not doing well

I started bringing my brugs outside in April. Then in May I dug holes and set the ten gallon pots in them. Filled in around the pots with soil and watered thoroughly. They do not seem to be growing i.e. not putting out big leaves. Have I done something wrong or just impatient?? Steve in Baltimore County.

Steve that's about the same time I brought mine out and I'm not far from you, Montgomery County. Are they putting out new foliage at all? Mine are all growing well but not all have big leaves yet. As long as you have new growth forming and it looks healthy I think they just need a little more time. If you don't have new growth then something else is going on.

Hi Karyn, yes lots of small leaves and put out some new shoots while in the basement so think I have a case of "hurry up and get big today" Will keep posted. Thanks Steve in Baltimore County.

Haven't been on here for ages! Nice to read you all again. I have both a columnar crab and a Japanese Tree Lilac. I'm thinking of moving my JTL this year because I think it's too close to my evergreens. It hasn't been performing well at all. And the crab was actually a mistake - as I'd wanted a regular one. I didn't notice it's growth pattern until it was too late. Both are spectacular though, for small areas. It's just I've got big areas to fill.

Those lights do make a difference especially during the winter months. I grow my AV's and Gesneriads under them, my orchids are happy on the window ledge. Rosie

Just in case you have pets, check toxicity. Just in case kitty or dog or bird likes to chew or peck on plants...I have few different sp and do not worry about it, but I do not have any pets either :) Some ppl seems to be concerned and often ask about toxicity of different plants.

OK, here are some grape pics. The trellis below is a Modified Munson design about 11’ long with two vines – a 5-year-old Somerset on the left and a Himrod on the right planted July 2019 from a pot.I made the trellis with folding arms, but fixed would be fine for me. Modified Munson Trellis I kept 3 bunches of Himrod grapes so I could try them. Some somerset grapes. The bags to protect the fruit are organza bags and are about 90% effecitve gainst 4 and 6 legged things. There is 12’ between the (sparse) Lilac bushes. I plan to build a trellis of about 9’ for just one vine. My others are getting very crowded depite most places recommending 6’ per vine. I also plan to make the trellis entirely out of steel this time with fixed arms. You can see how poorly this tree is doing compared to the one on the left planted the same time. My thinking right now is that the new vine will be St Theresa aka Montreal Blues.

Sounds like they just need a little more time to grow. Have you started feeding them yet? I start mine out with a balanced all purpose fertilizer, kelp extract, B1 and ST. For the mature plants I switch from a balanced fertilizer to a bloom booster and I give all the plants a dose of epsom salts once a month. Now that they've been outside for a month I'll start feeding them once a week. I feed them biweekly for the first month outside though I'm not sure why. lol Thanks for posting the location of the brug nursery in the MAF. I'll have to look for it the next time I go to the beach. Is it visible from the road?

I guess I have not been feeding mine enough. Will get with that today. Yes they are close to road but set in a grove of pine trees. Steve in Baltimore.

I planted mine out in late April, but I took them out of dormancy indoors in late Feb...some flower buds are just about ready to open and the plant has grown nicely the last 10 days or so that it has been warm. I would suspect that growth should pick up soon as we are in the same zone.
