need ID on some native woodland plants

I posted on the name that plant forum but once again am trying here too. These were collected from a boggy area in the woods. The first plant didn't have a bloom and was wilting pretty bad by the time I got it home and planted in a bog garden. The second plant was growing all over, not only in the water. It has cool little green and reddish orange flowers. The white flowered plant looks like a violet but was growing in the water and the blooms are tiny. Less then a 1/3 the size of a wild purple violet and the foliage is much smaller as well. It must be some sort of violet but what kind?

The top one is Jewelweed. You can rub it on your skin after you have been exposed to poison ivy & it's supposed to prevent you from getting it. They'll get 2-3' tall & have pretty little tube shaped orange or yellow flowers. They grow in the ditches & any wet place around here. If you touch the plant when the seeds are ripe, they shoot everywhere. We called them Touch-Me-Nots when I was growing up. I had them all over the garden this spring. They are very easy to pull.

Thanks Linda. I didn't realize that was jewelweed. If it had been in bloom I'd have recognized it. I got the ID's on the other two. Pics 2 & 3 are Medeola virginiana (Indian Cucumber) and 4 & 5 is Viola macloskeyi.

The most common Smilax species with dense, round heads and long peduncles in your area is S. lasioneura (Blue Ridge Carrionflower). Smilax herbacea is similar, but would have pubescent leaf blades underneath. It is also much less common in Illinois. Here is a link that might be useful: Smilax lasioneura description

I agree with Rootdigger as to studying plants on site where there are labels, and the links she has given are very good ones. However, in a class I recently took they recommended Lawrence Newcomb's WILDFLOWER GUIDE and the newer edition of WILDFLOWERS OF NC (Justice,Bell, Lindsey)...but the latter is not arranged in any order, so it is difficult to use, IMHO. We also used Dr. Jon Stucky's KEY TO FAMILES AND GENERA OF NATIVE AND NATURALIZED WINTER & SPRING FLOWERING HERBS, VINES, &SHRUBS OF THE RALEIGH AREA, which was fairly easy to use. Since Sqftgarden is in western NC, some of the TN books would also be good. Again, going to gardens where there are labels helped me more than the books did several years ago when I first seriously tried to learn names of these wonderful natives. After seeing them in the garden setting, then I walked around in the mountains and here in the Piedmont and tried to apply what I saw in those gardens and in the books. I am still trying to learn...I keep noticing things that I had not seen before. Oh, if you join NCNPS, you can also join one of the local groups. The Greensboro area group has its own website, and folks often post photos of things for ID.

Well these look like bluets (Houstonia)...the particular species is left for you determine since you can see the plant itself and can answer questions.

oh man, that's definitely jewelweed. you DON'T want to introduce that to your area :P it spreads like crazy cause the seeds shoot everywhere like Linda said. we cannot get rid of the stuff around here - I live in a freaking swamp, so it's to be expected :P but in all fairness I'm part of the problem cause I always have to play with the seed pods, LOL.

my grandmother taught me the name "touch-me-not" too :D I learned years later that the plant was actually called jewelweed. it's seriously the juiciest plant I've ever seen, lol.
