, jalipinos, hot peppers, tomatos, petunias, pansys, marigolds and cukes. Of course the only thing coming up are the cukes and tomatos which I think I started to early.... but its my first time, so trial and error I will know more next year. I just planted my petunias yesterday so I am a bit late on them, but it took a bit for the seeds to get to me on Ebay.

I hope I have some little guys to plant outside this year :)

Ok I have tried to post the picture again and I cannot find this browse button it said to click to upload from my computer. So i'll just describe about 150 little seeds and some seedlings, 2 T5 floresent bulbs on top of them, I feel I need more bulbs but I cant fit anymore under my little makeshift shelf. There in the basement, sitting on towels and on top of the towels are styrophone type material to keep the seedlings warmer and off the ground. I have my lites on a timer and was told they need 18hrs a day.

So I hope it goes well :)

Exciting isn't it? I just planted my tomatoes, zuchinni, herbs and more. I;m sure I overdid it once again.

If the tomato plants get too leggy (happens when you start early) just replant them into larger containers (I used styrofoam cups from the dollar store- w/ drainage holes added of course) - But replant them up to the first true leaves. The part of the stem that is buried will produce roots, making it an even stronger plant.

Also have a fan set up nearby to blow gentle circulating air on the plants when they have finally germinated. The gentle wind will keep fungus occurence to a low, and produce stronger stems.

BTW - why bother with ebay if you can get seeds via the exchange, and all for the cost of a stamp. Next time over, check them out.

Thanks ianna I am so excited, my first time, I know I have made many mistakes and planted to early on some things, to late on other things... but im learning! :)

Styrofoam cups sound like a great idea and a cheap way to go! :) How many weeks can they usually stay in the little cells (peet pot type thing)

The fan, thanks for the tip, I have a fan in the garage will bring it in and get it ready for the little guys!

haha I would have done the seed exchange but I bought these seeds of Ebay over 2 weeks ago and didnt even know about this forum then, now I know though! I cant wait to do my first seed exchange!
