Y branching and sub equal leaf formation?

Hoping this is what I have. Would like to confirm my suspicians with your brugmansia wisdom though.

Also my white brugmansia flowering...last flush, we are nearing the end of Autumn (Fall)

That's definitely a subequal leaf base. I can't tell if the other pic is a "Y" or not but I usually ger the uneven leaves after a Y. The shape of your white brug is great. Have you done a lot of pruning or did it just branch near the top?

Hey Karyn, for that type of Brugmansia it appears a lot of pruning was done to get that shape. Yes on the 'Y' and you have plenty of blooms to show for both??

Yay!! COngrats Bob!! It's so exciting isnt it?!?!? LMAO@ the every hour comment..I spent my whooooole summer doing that! First thing I'd do when I woke up was go check every single brug for any signs of Y's, sub-equals, and buds, and it was the last thing I'd do b4 going to bed..not to mention the 5000 times in between, lol. I would notice the buds when they were just forming, at about 4mm and get so excited. On alot of them, you'll know it's a bud not a leaf because it will have a little white dot thingy on the tip. But alas..most of mine dropped, and I learned that I wouldnt be so damned disappointed if I would just STOP inspecting them so closely..then I'd never notice the tiny lil missing buds. IF I ever figure out how to stop obsessing & constantly inspecting, I'll let you know, lol.

Hi Mike, I bought a plumeria from Florida in March of this yr 2019. it come in, in very good condition. It had leaves on one branch and it has 3 little branches on the main branch it also had a good root system. I planted it the leaves fell off but a new bunch of leaves have come back on that same branch but it has taken them a very long time and they are small about 3 inches long and narrow. All other branches have signs of forming leaves but not developed yet. The trunk it looking very dry not shriveled but some cracks in the trunk. The branches have no new green growth. I carefully dug around it and the root system has not grown it looks same as when I planted it no new roots have grown at all. There is no root rot but it seems to be struggling. I live in Henderson, NV the weatherman has said this has been an unusually cooler June than normal. We have had some over 100 degree days. I have the plumeria on my back patio it gets a lot of sun but some shade during the day. What needs to be done now? Thank you for any information you can give me on this. setfree7

I don't know about that variety but my Alphonso arrived Dec 2014 with a few leaves like that and it is not yet to the top of my 6' fence, though I have lightly pruned just one or two branches at the top, twice--but it has spread sideways a fair bit. But then I live in a ridiculously cold climate to be growing mangoes and I'm sure I get far fewer growth flushes than in their native climate. Seems to me you've got a good start there. One thing to know: you'll get a single limb growing from a single leaf node, but when you have a circle of leaves you get a cluster of new branches starting and they grow outward from there. They start out reddish on rubbery stems (not for more than a day or so on those stems, get to it fast if you're trying to redirect any direction of growth there), then light green leaves, then dark green leaves on solid wood. Mine just started pushing out a growth flush after last week's 100F+ heat wave here in northern California. Here, let me show you a few pictures of mine. Jan. 10, 2015, with a first circular spray of branches starting to sprout like yours did, (with Christmas lights for warmth with nothing but that one straight-up whip to wrap them around) and just now. Birdnetting at the bottom is to try to discourage the cottontails that show up. Seems to work. The squirrels still think the latex in the sap smells bad and they haven't gone near the tree once. My pomegranates, apples, peaches, cherries, plums, figs, they're all over those, but not the mango.

Thank you Matt. To add some additional background ... I’ve been caring for fiddle leaf figs for about four years. First in NJ, where it was much more humid, and for the past almost-two years in Colorado. I’m always learning but I’m not a complete novice with judging when my plants need water. I can tell when the largest leaves begin to droop, by the weight of the pot, how the soil feels when I insert my finger, etc. I also realize the climate, type of soil, type of pot, etc. can all contribute to its watering needs. I didn’t suspect I was over watering when I originally posted, but Al’s suspicion led me to look for additional ways to test his theory. While the electronic toys you referred to aren’t 100% accurate, for a very small investment they provide another piece of data that can help diagnose and solve the problem. As does the wooden skewer method you recommended, which is another good indicator, but again, not perfect. (Two people may determine what feels moist vs. dry differently, they may not insert it deeply enough, etc.) I suspect from clicking around that you’re letting your frustrations from other threads carry over into this one. But please note this was my first-ever post on Houzz, and your condescending tone makes it difficult to take your advice in the spirit I’m sure it was intended.

KHT I asked about pruning because I have a couple of brugs that grow just like that and are never pruned. My Tropical Sunset gets to about 6' then fills out at the top. I cut it back every year and it's never branched at a shorter height. It has sent out a sucker a few inches away from the trunk a few times. I wonder if the cuttings that I've taken from that plant have the same growth habit?

Hi Karyn,
No this brug grows this way. I have only ever pulled off the side shoots. The tree suckers all the time, quite annoying actually and the suckers that I have rooted and given away all grow the same way. No y branching till about 7ft tall. The tree was always in a pot till I transferred it here about 8 weeks ago. It got completely shredded in the move....DH moved it in an open trailer...God love him....lucky it survived at all.
I must say though that it has branched more on the top and grown significantly more in the ground than it ever did in the pot.
Great plants for impatient gardners like myself.

Mine grow more in the ground as well but it can be a pain having to lift them in the fall. I'd keep them all in the yard if I was just a zone warmer. Maybe in another 10 years I will be! lol The weather's been changing so much. It's much warmer now then it was 20 years ago. Surprisingly I do have a couple brugs that grow straight with no side shoots. The Tropical Sunrise and my Versicolor Peach both get to about 6' before y-ing and don't put out any side growth but they do send out suckers.

There's so many native Australian plants that I just love. I'm trying to grow a few this year. One that I haven't been able to get the seeds to germinate is Swainsonia formosa (SturtÂs Desert Pea) and another that seems to be growing well is Hardenbergia violacea (False Sarsparilla). There were so many varieties that I wanted to try but so many don't do well in high humidity which I definitely have in the summer.

Those are gorgeous brugs! I may try putting some of mine in the ground to see if they grow better or faster, but Karyn, even in my coastal zone 8, the brug I left out didn't make it. It was a very mild winter too.....

Linda I'm surprised that your brug didn't come back in your zone. Was it planted in a well draining area? Wet and cold is a death sentence but dry and cold in 8 is usually alright. I've spoken with people in 7b that can winter their brugs over inground but I think they might have some sort of micro climate.
